Class 3A

No. 5 Valley (11-6) vs. No. 4 Brownsville (12-2)

2 p.m. Monday at Washington and Jefferson

Winner plays: No. 1 Riverside (15-1) or No. 8 Steel Valley (11-7)

Extra bases: Valley's 7-5 victory over Beaver Falls was the Vikings' first postseason win since 1974. Now they get a chance for redemption against Brownsville, which beat them 8-0 in the first round last season. Section 1-3A co-champion Valley trailed 2-0 in the first inning against Beaver Falls before a six-run fourth inning propelled the Vikings to the lead and the victory. Freshman Cayden Quinn overcame early problems on the mound to yield three earned runs on six hits in six innings. … Brownsville won the Section 3-3A title with a 10-2 record, its lone two losses coming by one run to Mt. Pleasant and two to Seton LaSalle. The Falcons have won seven games in a row. Senior Dylan Brosky, who blanked Valley in last season's game, has an 0.83 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 42 13 innings. He also leads the Falcons with 18 RBIs. Brownsville advanced to the WPIAL semifinals last season.

No. 6 Burrell (10-3) vs. No. 3 South Side Beaver (12-4)

4 p.m. Monday at Peterswood Park

Winner plays: No. 2 Avonworth (14-4) or No. 10 Shady Side Academy (7-9)

Extra bases: Section 1-3A co-champion Burrell beat Mt. Pleasant, 12-5, in the first round, helping the Bucs reach the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. Seniors Corey Christie and Nick Hwostow homered in the victory as the Bucs scored five runs in the third, four in the fifth and three in the sixth. Burrell has won a playoff game in consecutive seasons after experiencing a seven-year period without a postseason victory. The Bucs are looking for their first semifinal trip since 2010. They lost in the quarterfinals to Riverside last season. … South Side Beaver, the third-place team from the rugged Section 2-3A, is coming off a first-round bye. The Rams advanced to the quarterfinals last season before losing to Brownsville. South Side Beaver has won eight of its past nine games entering the postseason, with a win over Class A top-seeded Vincentian included in that span.
