One of the longest championship dynasty's in WPIAL history continued on Thursday as Sewickley Academy swept past Indiana 5-0 to win the WPIAL Class 2-A boys team tennis title. The championship is the 13th in a row for the Panthers and 21 of the last 24 2-A crowns since their first district championship in 1993. While it pales in comparison, Fox Chapel won their second straight Class 3-A title with a victory over top-seed Peters Township. Norwin’s Santilli & Fox Chapel’s Nord/James Win State Tennis Titles

Three WPIAL tennis players were able to win Class 3-A state titles Saturday at the 2016 PIAA Girls Singles and Doubles Tennis Championships at the Hershey Racquet Club. While district players were shut out of the medal chanse in Class 2-A, Maria Santili of Norwin won the PIAA 3-A singles title while Amanda Nord and Charlotte James of Fox Chapel cruised to the PIAA 3-A double championship. Norwin's Santili a junior won 6-4 6-4 over Eliza Askarova from George Washington. Up until the finals, Santili had only lost 9 total games in 6 sets and reached the finals rather easily. A WPIAL girls team tennis squad had won ten consecutive Class 3-A state crowns including three in a row for North Allegheny. That decade of dominance ended Saturday though when the Tigers shot at a fourth straight state crown came up short when they fell to Harriton. Meanwhile, the drought continues for WPIAL schools in Class 2-A with only one state champion ever (Sewickley Academy in 2011). Beaver made it interesting as the WPIAL champs reached the finals for a second straight year only to fall to Wyomissing. The title for Harriton was the Rams first in 3-A and 8th overall while Wyomissing wins fifth PIAA title and first for the Spartans since 2003. Last year, Amanda Nord and Laurel Shymansky of Fox Chapel beat Tina Li and Ashley Huang of North Allegheny to win the WPIAL Class AAA girls doubles tennis title. This year, Nord and new partner Charlotte James did it again, as they beat the top-seed duo of Li and Huang to win the 2016 WPIAL Girls Doubles Tennis Class 3-A crowns on Friday. In 2-A, Kelsey Heckert and Katie McLaughlin beat Indiana teammates Margaux Marcus and Lauren Bertig to claim 2-A gold. Norwin’s Santilli and OLSH’s Marks Win WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis Crowns

Two new champions were crowned Friday afternoon at Moon High School at the 2016 WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis Championships. Maria Santilli of Norwin beat Marlo Schiffman of Upper St. Clair 6-3, 6-2 in a very competitive 3-A title match with many good rallies. Santilli, who was in command in both sets, controlled play from the baseline and showed a lot of emotion in the straight set victory. Schiffman, only a freshman, will be in contention for WPIAL gold the next three years. in the Class 2-A Finals, Katherine Marks of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart knocked off Elle Santora of Knoch 6-3, 6-1. Top-seed Marks trailed 2-1 early in first set, but then won 10 straight games at one point.Scholastic Notebook – 10/14/2016
At least in two respects, there has never been a fall sports season like this at Derry Area High School. The Derry football team is perfect and the girls soccer team is headed to the postseason. No one has ever been able to say those two things before. Derry’s football team is 7-0. The last time Derry was 7-0 was 1983. That year, the Trojans lost their eighth game to Greensburg Central Catholic. Derry will try to go 8-0 with a win against Ellwood City Friday. Derry has never had a regular season with a perfect record. North Allegheny captured a fourth straight WPIAL 3-A girls team tennis crown Wednesday while Beaver was able to repeat as district 2-A champions. The Tigers four-peat was a nail biter, as they edged Mount Lebanon 3-2 at Sewickley Academy. Meanwhile the Bobcats postseason dominance continued as they outscored their four opponents 19-1 after sweeping past Neshannock 5-0 at North Allegheny High School.
