District College Football Preview for Saturday, October 11th

The NEC kicks off conference play in week 6 of the local college football season. Slippery Rock continues to be ranked in the D-II top 25, while W & J moved up the polls after a huge win over Thomas More last week. Here are previews of ALL the games, including two that can be heard here on the Network. Thomas More (3-2) at Geneva (1-3)   2pm on WBVP 1230-AM and the MSA Sports Network. The Saints have fallen out of the top 25 after their loss to W & J last week. Thomas More is 2-1 in the PAC. Thomas More racked up 452 yards of offense last week. The Saints were led by RB Domonique Hayden with 183 yards and three touchdowns. Hayden leads the PAC with 931 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns.

District College Football Recap for Saturday, October 4th

The month of October brought cold and damp weather to this weekend’s district college football games. Two main games highlighted the schedule, an early season battle of Top 25 teams in the PAC and a pair of unbeaten in the PSAC-West. Here are recaps of ALL the games, including the Top 25 matchup on the Network. W & J 51 – Thomas More 28 Cameron Stadium in Washington saw a battle of nationally ranked teams, the fans there also saw the Presidents take a huge step towards another PAC title with a convincing win that will likely move them up the ranks in the AFCA Top 25 poll next week. Upper St. Clair’s Pete Coughlin threw for 383 yards and six touchdowns as the #25 Presidents used the skies to claim the win.

District College Football Recap for Saturday, September 27th

A wild finish in Oakland, a record setting performance in Loretto and another home win for Slippery Rock highlighted the slate of local college football action on Saturday. Here are recaps of ALL the games, including one heard here on the Network. Carnegie Mellon 22 – Geneva 21 Trailing 19-7 in the fourth quarter, freshman Nick Cook came on for an injured Aaron Channing and led the Golden Tornadoes to a touchdown, but the GT’s could not find the end zone until the game’s final play and came up just short. Geneva has now lost eight straight on the road, dating back to 2012.

Week 4 of the local college football slate has divisional play heating up in the PSAC, conference games in the PAC and a week off for Duquesne and Robert Morris. W & J also has the week off, the Presidents debuted at #24 in the AFCA Division III poll after a 48-30 victory over CMU. A battle for the PAC title comes up next week when the Presidents host Thomas More. Here are previews of ALL the games, including one that can be heard here on the Network. Geneva (1-2) at Carnegie Mellon (0-2)   1pm on WBVP 1230-AM/WMBA 1460-AM and the MSA Sports Network The Golden Tornadoes are 0-1 in the PAC, Geneva has not won a road game in over two years, falling in seven straight away from Reeves Field.

It's amazing to think that we're nearly at the halfway point of the 2014 WPIAL regular season. Where does the time go? Well, that question is coincidentally what several coaches were thinking in Week Four as, with little time left, the sideline bosses would roll the dice and go for a two-point conversion to win the ballgame. In week 3 of the district college football season, the President Athletic Conference kicked off with a pair of overtime games and the end of a long losing streak and the PSAC continued crossover play. Here are recaps of ALL the games, including two heard here on the Network. Waynesburg 44 – Geneva 38 in two overtimes Carter Hill threw his fourth touchdown of the game, hitting Zac Cappan for a 25 yard strike in the second overtime for the win to send the Yellow Jackets to a 3-0 start. Aaron Channing threw 5 touchdown passes in the loss for Geneva, who has not won a road game in two years.

Week 3 of the district college football slate starts conference play in the Presidents Athletic Conference. Crossover play continues in the PSAC while the NEC takes another week of non-conference action.  Here are previews of ALL the games, including two heard here on the Network.  Carnegie Mellon (0-1) at W & J (2-0)   1:30pm on WJPA 1450-AM and the MSA Sports Network The Tartans were blanked 30-0 by Case Western Reserve in Cleveland on opening night and the PAC opener. The CMU defense allowed 498 yards while the offense only managed 188 yards.

Week 2 of the local college football slate saw a fall weather pattern hit the area, even though it's still summer for another week or two. W & J traveled to New Wilmington where the Presidents have dominated that series in years past and Geneva looked to start their home slate strong with a win.  Here are recaps of ALL the games, including two that were heard on the Network:  W & J 56 – Westminster 21 Playing under the lights at Burry Stadium has not been a good thing for the Titans this season, suffering their second straight loss. W & J claimed their 14th straight win over Westminster and leads the all-time series 34-2.

District College Football Preview for Saturday, September 13th

Week 2 of the district college football scene has some good games and some strange happenings this weekend and it's not even close to Halloween.  The PSAC begins it's first week of crossover play with East meeting West but after a May vote of the PSAC board, these games all count in the conference standings, so it is possible that a game in September could determine the representatives in the State Title Game in November.  In the PAC, there are four meetings between PAC members this weekend, but due to the conference now having 14 teams and playing an unbalanced schedule, these games do not count towards the conference title.

WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week Two 2014

1. Pine-Richland 28, North Allegheny 24 (OT) Possibly the top-billed game of week two produced the top play of week two as well. After battling back and forth for 48 minutes, Northern Eight Conference powers Pine-Richland and North Allegheny went to overtime, tied 21-21. After the Tigers had to settle for a field goal, Pine-Richland would get their shot at the win. That’s when Rams Quarterback Ben DiNucci would take over.

As the weather changed yesterday afternoon and evening, it felt more like football weather. The local college football season kicked off some good matchups and a couple of come back wins for the area teams.  Here are recaps of ALL the games, including three heard here on the Network:  Slippery Rock 37 – Kutztown 26 It was not a good start for the Rock at Thompson-Mihalik Stadium, SRU fell behind 20-0 but the Rock rallied for 37 unanswered points and the opening night win. Shamar Greene ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Former North Allegheny Hockey Coach Named PIHL Commissioner

If there is one word to describe the objective of Jim Black, it would be “competition.” Black, a fixture in Western Pennsylvania hockey, has been hired as the new Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League, replacing Ed Sam, who held the position since 1999. An eight-year Coach of North Allegheny, Black won PIHL Penguins Cup Championships in 2007 and 2013. In both seasons, the Tigers won the Pennsylvania Cup as well. Additionally, Black won a PIHL Penguins Cup and Pennsylvania Cup in 2006 at Pine-Richland. Black will focus on making the PIHL a more competitive, transparent and noteworthy league. Already, he has helped contribute to the realignment of the entire League, forming two divisions at the Varsity Level and two tiers of Class A.
