A-K Valley athletes of the week: Fox Chapel’s Sarena Seeger, Burrell’s Tyler Stewart

Sarena Seeger

School: Fox Chapel

Class: Junior

Sport: Cross country

Report card: Seeger carried the torch for Fox Chapel by finishing 11th with a time of 19 minutes, 9 seconds to help lead the Foxes to a first-place finish at Saturday's PIAA Class AAA girls cross country team championships at Hershey Park. The win came a week after Fox Chapel placed second behind rival Oakland Catholic at the WPIAL championships at Cooper's Lake. Seeger finished with a 19:24 at Cooper's Lake.

Why did you get involved with cross country?

I got bored at swimming, and I wasn't improving with that.

What is your favorite thing about running cross county?

I really love my team. I've met so many new friends. I like running outdoors.

How did it feel to finish first as a team at PIAAs after coming in second at the WPIAL championships?

It definitely totally made us forget about getting second there. It made us happy and a lot of us were crying.

Did this team surprise itself with its success?

Coming into this year, we knew we were going to be good and then we started winning and winning more. We were definitely happy to have the success that we did this season.

What kind of shoes do you run in?

For practice, I always wear Nikes and for racing I get whatever spikes fit me. I have Asics right now.

What's the most difficult course that you've run?

I think the course that I don't like the most is where we had section championship at (Northmoreland Park).

What's your favorite course to run?

I think the Hershey course is probably my favorite.

Can you smell the chocolate in the air while you're running?

You can smell it at times. When you smell it while you're running, it's kind of gross because you don't want think about that while you're running.

What three people would you like to have dinner with?

Emma Watson, Selena Gomez and Adele.

What do you reach for first at the Thanksgiving dinner table?

Mashed potatoes. The way my dad makes them, it just tastes really good.

What three words best describe you?

Funny. Honest. Outgoing.

What is something interesting about you that nobody knows?

I lived in India for over a year when I was a kid. I remember a little bit, just random stuff.

Tyler Stewart

School: Burrell

Class: Sophomore

Sport: Hockey

Report card: Stewart is the hottest goal scorer in Division II varsity this season. A two-year starter at center for Burrell (4-2), he leads DII in goals (21) and points (30). He's coming off a four-goal performance in Burrell's 8-7 loss to Ringgold on Monday. Stewart found the net five times in the Bucs' 7-3 win over Trinity. He is also a member of the Pittsburgh Vipers under-16 team.

How long have you been playing hockey?

I've been playing since I was 6. I started skating when I was 2. It's been a while.

What is your favorite part about playing hockey?

Probably just meeting new people each year, getting on a new team and trying to win a championship with that team.

Who has been the most difficult goaltender you've gone up against so far?

He's the goalie for Trinity, Carsen Burkhart. He knows what I'm going to do. His glove's really good.

Why do you wear the No. 16?

Whenever I first started paying hockey, my dad was No. 16 and I took after him.

Who is your favorite NHL player and team?

The Penguins and my favorite player is Pavel Datsyuk, even though he's not in the NHL anymore.

What is your favorite hockey movie?

“Miracle.”

What three words best describe you?

Persistent. Driven. Motivated.

What actor should play you in a Hollywood movie?

Johnny Depp.

What three people would you like to have dinner with?

Sidney Crosby, Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky. I wouldn't know what to say (to them).

What do you reach for first at the Thanksgiving dinner table?

My grandmother's stuffing. She makes two trays of it; it's so good. Everybody loves it.

What is something interesting about you that nobody knows?

My coach for my Vipers team, he does clinics for little kids so I like to go help him with the kids.
