Burrell Completes Stairway to Seven

The Burrell Buccaneers had a one goal in mind when beginning the 2012-2013 wrestling season, continuing their dominance in AA on their quest for stairway to seven. On Saturday they were successful, with a 35-30 victory over the South Fayette Lions, Burrell continued its winning streak of seven straight WPIAL Championships while winning its ninth overall WPIAL Gold.

The match started at 126 pounds where it seemed South Fayette was going to be off to a hot start. Lions freshman Michael Carr had a 10-3 lead after the first period over Burrell freshman Damon Greenwald and was up 12-4 halfway through the second period. But that's when the tide would turn. Greenwald would hit a five point move from the bottom position plus put Carr on his back again to tie the match at 12 heading into the 3rd period. Then on the strength of two takedowns, Greenwald would pull through with a big 16-15 win.

From there Burrell would win four of the next five bouts to take a commanding 20-6 lead. The Buccaneers picked up technical falls by Steven Edwards and Corey Falleroni as well as a major decision from John Andrejcik. South Fayette, after getting its first win via fall from Grant Fetchet, would get back on the board with another fall from his brother, Michael Fetchet at 170. After a narrow 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker win for Brad Haney at 182 for South Fayette, it seemed the Lions were back in business only trailing by five, 20-15.

But Burrell would distance themselves thanks to a forfeit given to senior Dakota Deslauriers at 195 and a fall at 285 for sophomore Allan Beattie. The score was 32-18 Burrell out in front with three matches to go. The Buccaneers needed one more win to secure its title, while South Fayette needed a sweep with bonus points to claim its first ever WPIAL Championship.

However at 106 pounds, Burrell sophomore Jason Roberts wanted to be a difference maker, and he was just that. After a scoreless first period against South Fayette freshman Jasper Wolfe, Roberts gave up a quick escape to trail 1-0. But a big takedown for Roberts would put him up 2-1. After a locked hands penalty, the match was tied at two heading into the 3rd period. Roberts showed resiliency in the final period, escaping from the bottom and holding off Wolfe for the final seconds to win the match 3-2 to clinch Burrell's stairway to seven. South Fayette would receive two forfeits to end the match but it would not make a difference, as Burrell won its 7th straight and 9th overall WPIAL Championship with a 35-30 win.
