Upon further review, defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Sewickley Academy won’t share a boys basketball section with perennial power Lincoln Park after all.
When WPIAL realignment was announced Tuesday, the Panthers, who voluntarily decided to move up to Class 4A after winning double gold in Class 2A last year, were placed in Section 2-4A with Lincoln Park, Hopewell and four other teams.
However, East Allegheny was mistakenly listed in Section 4-4A, even though the Wildcats had dropped in enrollment and moved down to Class 3A.
That meant Section 4 had five teams and Section 2 had seven. With 24 teams in Class 4A, it only makes sense for each of the four sections to have six teams. So Sewickley Academy was shifted to a geographically funky Section 4 with Avonworth, Deer Lakes, Hampton, North Catholic and West Mifflin.
The Lancers, who were already not exactly thrilled with leaving Section 1 and being separated from traditional rivals Burrell, Freeport, Highlands, Knoch and Valley, now must contend with the Panthers as well.
