Saint Vincent sophomore Lucy Brayton was chosen as the PAC women’s golfer of the week at the end of last month.

At the Grove City Invitational, Brayton, a 2022 Penn Hills graduate, finished second out of 70 competitors. She shot a 4-over par 76 at Grove City Country Club.

Three days earlier, Brayton won the Saint Vincent Fall Invitational, shooting a 91 at Latrobe Country Club to win by a stroke.

Runners gain experience

Penn Hills’ boys cross country team competed at the WPIAL Section-IV championship at Northmoreland Park in Apollo on Oct. 2. While the Indians didn’t have enough runners to register a team score, several runners gained experience for next season.

Avin Kelly was the top finisher for the Indians, finishing in 32nd place with a time of 20:51.02 seconds. Xavier Nicholas (21:31.4) and Dylan Bishop (27:43.6) also competed for Penn Hills. Fox Chapel won the team title on the boys side, having runners finish one through five. Foxes senior Ethan Vaughan won the race with a time of 16:27.

Booker on the board

Defender Kali Booker has seen time as a freshman on the women’s soccer team at Chowan (N.C.) University. In Booker’s seventh appearance, she got on the scoresheet during the Hawks’ 8-1 win over Virginia Union. Chowan is 2-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in Conference Carolinas this season.

Pugliese finds the field

Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Luke Pugliese has appeared in all four of Slippery Rock’s football games. The Rock, which made Division II quarterfinals last season, is off to a 4-0 start and is ranked ninth in the country.

DeRiggi honored

Penn Hills graduate John DeRiggi was chosen as an inductee to the 2024 Penn State New Kensington Athletics Hall of Fame. Deriggi played volleyball and was on the Indians’ fitness team. While at Penn State New Kensington, he coached the women’s volleyball team and achieved a high level of success.

During DeRiggi’s tenure, the team won the CCAC Western Division three times. Penn State New Kensington went undefeated in the CCAC and WPCC in 2000 with DeRiggi as coach.
