It was rare air in the 2009 District 8 football finals as Pittsburgh City League powers Perry and Brashear were spectators for a game they were often participants in. However all was back to normal in the 2010 City League title game as the Commodores and Bulls battled for gold at Cupples Stadium on the South Side.CTK 2011 – High School Football Rule Changes
With the 2011 high school football season quickly approaching, it is always best to know any rule changes for the upcoming season. South Fayette enjoyed a breakout season in 2009. They went undefeated in the regular season and captured the Class AA Century Conference championship. However their season came to a bitter end in a wild shootout loss to Aliquippa in the WPIAL Quarterfinals. They are few and far between, but we have seen teams pull off perfect football seasons before in the WPIAL. However the new kids on the block in Class AAA went for perfection in a different way that has never been done before. One Season - One Championship. It had been two decades since one of the WPIAL Class AAAA's top football programs had won a district championship. However that drought ended when North Allegheny captured gold by beating the 2009 champion Woodland Hills Wolverines in the WPIAL finals at Heinz Field. There are 126 schools in the WPIAL that field a high school football team. While a majority still begin at 7:30pm, 38 of them now kickoff their home games at 7:00pm, including the enire Class AAA Keystone Conference. One star football player and one star softball player have made their college choices this week. India McCoy is bar hopping like few girls have in the history of the WPIAL. McCoy is only a sophomore at Ambridge, but she already has established herself as one of the best high jumpers in league history. Aliquippa and Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin was the only former WPIAL football player taken in the First Round of the 2011 NFL Draft on Thursday night. Come late May, dont be surprised if the Elizabeth Forward baseball players turn into Champs champs. The Elizabeth Forward baseball program continues to rise under seventh-year coach Frank Champ.
