Butler edges Trinity to claim 5th WPIAL team rifle championship

The Butler rifle team successfully defended its title Tuesday by winning its fifth WPIAL championship at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club.

The Golden Tornado edged runner-up Trinity by seven center shots, 798-64x to 798-57x. Six-time champion Hempfield finished third with a score of 796-56x.

Nathaniel Aaron had a perfect score of 100-10x for Butler. Also shooting for Butler were Luke Frazier (100-9x), Hayleigh Gorog (100-9x), Madison Krainbucher (100-8x), Tabitha Burke (100-8x), Grace Seybert (100-7x), Alyssa Miller (99-6x), Shayna Fleeger (99-7x), Lucas McConnell (98-7x) and Lauren McKean (96-6x).

Butler went undefeated at 14-0 in the regular season, including a 10-0 mark in Section 4.

Armstrong (796-50x), Mt. Lebanon (794-49x), West Greene (791-45x), Washington (789-43x), McGuffey (786-53x) and Bethel Park (783-34x) rounded out the field at the WPIAL championships.

Butler’s other titles came in 1988, ‘93, 2020 and last winter.

The two-time defending WPIAL individual champion, McGuffey’s Riley Dunn, also turned in a perfect score of 100-10x on Tuesday.

The WPIAL individual rifle championships will be held Thursday, also at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club.
