The Plum boys lacrosse team routed Winchester Thurston earlier this month and did it with 17 goals, the most in the nearly decadelong history of the program.
Juniors C.M. Sillman and Noah Parente each scored four goals, while junior Dom Colamarino and senior Caden Anderson added two goals apiece in the 17-3 Section 2-2A victory.
Plum was 3-5 overall and 2-3 in Section 2-2A after a 10-6 section win over North Catholic and a tough 16-4 loss to Knoch.
The Mustangs hoped to continue their drive to a season-record total of wins last Thursday as they visited Gateway in a section matchup.
Plum opened the season with a 13-5 nonsection victory over Allderdice, and it averaged eight goals through its first eight games.
Anderson (14), junior Brody Howell (12), Sillman (11) and Parente (10) fronted the goal-scoring attack in those games.
The Mustangs’ stretch run in section play was to start Monday at Indiana and Wednesday at Hampton.
Friday’s section game at Shaler is to begin at 6 p.m., and Plum returns home Monday against Mars at 7:30 p.m.
Riverview boys track qualifies for WPIALs
The Riverview boys and girls track and field teams completed Section 3-2A action April 16 at home against Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy.
The Raiders boys earned a split, falling to the Quakers while beating the Panthers to finish second in the section at 6-1. QV captured the section title at 7-0.
Riverview’s setback to QV was its only loss overall, as it ended up 9-1.
Both the Quakers and the Raiders clinched spots in the WPIAL Class 2A team semifinals which were slated to be contested April 30. Riverview found itself paired up with Knoch, West Mifflin, Ellwood City and Waynesburg at West Mifflin High School.
The Riverview girls also lost to QV and beat Sewickley Academy to finished fourth in the section at 4-3 behind champion QV (7-0), runner-up Shady Side Academy (6-1) and Carlynton (5-2).
The Raiders girls finished 7-3 overall.
Riverview also ran, jumped and threw at the talent-filled Butler Invitational on April 19, and the girls 1,600-meter relay team medaled in seventh with a time of 4 minutes, 13.08 seconds.
Class 3A North Allegheny finished first, followed by District 9’s St. Marys, Butler, Norwin, South Fayette, North Hills and the Raiders.
Plum volleyball goes 5 sets
Section 3 has four teams — Norwin, Penn-Trafford, Central Catholic and Hempfield — situated in the most recent Western Pa. Volleyball Coaches Association top-10 rankings for WPIAL Class 3A.
The Mustangs have challenged all four and went to the limit against Central Catholic on April 11, while taking a game from both Norwin on April 4 and Hempfield on April 9.
Plum generated some positive vibes with a 3-0 section win over Penn Hills on April 16 and a 3-0 nonsection win over Deer Lakes on April 18 to stand at 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the section.
The Mustangs were to visit Penn-Trafford on April 25 and host Norwin on April 30.
Plum and Hempfield, 2-3 in the section after the games of April 23, will do battle at 7 p.m. Thursday with potential playoff implications.
Riverview baseball in playoff hunt
A recent 4-1 streak, including a sweep of Ligonier Valley and a dominant win over Apollo-Ridge in Section 3-2A play, has the Raiders baseball team in the mix for a WPIAL playoff spot.
Riverview was 6-2 in the section, third behind Serra Catholic (8-0) and Greensburg Central Catholic (5-1), heading into a section doubleheader with Jeannette on April 29 and 30.
The Raiders will cap the section slate against GCC Monday and Tuesday.
Last Wednesday’s 12-1 win over Apollo-Ridge was rescheduled from a rainout on April 3.
Riverview collected 16 hits with catcher Miles Duncan going 4 for 5 with four runs batted in.
Jack Loughren, Rece Stempfer, Eli DeVita and Tyler Aftanas added multi-hit games for the Raiders. DeVita stole four bases among the 10 swiped by the team.
Loughren started for Riverview and allowed one hit and no runs over four innings. He struck out four and walked one. Lukas Duncan pitched in relief for the Raiders.
