North Allegheny & Sewickley Academy Win WPIAL Team Tennis Gold

Two programs with recent success walked away from Bethel Park High School on Thursday with district gold. North Allegheny repeated as Class AAA champs by knocking off Shady Side Academy, while Sewickley Academy claimed a fourth WPIAL Class AA championship in the last seven years with a victory over cinderella Indiana. Laurel Shymansky had a different doubles partner this year, but she once again has that golden feeling. She joined forces with Lacey Cohen in 2013 to bring gold to Fox Chapel High School, now she is a champion again as she and her partner Amanda Nord won the Class AAA doubles tennis title in three sets Thursday afternoon at Shady Side Academy. Meanwhile in Class AA, it was a family feud in the finals as the Quaker Valley High School Bojalad sisters defeated the Beaver High School Taylor sisters in straight sets. Whether it’s the football end zone or a soccer net, both places are treated like a crime zone by the fall sports teams at Pittsburgh Central Catholic. They might as well put yellow tape around the end zone or net because the Central Catholic teams take a “keep out” attitude towards them. It is unusual for two fall sports teams to have such a successful zero tolerance policy. The Central Catholic football team is 4-0 and has allowed only seven points in four games. The Vikings have three shutouts and are the No. 1 defensive team in the WPIAL. The Central Catholic boys soccer team has played 11 games and has allowed only one goal. The Vikings are 11-0 and have outscored opponents, 56-1.

A pair of juniors were crowned first time champions Thursday afternoon at Shady Side Academy in two totally different championship matches. Here are recaps from both the Class AAA and Class AA WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis Championships. The first district championships of the 2014-2015 school year were decided Thursday with a pair of first time title winner crowned at the Shady Side Academy tennis courts Thursday afternoon. The battle of sisters never really materialized in the Class AA finals as junior Alyvia Kluska and sophomore Michaela Kluska played four games, then shook hands and announced that Alyvia would win the title via default. Last year, the two sisters were scheduled to meet in the consolation match and older sister Alyvia forfeited so younger sister Michaela could qualify for the states. Both sisters qualify for the PIAA singles playoffs next month. In Class AAA, top-seed junior Ananya Dua won on her home court by beating Charlotte Madson in straight sets to win the championship.Scholastic Notebook – 09/12/2014

They haven’t exactly beaten world-class competition, but Norwin is still 2-0. After tonight, the Knights could be in a spot where they haven’t been in 15 years. Norwin plays at Seneca Valley in a non-conference game. While Seneca Valley (0-2) is trying to find itself, Norwin is trying to go 3-0 for the first time in 15 years. The last time Norwin was 3-0 was 1999, one of the greatest seasons in Norwin history. The Knights finished 8-4 and made it to the WPIAL semifinals before losing to Cecil Howard and McKeesport.
MSA SPORTS CUP: Sewickley Academy Back on Top After Winning Class A Cup

Eight time champion Sewickley Academy and defending champ Greensburg Central Catholic were deadlocked with 360 points each with one more sport to calculate in the chase for the 2013-2014 MSA Sports Class A Cup. That one sports was boy tennis, which was great news for Panthers fans and bad news for everybody else in Class A. A district title and state runner-up in boys tennis helped Sewickley Academy win the MSA Sports Cup for the ninth time in eleven years.

Another school year and another MSA Sports Cup in Class AAAA for North Allegheny High School. NA captured their 11th Cup in eleven years since the MSA Sports Network started this school year long competition to determine the top sports programs in each classification. There are 20 sports in which schools can earn points in the competition and for the second straight year and only the second time in this history of the coveted competition, the Tigers earned points in ALL of them. In the 2012-2013 school year, North Allegheny scored a mind-numbing and record 1,115 points. In 2013-2014, they had to settle for a mere 965 points. Seneca Valley has been the surprise team of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs. The Raiders are the No. 16 seed, but find themselves in the semifinals. One more win and Seneca Valley will make history, but not because of their seeding. Seneca Valley plays Pine-Richland in a semifinal game Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. A win will put Seneca Valley into the championship game for the fourth year in a row. It has been at least 50 years since a team made it to a title game four consecutive years. In fact, it is likely that no team has ever made it to a championship four years in a row. So far in the playoffs, Seneca Valley has knocked off No. 1 seed Hempfield, 10-5, and also No. 9 seed Shaler, 3-0. Smith Does it All

It wasn't easy, but Shady Side Academy captured its fourth straight Class AAA championship with a narrow victory over Mount Lebanon Thursday afternoon at North Allegheny High School. Meanwhile, the dynasty continues in Class AA as Sewickley Academy made it ELEVEN consecutive district championships with a victory over Mars. The streaks continued in 2014. 2009 was the last time a duo from Sewickley Academy did not win gold in the district boys doubles tennis tournaments as another Panthers duo, this time Ryan Gex & Luke Vith won it all in Class AA. Meanwhile, the streak is now four in a row for Shady Side Academy in Class AAA and three straight for the Indians Chris Grubbs, who teamed with Alok Nimgaonkar to win back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013 and with Michael Kann this season to win another doubles crown. A senior and a freshman claimed the first gold of the spring on Tuesday afternoon. Pittsburgh Central Catholic senior Adam Blasinsky claimed a second consecutive championship while Sewickley Academy ninth grader Luke Ross also won in straight sets. The WPIAL Board of Control has approved the final seasonal alignment starting next season as the district spring sports sectional alignment has been approved. The new alignment kicks into affect next spring for WPIAL Baseball, Softball, Boys Volley, Boys Tennis, Boys Track & Field and Girls Track & Field. The WPIAL Board of Control officially passed the new alignments for the WPIAL fall sports on Tuesday afternoon, including girls volleyball, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross-country, girls tennis and girls field hockey. A couple of big changes occur in Girls Tennis where there are more teams in fewer sections and in Boys and Girls Cross-Country where there are only two duel-class divisions, but there will be three classifications for the championships. While there was nothing to write home about for the WPIAL qualifiers in the Class AA state doubles and singles tournaments, it turned out to be a golden success for district doubles and singles girls tennis players in Class AAA this weekend at the Hershey Racquet Club in Hershey.While Class AA had no qualifiers make it to the Semifinals on Saturday in the PIAA Singles or Doubles postseason, Class AAA had two qualifiers in each make it to the final day. and when the last winner was served, Marlys Bridgham of Pine-Richland won the state Class AAA singles championship and the duo of Laurel Shymansky and Lacy Cohen claimed the Triple-A state doubles championship.North Allegheny Wins 2013 PIAA AAA Team Tennis Gold

North Allegheny winning a championship is not breaking news. However a week after winning their very first WPIAL Girls Team Tennis Class AAA title, the Tigers added their first ever state tennis crown to their crown trophy case. North Allegheny edged District 1 champion Methacton Saturday evening in Hershey to claim the PIAA Triple A championship. District 10 Mercyhurst Prep won the Class AA state championship. North Allegheny has won a lot of WPIAL gold in its rich, athletic history. now for the first time, they can add a girls tennis crown to the trophy case. The Tigers captured their first ever district girls tennis title with a victory over Shady Side Academy Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, Greensburg Central Catholic is celebrating its first girls team tennis championship in 14 years. The Centurions edged Sewickley Academy 3-2 in the finals Thursday to win the schools third Class AA district title and first since 1999. The Beaver football team changed its offense this year, going to a spread offense with much more passing.You could say the new offense has been a Rowse-ing success.Alex Rowse is Beaver’s quarterback and is doing things unheard of by Beaver quarterbacks. After six weeks of the season, Rowse leads the entire WPIAL in passing yardage with 1,581 yards. To put that in perspective, consider that last year’s quarterbacks – Rowse and Austin Ross - had less than 1,000 yards passing combined.
