2011 PIAA Boys and Girls Track and Field Day Two Update

Sprinters Trenton Coles of Clairton and Iman Wilkerson of Penn Hills turned a double play at the PIAA track and field championships Saturday at Shippensburg University. Coles, a junior, and Wilkerson, a senior, were the only double winners from the WPIAL on the final day of the two-day meet at Shippensburg University. Both won the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Hempfield and Riverside Take Titles in 2011 WPIAL Boys Track & Field Team Championships
May 13, 2011
After a year as runner-up, Riverside is back on top of the WPIAL Class AA Boys Team Track & Field hill. The Panthers beat out Washington, South Fayette and Freedom Thursday afternoon at West Mifflin High School to win a fourth WPIAL championship in the last five years. Meanwhile, Hempfield edged North Allegheny, Mount Lebanon and Baldwin to win the Class AAA title.

Butler and Freeport are Golden in 2011 WPIAL Girls Track & Field Team Championships
The Butler girls track and field team are the golden girls...again! The Golden Tornado captured back-to-back WPIAL Girls Class AAA Team Track and Field crown by beating Hempfield, Norwin and Butler Thursday afternoon at West Mifflin High School. In the Class AA finals, Freeport took home the gold by beating out Mount Pleasant, Freedom and South Fayette.

India McCoy is bar hopping like few girls have in the history of the WPIAL. McCoy is only a sophomore at Ambridge, but she already has established herself as one of the best high jumpers in league history. On Friday night at the Baldwin Invitational, McCoy tied a meet record by clearing 5 feet 8 inches.

The decision might come as a surprise to some because college interest was starting to pick up in Mason, who led the WPIAL in scoring last season at 33.3 points and scored 64 in one game. Butler University coach Brad Stevens came to watch Mason work out at Highlands last week and requested grade transcripts on Mason. No scholarship offer was made.

Come late May, dont be surprised if the Elizabeth Forward baseball players turn into Champs champs. The Elizabeth Forward baseball program continues to rise under seventh-year coach Frank Champ. After a breakout season in 2010, the Warriors have been the most dominant Class AAA team so far in 2011.

It was in the mid 1970s and young Riverside High School baseball coach Dan Oliastro drafted a letter of resignation. There are 500 reasons why Riverside is glad Oliastro never handed in that letter to the school board. On Thursday, Oliastro won his 500th career game as Riversides coach when the Panthers defeated Beaver Falls, 4-0, in a WPIAL Class AA Section 5 game.
