The Battle to the Bluff is about to begin, and the only place to follow the action of the start of the February Frenzy is here this week here on the MSA Sports Network. We start with the WPIAL Basketball Playoff Pairings Show and then follow-up with EVERY WPIAL boys and girls basketball postseason contest starting this weekend. We also have the final week of the regular season for boys and girls hoops in District 6, men's and women's college hoops along with D-6 scholastic wrestling and the WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling Sectionals and PIHL high school hockey, plus the PIHL Power Play Show, the WPIAL Roundball Report and Inside the WPIAL Wrestling Circle all this week here at MSAsports.netP-R’s Dominic Giordano and CV’s Maria Lohman Repeat as WPIAL Diving Champs

The winter WPIAL diving championships began early Friday afternoon at South Park High School in South Park with nine invitations to the PIAA state diving championships up for grabs.The boys field saw a lot of familiar faces carry over from the 2012 competition into 2013's. With the exception of South Park's Bill Rountree, the top six divers from last year were in the field this year. The success of each of these divers had indeed carried over into Friday's dive. The sixteen diver field had a lot of great dives and a few duds during the duration of the competition. Going into the semifinals and the final round the group had narrowed itself down to three divers vying for the number one spot.Scholastic Notebook – 02/22/2013

London Bound: Local Athletes on the USA Olympic Team – Cassidy Krug

Former WPIAL and PIAA champion and Montour High School graduate Cassidy Krug has qualified for the 2012 London Olympics in the 3 meter diving springboard competition. Krug averaged over 364.95 per round at the US Olympic diving trials in Federal Way Washington during the week of June of June 17th thru 22nd. Her overall meet score was 1094.85 was good enough for first place as she outdistanced 2nd place finisher and Olympic qualifier Christina Loukas by 77 points. Krug who missed qualifying in 2004 but went to Athens as a runner to help her teammates and fellow Olympians, and 2008 where she failed due to injuries, finally was able to secure the long sought after Olympics berth.2011-2012 WPIAL and PITTSBURGH CITY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS on PARADE

Seven of the eight teams in the WPIAL baseball finals are quite familiar with this championship stuff. They all have won at least one title in the past nine seasons. As championship traditions go, the eighth team in the finals is like the odd man out. Belle Vernon has never won a WPIAL championship, and the WPIAL has been staging championships since 1914. Belle Vernon will try to win its first title when it plays Blackhawk in the Class AAA championship Tuesday night at Consol Energy Field in Washington.WPIAL Hall of Fame Class of 2012

Neil Walker is known for his baseball talent. The current Pirates second baseman had an unforgettable baseball career at Pine-Richland High School and was a first-round draft pick. But it is what Walker also did in other sports that helped earn him a spot in the WPIAL Hall of Fame. The WPIAL Hall of Fame class for 2012 was announced Thursday at a news conference, and Walker was one of the selections. Walker was in Los Angeles with the Pirates, but his father was at the news conference at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District. Walker had a terrific baseball career at Pine-Richland, starting four seasons and batting .504 for his career. He hit .657 as a senior with 13 home runs, 42 RBIs and a 1.403 slugging percentage for a WPIAL championship team.Mars Margaret Gruber the State Golden Girl in PIAA Swimming

There was only one Class AA girls swimmer who won a state title this weekend at Bucknell University, but the Mars swimmer comes home as a champion with a new record to go with her two gold medalist. Two WPIAL Boys Class AA individuals and one team brought home gold from Bucknell University on Saturday in the PIAA Class AA swimming and diving championships. Bobby Francis of Quaker valley won gold in the 100-yard breaststroke while Kurt Muehlheuser of Mars won the state title in the 100-yard backstroke. The foursome of Chris Leech, Ryan Koul, Thaddeus Ellis and Grant Zentgraf from Shady Side Academy won the 200-yard freestyle relay championship. WPIAL girls Class AAA swimmers had to 'team' up and go 'diving' to find gold at the 2012 PIAA Girls Class AAA swimming and diving championships at Bucknell University. The North Allegheny foursome of Katerina Borisov, Allie Pennetti, Arielle Krigger and Kally Vanderbilt won the 200 freestyle relay while WPIAL diving champion Lauren Lamendola repeated her golden performance to win the PIAA state crown.Three WPIAL Boys AAA Swimmers Win PIAA Championships
Three WPIAL boys Class AAA swimmers brought home the gold from the state swimming and diving championships at Bucknell University, including a pair of PIAA titles for Penn-Trafford's Christian McCurdy, who took first place in the 400 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Lucas Bureau of Latrobe won gold in the 200 freestyle while Matt Buerger of North Allegheny won a state championship in the 200 individual medley. At Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday, the West Allegheny Indians win their second consecutive AA WPIAL girls swimming championship. The Indians came into day two with a 35.5 point lead. They cruised to an easy victory outscoring 2nd place Blackhawk by 92 points. South Fayette also finished tied for 2nd place. Shady Side Academy finished 4th 98.5 back. In the boys AA championships, Indiana wins their second straight WPIAL title. The Indians led by 56 points a big first day, but the Hampton Talbots closed the gap to 10 points mid way thru day two. Indiana pulled away near the end to win by 28 points. After Day One of the McDonald’s/WPIAL Boys and Girls Swimming Championships, the West Allegheny Indians hold a 33 point lead to try and claim a second straight Girls Class AA championship, while on the boys side, Indiana holds a sizable lead over Hampton for a second straight boys championship.Individually on the girls side, junior Braelyn Tracy of Elizabeth Forward upset defending champion Kara Kaulius of West Allegheny for the 200 Freestyle title. Margaret Gruber of Mars claimed her second straight championship in the 100 Butterfly. A pair of freshman also claimed WPIAL gold, Maddie Bartrug of South Fayette in the 50 Freestyle and Bria Otwell of Freeport in the 200 IM.Senior Bobby Francis of Quaker Valley, the 2011 breaststroke champion, claimed gold in the 200 IM on the boys side.Here are the individual and team standings after the opening day:
