Scholastic Notebook – 11/11/2016
November 11, 2016
The latest national high school rankings were released earlier this week and there is a WPIAL team at No. 3 in the country. You might be thinking that Pittsburgh Central Catholic is gaining more national acclaim. But this has nothing to do with Central Catholic, or any other WPIAL team. In fact, this has nothing to do with football. We’re talking girls soccer. The Norwin girls are the No. 3 team in the country in the weekly National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings. Norwin’s impressive season has jumped the Knights up the rankings. They were No. 10 two weeks ago, and No. 4 last week. The only teams ranked ahead of Norwin are Davis High School (Utah) and Glastonbury (Conn.).

It was a first-time occurrence earlier this season when Armstrong’s Zane Dudek, Clairton’s Lamont Wade and Steel Valley’s DeWayne Murray all surpassed 5,000 career yards rushing. Of the 19 running backs in WPIAL history who ran for 5,000, Dudek, Wade and Murray were the first trio to do it in the same year. But that trio isn’t just settling at 5,000. They could be the three amigos for 6,000.

PIAA Western Regional Golf Championships
October 18, 2016
It was early season weather conditions for district golfers trying to qualify for the state championships next week. The PIAA held the Western Regional Championships on Monday at Thoms Run Golf Course at Chestnut Ridge and the big story was not that 38 WPIAL qualified to move on for a shot at state gold, it was that two of the four WPIAL champions did not advance. Boys 3-A WPIAL champ Gregor Meyer of Fox Chapel and Girls 3-A champ Caroline Wrigley of North Allegheny did not make the cut, however 24 boys and 14 girls did qualify for the two day PIAA Individual Golf Championships on October 24th and 25th at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. At least in two respects, there has never been a fall sports season like this at Derry Area High School. The Derry football team is perfect and the girls soccer team is headed to the postseason. No one has ever been able to say those two things before. Derry’s football team is 7-0. The last time Derry was 7-0 was 1983. That year, the Trojans lost their eighth game to Greensburg Central Catholic. Derry will try to go 8-0 with a win against Ellwood City Friday. Derry has never had a regular season with a perfect record. Derry Township had a perfect record in the 1930s, but that was before the school merged with Derry Borough to form Derry Area.

Speaking of 2012, that was the last time Sewickley Academy did NOT win the Class 2-A WPIAL boys team golf title as the Panthers captured a fourth consecutive crown on Thursday at the Cedarbrook Golf Club and a 7th championship for SA overall. Here are all the results from 2016 WPIAL Boys Team Golf Playoffs. WPIAL CLASS 3-A BOYS TEAM GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS: AT Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver:

NA edged Shady Side Academy by one stroke Thursday to win the 3-A crown. Meanwhile, Greensburg Central Catholic remained perfect in Class 2-A...two years of having a girls golf team and a second straight WPIAL championship after a three stroke victory over former champ Central Valley at the Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver. Here are all of the results from the 2016 WPIAL Girls Team Golf Playoffs. WPIAL CLASS 3-A GIRLS TEAM GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS:

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Macky Fouse
October 10, 2016
Last week in the WPIAL girls golf championship, Central Valley's Kiaria Porter claimed the Class AA title. Porter could eventually become the next great in the brief but impressive history of the Warriors girls golf team. Prior to her, though, it was Macky Fouse who captured both individual and team championships. Fouse, now a junior on the Seton Hall golf squad, is profiled this week for the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Fouse's resume was incredibly impressive during her time at Central Valley, as she helped guide to Warriors to an undefeated mark of 60-0 in dual meets over her four years, as well as four team WPIAL championships.

Caroline Wrigley of North Allegheny claimed the 3-A crown with a 3 over par 75, while Kiaria Porter of Central Valley shot a 6 over 78. Porter bested two-time champion Olivia Zambruno of Greensburg Central Catholic by two strokes. Wrigley finished fifth in last year’s championship. She started the day on a sour note with two bogeys but rebounded strong with seven pars to close out the front nine. Trailing Peters Township senior Mia Kness by two shots at the turn, she was able to take the lead after the 10th hole with a birdie on the par 4 on the Orchard nine, while Kness ran into trouble and posted a 6.

Fort Cherry is in a drive for five. If the Rangers complete the drive, it will be the first time in 18 years. The Fort Cherrry football team is 4-0. The Rangers have been somewhat of a surprise this year after going 2-7 and 3-6 the past two seasons. Fort Cherry is likely to go to 5-0 because the Rangers play Friday night against West Greene, which is 1-4. This is the fourth time in nine seasons that Fort Cherry has started the season 4-0. The others were in 2008, 2009 and 2013. But every year, Fort Cherry lost its fifth game to Clairton. The last time Fort Cherry started 5-0 was 1998. That year, the Rangers finished the regular season with a 9-0 record before losing in the first round of the playoffs to Clairton.

Riverside Freshman Skyler Fox Wins 2016 WPIAL 2-A Golf Title
September 29, 2016
Despite his youth, Riverside's Skyler Fox showed no signs of freshman nerves, as he made par on the 18th hole to secure the 2016 WPIAL Boys Class 2A Individual Championship. Fox, who also had the best qualifying round last week, shot a two-over 72 to claim gold at Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley. Holding a one stroke lead entering the tee box on the par-4 final hole, Fox hit his drive to the right of the fairway, into the rough. He produced a spectacular second shot that found the green, though, which allowed him two opportunities with the putter. Although his first attempt on a downhill lie traveled past the cup, Fox sank a short uphill putt to conclude his incredible round. He shot a 36 on both the front and back nine.

At Mapletown, Rush rushes. A lot. Dylan Rush is a junior running back at Mapletown who has enjoyed a big season so far. He is the second-leading rusher in the WPIAL with 1,027 yards. The only running back who is ahead of him is Armstrong’s Zane Dudek, who has 1,201. Rush stands only 5 feet 9 and weighs 180 pounds. You have to wonder how strong Rush’s back is, because he is carrying the Mapletown team on it. Rush’s number of carries isn’t on the high side. It’s on the ridiculous side. In four games, Rush has carried the ball 147 times. That’s 36.8 times a game. The rest of Mapletown’s team has 31 carries. On top of that, Mapletown has thrown 22 passes – and Rush has attempted seven of them.

MSA SPORTS CUP RESULTS – A New Champ Wins Double-A
July 9, 2016
For only the fifth time in the thirteen years of the MSA Sports Cup Class AA chase, the torch has been passed to a new champion. Greensburg Central Catholic won the first three years, followed by a five year run by Shady Side Academy and three of the last four years the AA Cup has gone to Quaker Valley with a one year run at the top by Seton-LaSalle two years ago. Now the AA crown is coming to Beaver County thanks to Beaver High School. After a couple of close calls in recent years, the Bobcats were lifted to the top spot in part because of district championships won in each season...girls tennis in the fall, ice hockey in the winter and a second straight WPIAL title in girls track & field in the spring.
