It has become a tradition like no other...at least during the holidays here at MSA Sports. It's time to look back at another high school sports year with the top stories from around the WPIAL in 2013. We conclude our countdown with the five stories that ended up #5 through #1. #5 - Section 3 Superiority Everybody knew that WPIAL Class AAAA Section 3 in boys basketball was special. But the strength of the four postseason representatives ended up being historic. #1 seed New Castle, #2-seed North Allegheny, #3-seed Hampotn and #12-seed Seneca Valley all advanced through the First Round...then through the Quarterfinals before making the Class AAAA Semifinals a personal Section 3 in-house tournament.MSA Sports Countdown of Top 25 WPIAL Stories of 2013 – 12/29/13

We continue our countdown with the five stories that ended up #20 through #16. #20 - Virgin Playoff Teams There are teams that haven't played in the WPIAL football playoffs in 'X' amount of years, then there are schools that have never played in a WPIAL football game...ever. Until this 2013 season that is. Summit Academy is a small court-adjudicated facility in rural Butler County that started in 1998. We celebrated America's Birthday earlier this month with various parades and fireworks. You'll forgive us if we celebrate the 2012-2013 school year with just a parade and no pyrotechnics. It was been another great high school sports year in District 7 of the PIAA. All of us here at the MSA Sports Network and Management Science Associates thank our sponsors and fans for their support during the school year. The first day of the two day WPIAL swimming championships from the University of Pittsburgh are in the books. Day Two can be heard Friday on MSA Sports with Class AA at 10:00am and Class AAA at 3:00pm. The Battle to the Bluff is about to begin, and the only place to follow the action of the start of the February Frenzy is here this week here on the MSA Sports Network. We start with the WPIAL Basketball Playoff Pairings Show and then follow-up with EVERY WPIAL boys and girls basketball postseason contest starting this weekend. We also have the final week of the regular season for boys and girls hoops in District 6, men's and women's college hoops along with D-6 scholastic wrestling and the WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling Sectionals and PIHL high school hockey, plus the PIHL Power Play Show, the WPIAL Roundball Report and Inside the WPIAL Wrestling Circle all this week here at MSAsports.netP-R’s Dominic Giordano and CV’s Maria Lohman Repeat as WPIAL Diving Champs

The winter WPIAL diving championships began early Friday afternoon at South Park High School in South Park with nine invitations to the PIAA state diving championships up for grabs.The boys field saw a lot of familiar faces carry over from the 2012 competition into 2013's. With the exception of South Park's Bill Rountree, the top six divers from last year were in the field this year. The success of each of these divers had indeed carried over into Friday's dive. The sixteen diver field had a lot of great dives and a few duds during the duration of the competition. Going into the semifinals and the final round the group had narrowed itself down to three divers vying for the number one spot.Scholastic Notebook – 02/22/2013

London Bound: Local Athletes on the USA Olympic Team – Cassidy Krug

Former WPIAL and PIAA champion and Montour High School graduate Cassidy Krug has qualified for the 2012 London Olympics in the 3 meter diving springboard competition. Krug averaged over 364.95 per round at the US Olympic diving trials in Federal Way Washington during the week of June of June 17th thru 22nd. Her overall meet score was 1094.85 was good enough for first place as she outdistanced 2nd place finisher and Olympic qualifier Christina Loukas by 77 points. Krug who missed qualifying in 2004 but went to Athens as a runner to help her teammates and fellow Olympians, and 2008 where she failed due to injuries, finally was able to secure the long sought after Olympics berth.2011-2012 WPIAL and PITTSBURGH CITY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS on PARADE

Seven of the eight teams in the WPIAL baseball finals are quite familiar with this championship stuff. They all have won at least one title in the past nine seasons. As championship traditions go, the eighth team in the finals is like the odd man out. Belle Vernon has never won a WPIAL championship, and the WPIAL has been staging championships since 1914. Belle Vernon will try to win its first title when it plays Blackhawk in the Class AAA championship Tuesday night at Consol Energy Field in Washington.WPIAL Hall of Fame Class of 2012

Neil Walker is known for his baseball talent. The current Pirates second baseman had an unforgettable baseball career at Pine-Richland High School and was a first-round draft pick. But it is what Walker also did in other sports that helped earn him a spot in the WPIAL Hall of Fame. The WPIAL Hall of Fame class for 2012 was announced Thursday at a news conference, and Walker was one of the selections. Walker was in Los Angeles with the Pirates, but his father was at the news conference at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District. Walker had a terrific baseball career at Pine-Richland, starting four seasons and batting .504 for his career. He hit .657 as a senior with 13 home runs, 42 RBIs and a 1.403 slugging percentage for a WPIAL championship team.Mars Margaret Gruber the State Golden Girl in PIAA Swimming

There was only one Class AA girls swimmer who won a state title this weekend at Bucknell University, but the Mars swimmer comes home as a champion with a new record to go with her two gold medalist. Margaret Gruber of Mars won both the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly, setting a new PIAA championship record in that race with a time of 54.43.Here are all of the results from the PIAA Girls Class AA swimming and diving finals.SSA Foursome Join QV and Mars Swimmers Win PIAA AA Titles
Two WPIAL Boys Class AA individuals and one team brought home gold from Bucknell University on Saturday in the PIAA Class AA swimming and diving championships. Bobby Francis of Quaker valley won gold in the 100-yard breaststroke while Kurt Muehlheuser of Mars won the state title in the 100-yard backstroke. The foursome of Chris Leech, Ryan Koul, Thaddeus Ellis and Grant Zentgraf from Shady Side Academy won the 200-yard freestyle relay championship. Here are all of the results from the two day event.
