While Week One set the tone for an exciting football campaign, this past week was filled with key matchups and fantastic finishes. To that point, the top four plays include a touchdown run and ensuing extra point in the final seconds for an upset in 5A, an interception return to seal the outcome in a back-and-forth affair, a winning field goal as time expires, and a QB keeper for the winning touchdown in a notable 6A showdown. Here are the very best plays from Week Two of the WPIAL football season.
1. Fox Chapel 22, Woodland Hills 21
The Foxes were expected to be much-improved this season, but a matchup against perennial contender Woodland Hills was still a daunting task. Trailing in the final minute, Fox Chapel turned to QB Nick Gizzo, who kept the ball on an option play to pay dirt. The subsequent extra point by Andrew Jeffrey was good, giving the Foxes the narrow victory.
The Woodland Hills Sport Network’s Adam Gusky and Bob Orkwis provide the audio on the decisive sequence:
2. East Allegheny 33, Brentwood 19
While Steel Valley rightfully still holds the top spot in 2A, East Allegheny and Brentwood are two teams that could challenge in the class. After relinquishing an earlier lead, East Allegheny pulled ahead on a Tyvon Wright touchdown run with less than two minutes left. Wright put an exclamation point on the win, though, as he came up big defensively with an interception.
MSA Sports’ Paul Paterra and Lou Rood detail the pick-six that staked the Wildcats to a late two-score advantage:
3. Hampton 10, Baldwin 9
The Talbots and Highlanders battled in a low-scoring affair that came down to the wire. Trailing by two, Hampton drove deep into Baldwin territory, setting up for the winning field-goal attempt. Junior Harper Cook managed to sneak the ball inside the uprights, giving the Talbots the walk-off win.
Hampton Talbots Sport Network’s Dennis Fischer has the call of the kick that put the Talbots in the win column:
4. Central Catholic 14, North Allegheny 7
It’s always a marque matchup when the Vikings and Tigers meet, and this game lived up to the hype. Deadlocked midway through the fourth quarter, Central Catholic engineered a lengthy drive that resulted in the decisive score. QB Troy Fisher capped it off with a 1-yard run, as the Vikings notched a massive section victory.
North Allegheny Sports Network’s Randy Gore and Rick Meister detail the winning play:
