Now that Shai McKenzie’s football career is over, it’s time to reflect on how good of a running back he was at Washington High School. Going strictly by statistics, it’s not an overstatement to say McKenzie was one of the best of all time in the WPIAL.McKenzie’s senior season is finished because of a torn ACL sustained in last Friday’s game against Charleroi. He was scheduled to have surgery Friday.McKenzie finished his career with 4,856 yards on 493 carries and 77 touchdowns. The yardage is the 15th best in WPIAL history. Had he stayed healthy, there is a good chance McKenzie would have become only the fifth running back in WPIAL history to reach 6,000 career yards.WPIAL/City League Football Scores for Friday, September 20th
One-third of the season is in the book as we began the middle third of the high school football regular season on Friday night. This weeks saw several up and coming programs test their mettle against some of the mighty established squads in District 7. Welcome to Week 4. Chick’s Picks has a dear friend at the MSA Sports Network who loves nothing more than to spend his free time attending bizarre fitness classes. For months, Mike Azadian has been strongly encouraging Chick’s Picks to attend a hot yoga session with him. Nothing about this idea sounded even the slightest bit intriguing to Chick’s Picks, but after a stressful week, she decided to give it a try.Chick’s Picks was right—she found little stress relief stretching her body in ways it did not belong. To make matters worse, her trusty crystal ball could not withstand the heat of the 105-degree studio. Week four brings with it the time to separate the wheat from the chaff in the WPIAL football season. You might get to this week with a pretty nice looking record based on some favorable scheduling. Time is running out on teams dodging the upper echelon of their section. Sooner or later , you are going to run into a playoff caliber football team, if it is sooner, it will be this week, if it is later it will be next. Hello, hello, hello...is there anybody out there? OK, my apologies to Pink Floyd, but a day after one of the busiest Friday's in WPIAL history with 61 contests came one of the quietest regular season Saturday's in the history of District 7. There was only one game on tap in the entire WPIAL as all eyes were on the Class A Eastern Conference battle in Oakmont. Crazy...kooky...strange...horror. Those are all word that are usually associated with Friday the 13th. With a chill in the air, those words came to life on the football fields around Southwestern Pennsylvania with some strange results and some serious injuries. But after two weeks, could this be the year of runners in WPIAL football?While WPIAL football again has some impressive passers, the running statistics have been big through the first two weeks. Take a look:*It’s considered a nice night when a team has two 100-yard rushers in a game. It is extremely unusual when a team has two 200-yard rushers. Welcome to Week 3. The Boss had been in desperate need of a new smart phone for much longer than Chick’s Picks could remember. Although MSA Sports is continually evolving in the social media world, The Boss has turned those reigns over to his people, while remaining content with his early edition Blackberry—surely one of the first models ever made.The ancient artifact was still an integral part of Friday nights at MSA Sports World Headquarters, with the tall task of receiving text messages of score updates from across the WPIAL. Crossover play is the highlight this week in the district college football slate as the PSAC Eastern and Western Divisions square off. It was the first time the Red Raiders were blanked since 2008. On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon for high school football, nine district teams took to the field in an effort to keep the high school offense going that began on Thursday and continued big time on Friday.
