National Letter of Intent Day: Division I-A Signings From WPIAL Class of 2013

It was a down year for top talent coming out of District 7. A year ago, 32 WPIAL football players put their John Hancock to paper and faxed their futures plans to their respective Division I-A schools. On National Letter of Intent Day 2013, only 18 players from the WPIAL took part in the annual process Wednesday morning. Here is a rundown of the players and the Division I-A FBS schools they are now officially headed to.

Bob Jacoby Steps Down As Bishop Canevin Football Coach

Clairton Football Star Tyler Boyd Picks Pitt
January 5, 2013
After losing out to Alabama in the Robert Foster sweepstakes before the holidays, Pitt has landed the other top recruit from the WPIAL. Saturday afternoon before a national audience at the US Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, Boyd gave a verbal commitment to play his college football at the University of Pittsburgh.Boyd picks Pitt over many schools that had offered, including Penn State, west Virginia, Michigan State and Rutgers.

Central Valley Standout Robert Foster is Alabama Bound

To the surprise of many, Central Valley star wide receiver/defensive back Robert Foster will not follow in Rushel Shell's footsteps and stay home to play his college ball at Pitt. While the Panthers were one of his two finalists, Foster made a verbal commitment to play for the Crimson Tide of Alabama Friday afternoon.Regarded as one of, if not the top recruit in the WPIAL this year, Foster was recruited by all the big name schools throughout the nation, but shrunk his final choices to Pitt and Alabama. Many felt he would stay in Western Pennsylvania and play for the University of Pittsburgh, much like the top recruit from a year ago, Rushel Shell from Hopewell did.

North Allegheny, Clairton, Erie Prep & Wyomissing Win 2012 PIAA Football Titles

The West ended up going 3-1 against the East in the PIAA football championships in 2012. The Clairton Bears finished off a third straight 16-0 season with a fourth consecutive PIAA Class A state football championship. The win extends the longest high school football winning streak in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania to 63 in a row. Erie Cathedral Prep won the Class AAA state title while North Allegheny made it two Class AAAA state crowns in the last three years. Only Aliquippa came up three points short of a clean sweep for the WPIAL and Western Pa. The North Allegheny Tigers completed an undefeated season with a record setting 63-28 victory over the Coatesville Red Raiders in the PIAA Quad-A Championship game on Saturday night at Hersheypark Stadium.

Wyomissing Beats Aliquippa In State AA Battle Of Unbeatens
In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Wyomissing Spartans won their first ever PIAA football championship with a 17-14 victory over the WPIAL champion Aliquippa Quips on Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium.Wyomissing dodged some bullets early in the contest and forced Aliquippa to come up empty four times in the red zone in the contest. Mason Smith ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. The Spartans defense was in a true bend but not break mode, allowed Aliquippa to run for 323 yards but stopping the Quips when they needed to. Jonah Bowman set a state championship record with a 52 yard field goal in the third quarter for the Spartans.
