Baldwin will host the Section 6-AAA boys golf qualifier Sept. 14 at South Hills Country Club.

Golfers who tie or beat the target score of 82 will qualify for the WPIAL Class AAA individual semifinals, which will take place Sept. 26 at Donegal Highlands Golf Course and Links at Spring Church in Apollo.

Norwin, Elizabeth Forward, Seneca Valley, Plum, New Castle, Chartiers Valley and Armstrong also were assigned to be sectional qualifier hosts this year.

Section teams that will be represented at South Hills Country Club consist of Allderdice, Baldwin, Bethel Park, McKeesport, Mt. Lebanon, Thomas Jefferson and West Mifflin.

The Highlanders are led this year by senior Gary Lowman, the only starter and letterman back from last season.

Other top golfers on the squad include seniors Scott Borman and Noah Knerr, sophomore Matt Fediaczko, and freshmen Chace Hale and Connor Woods.

Tommy Ahlin, a junior, and Matt Dziadyk, a senior, round out the team, which posted a 4-2 record in the first half of section play with wins against Bethel Park, West Mifflin, Allderdice and McKeesport.

“This year, just like every year, we are trying to take one of the two playoff spots that are available to our section,” coach Steve Sinning said.

With two freshmen and one sophomore in the mix this season, the Highlanders are a young squad that has playoff hopes not only for 2017 but in future seasons, as well.

“Chace Hale has been the biggest surprise for us in the first half of the season,” Sinning said. “It is not easy for a freshman to step up and post the lowest score during the first couple of matches. His work during the offseason, and (his) participation in the Tri-State Isaly's Junior Golf Tour, effectively prepared him for varsity golf.

“Also, Matt Fediaczko's dedication in the golf room, and his work with instructor Dan Reilly, has led to a drastic improvement from the previous season.”

The WPIAL Class AAA boys golf championship will be held Oct. 3 at Nemacolin Country Club.
