Olivia Deleonibus never let the Shaler girls soccer team's confidence lapse last Wednesday night against North Hills.
After tracking down a Molly Malachow free kick, Deleonibus volleyed the ball into the net for a goal in the first 10 minutes. Claire Schreiber tallied a second for the Titans, leading them to their first section win in 735 days.
Picking up a 2-0 win over the rival Indians was a spark for Shaler, which took on Pine-Richland in Section 1 action Tuesday night. Results for the game against the Rams were too late for this edition.
“It was a good confidence boost,” Deleonibus said. “The past couple seasons we haven't been able to win a section game. It was bumming everyone out, pretty much.
“Especially being able to beat North Hills, we were happy about it because that was a goal of ours.”
Beating North Hills snapped an 18-game winless streak — with one tie included — against section foes since a 3-2 win over Hampton on Sept. 16, 2015.
A few more wins could put Shaler (3-5, 1-3) in position for playoff contention. Titans coach Chris Catanese didn't return several messages seeking comment.
What the Titans did well against North Hills was play in harmony. Everyone was moving in concert.
“I think we were able to work together,” Deleonibus said. “We got the first shot and first goal. That boosted our confidence and energy throughout the game.”
Shaler hopes that will be carried forward.
The Titans had lost their first three section games by 14 goals. Their tightest game was a 3-0 loss to Seneca Valley on Sept. 18.
“I think we're hoping to build from that and win a couple more section games,” Deleonibus said. “At least keep games close and not get crushed by other teams.”
Boys golf
Tanner Grzegorcyzk had a big week for Shaler. Last Monday, he shot 33 vs. Montour at Lakevue Golf Course, which is believed to be a school record.
He followed that with a strong round at the sectional tournament, advancing to the WPIAL semifinals this Tuesday.
Football
There was no revenge for Shaler football Saturday.
Playing former coach Jon LeDonne and Penn Hills, the Titans' offense never got going during a 34-7 loss.
Shaler (0-5, 0-3) has had a tough go trying to score, averaging 7.6 points. LeDonne is 4-1 with the Indians, doubling his win total in three seasons with the Titans. He was 2-27 as Shaler coach.
