WPIAL Plays of the Week – WPIAL Championships 2015
December 1, 2015
Nearly three months of terrific football action culminated on Saturday with the WPIAL Championship games at Heinz Field. Four teams were crowned champions of their respective classifications, including one repeat winner, the Clairton Bears. Additionally, the Aliquippa Quips, Thomas Jefferson Jaguars and Central Catholic Vikings all hoisted the trophies, securing their spot in the PIAA postseason. Congratulations to all of the winners, as well as every team and all the players and coaches for a wonderful 2015 WPIAL campaign. District College Recap For Saturday, November 28

And then there was one. Slippery Rock was the lone district team to advance in the NCAA Playoffs. Here are the recaps of ALL 3 games: Division II Playoffs/Super Region 1 Semifinals Slippery Rock 41 – Assumption 39 In a wild one at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium, the 2nd seeded Rock jumped out to an early lead and held on to advance to the regional finals. SRU notched their 17th straight home victory and takes the Rock to 12-1 overall.

And then there were three district college football teams alive in the post season. SRU and IUP hope to both advance and meet in the Super Region ! final while Duquesne makes their initial trip into the FCS playoffs. Here are previews of ALL 3 GAMES, with recaps coming Saturday night. NCAA Division II Playoffs/Super Region 1 Semifinal Assumption (11-1) at Slippery Rock (11-1)   Noon A battle of the third and second seeds in the region with the winner to advance to the regional final next weekend. The two teams have never met. Slippery Rock is ranked 8th in the D2football.com poll, while Assumption is ranked 17th.

WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week Twelve 2015

The 2015 WPIAL football season began in early September, and every team's ultimate goal at that time was to advance to Heinz Field to play for a championship. The teams that accomplished that objective were determined on Friday, as eight teams advanced from the semifinals. The majority of the contests were competitive, with several coming down to the final minutes. To that point, this week's edition of the top plays includes a final-minute touchdown pass for a team building a reputation for comeback victories, a spectacular run by a quarterback to give his team the lead, a long return touchdown on the opening kickoff, and a defensive stop on the final play of the game. Carnegie Mellon Ends A Winner in ECA Bowl Game
November 22, 2015
In the ECAC Legacy Bowl at Central Connecticut State, Carnegie Mellon defeated Bridgewater State 48-13 to pick up their third win in four bowl game appearances. Sophomore RB Sam Benger became the 21st player in D-III history to rush for more than 2 thousand yards in a season. Benger ran for 190 yards and 4 touchdowns in the win, he was named the game’s Most Outstanding Player. He opened the scoring on a 2 yard run. The Bears answered with a Danny Higgins 15 yard pass to Michael Viola. Chris Herrera gave CMU the lead for good with a 88 yard return of the ensuing kickoff and a 14-7 lead after one. Herrera scored his 2nd touchdown on a 50 yard pass from Andrew Hearon and Benger added a 1 yard run to extend the advantage at the break.

District College Football Recap for Saturday, November 21

A mix of playoff and regular season action in thecdistrict this weekend. The Division II playoffs kicked off while two local PAC teams participate in ECAC Bowls. The NEC cocludes the regular season with a title deciding tilt at Rooney Field. Here are recaps of ALL THE GAMES: Division II Playoffs/Super Region 1 Slippery Rock 40 – Virginia Union 21 Playing their first home playoff game since 1999, #10 Slippery Rock advanced to the regional semifinals with the Rock’s 8th straight win. Shamar Greene(West Mifflin) ran for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win.

Week 12 of the district college football slate has a mix of playoff games, ECAC Bowls and the final week of the NEC regular season. SRU and IUP begin their quest for a NCAA Division II title. Westminster and Carnegie Mellon play a post season game for the first time in ages, while Duquesne and Saint Francis meet with the NEC title and a playoff bid on the line. Here are previews of ALL THE GAMES: NCAA Division II Playoffs Virginia Union (8-2) at Slippery Rock (10-1)   Noon The Rock looks to change their playoff luck with the home game. Virginia Union makes their first NCAA trip in 24 years. The Panthers were 6-1 in the CIAA this season and will be well rested, having 14 days between games.

Week 11 of the district college football slate features the PSAC State Title Game and 5 rivalry games in the PAC. Here are previews of ALL THE GAMES: PSAC STATE TITLE GAME Slippery Rock (9-1) at West Chester (7-3)   Noon A win would cement the Rock into the D-II playoffs, SRU enters this week in 4th place in the Super Region 1 rankings. The Rock is ranked #9 in both the AFCA and D2football.com polls. The Rock has won 6 straight games since a loss to Seton Hill.Last week’s win over Clarion gave the Rock it’s 3rd straight trip to the title game, the Rock is the defending champions. SRU has won the West Division 15 times.

Week 10 of the college football slate saw both the PAC and PSAC West titles decided and Duquesne move into sole possession of first in the NEC. Here are recaps of ALL THE GAMES: Thomas More 36 – Case Western Reserve 32 In a battle of ranked teams for the PAC title, the #12 Saints used a defensive conversion by kyle Fuller and a luke Zajac 1 yard run to beat the #18 Spartans. Thomas More is 10-0 overall and win the conference with an 8-0 record. QB Jensen Gebhardt returned for the Saints and threw for 223 yards and 2 scores, he ran for one. Tyler Vogelpohl had 6 catches for 108 yards, Goose Cohorn had 6 grabs for 104, each had a score. Hjavier Pitts also ran for a td.

The first week of November sees a ton of early games. The PSAC West ends it’s schedule with four games. In the PAC, a battle for the top spot in Cleveland as both Thomas More and Case Western are unbeaten. Here are previews of ALL THE GAMES.  Edinboro(0-9) at Seton Hill(2-7)   Noon The Fighting Scots are 0-6 in the West Division. Darren Massey is second in the PSAC with 73 catches but only has 5 touchdowns. Edinboro is the least penalized team in the PSAC at 53 yards per game.

On Halloween, several of the district college football teams thought they lost their heads with some very lopsided scores. With just a couple of weeks remaining, Duquesne shares the lead in the NEC, Slippery Rock is looking for back to back trips to the PSAC State Title game and programs who have struggled in recent years are close to the top of the PAC standings. As October winds down, races in the PSAC-West and the PAC got a little tigher. SRU and Cal posted huge wins, while Clarion fell from the unbeaten ranks. W & J dropped from PAC title contention and likely out of the top 25 with a loss in Cleveland. Here are recaps of ALL THE GAMES: California 42 – Clarion 28 The Vulcans played the role of spoiler at home on Saturday, handing the #25 Golden Eagles their first loss of the year. John Franklin scored twice and Jimmy Wheeler(West Mifflin) once as Cal controlled the clock and the game. The Vulcan defense also stood tall with 6 interceptions.

A big Steel City matchup in Moon Township highlights this week’s preview. Clarion looks to go to 8-0, while IUP and SRU meet in Slippery Rock in a huge PSAC West game. In the PAC, W & J travels to Cleveland to meet Case Western Reserve to try and get back into the conference title picture. Here are previews of ALL the games. Senior Ricardo McCray leads the NEC at 102 yards per game for Bryant while senioe Khari Dickson averages 99 per game.
