It’s amazing to think that we’re nearly at the halfway point of the 2014 WPIAL regular season. Where does the time go? Well, that question is coincidentally what several coaches were thinking in Week Four as, with little time left, the sideline bosses would roll the dice and go for a two-point conversion to win the ballgame. Three of the four Plays of the Week involve late scores and the two point gambles that propelled their squads to big wins in pivotal games. Let’s get it rolling with the Plays of the Week for Week Four:
1. Mount Pleasant 28, Waynesburg Central 27
It was another heart-breaking loss for Waynesburg Central, as Mount Pleasant avoided the upset and remained undefeated with a late gamble, 28-27. After pulling within one point on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Pieszak to L.J. Sutton with 38 seconds left, Vikings coach Bo Ruffner would gamble and go for two points instead of settling for overtime. It turned out to be a good call, as Pieszak would find Brian Pinkey in the endzone, lifting Mount Pleasant to a 4-0 record.
Green County Sports Network’s Jason Tennant, Lanfer Simpson and Shon Meade on the call.
2. Gateway 8, Knoch 7
Gateway was just 23 seconds away from an improbable 0-4 start, but that’s when new coach Tom Nola rolled the dice. The result was a miraculous catch to pull within one point and then a two-point conversion to lift the Gators to their first win in 2014. Gateway’s Roy Quez McNair would lob a pass in the air and, after being deflected, would be caught and taken into the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown. The Gators weren’t done though. Nola would elect to go for the two-point conversion, which would be run in by Malik Burks.
WISR-AM 680’s Ron Willison and Dave Bacon on the call.
3. Western Beaver 30, Vincentian 28
It was a Saturay to remember for the Golden Beavers. Quarterback Hunter Roknich dove into the endzone from a yard out late in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 28-28. Running Back John Sosack would then follow suit, diving into the endzone for the go-ahead two-point conversion and lifting Western Beaver to their first win of the season over a tough Vincentian team.
MSA Sports’ Don Rebel and Mark Schass on the call.
4. Seton-LaSalle 14, Steel Valley 7
It was supposed to be a matchup of a top rushing attack against a top passing attack. It turned out to be a sloppy, low-scoring defensive battle, chalked full of penalties and turnovers. In the end though, it was a late turnover that lifted Seton-LaSalle to a 14-7 win over Steel Valley in a matchup that could decide second place in AA’s Century Conference. The Ironmen, who would get the ball back late in the game, would cough the football up for the fourth time in the game with just 30 seconds left, killing a potential game-tying drive.
MSA Sports’ Sam Hall and Cory Campano on the call.
