Lower Merion Ends Chester’s Reign As PIAA Quad-A Champs

The weekend ended in Hershey as the PIAA Basketball Championships came to a conclusion with an exciting Quad A Boys title game. The move back to Chocolate Town was a success at the box office as 24,582 attended this year's eight title games, up almost 10 thousand from last year's championships at the Bryce Jordan Center.Here is a recap of the Lower Merion victory:Lower Merion Aces 63 - Chester Clippers 47The Aces ended the two year reign of the Clippers with the victory in the PIAA Boys Quad-A championship at GIANT Center on Saturday night. The Aces have now won seven state titles, it’s the first since 2006. Syracuse recruit B.J. Johnson led all scorers with 22 points and snagged 11 rebounds to lead the Aces.

South Park Wins First PIAA Girls Basketball Gold

The South Park Eagles controlled the game from the start in taking home their first PIAA Class AAA Girls Basketball championship with a 53-38 victory over the Bethlehem Catholic Golden Hawks. Senior Shelby Lindsay closed out her career with a 20 point performance, besting her season average of 18 points per game.The Eagles closed the first quarter with an 8-0 run, helped by threes from Lindsay and Halie Torris. South Park extended the lead to 14 as Lindsay exploded with 9 points in the quarter. South Park did it defensively as well in the opening half, forcing 9 turnovers and held Bethlehem Catholic to 7 of 27 from the field.

Beaver Falls Golden In Hershey With Victory in Class AA Boys Title Game
Very rarely does a player get a second chance to ice a game but that’s what Drew Cook got for Beaver Falls this afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey. Cook missed two free throws in the final minute, but a Zachery Miller offensive rebound, set Cook up for that second chance. He buried both free throws, cinching a 69-63 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders in the PIAA Boys AA Championship Game. The win was the 18th straight for Beaver Falls, who finished at 28-3 overall.

Tri-Valley Knocks Off Vincentian Academy in PIAA Girls A Title Tilt
It was not to be for the Vincentian Academy Royals as the two time WPIAL champions fell to the Tri-Valley Bulldogs 59-42 at the GIANT Center in Hershey in the PIAA Class A Girls Basketball title game. Jili Weber and Tara Nahodil each scored 19 points as the District 11 champions claimed their first PIAA title.Tri-Valley pulled away in the second half, using a 12-0 run to end the third quarter, Vincentian Academy trailed by two points at 33-31 but did not score again in the frame. Nahodil scored 10 points in the quarter, she matched her season average of 18.5 points per game.

Mars And Quaker Valley To Meet Again For Class A Penguins Cup Title

It's a rematch for the Class A Penguins Cup championship next Wednesday at Consol Energy Center as the defending champion Quaker Valley Quakers and Mars Planets both punched their tickets on Monday night.Mars defeated Westmont Hilltop 4-1 in the opening game and Quaker Valley won by the same 4-1 score over Kittanning in the nightcap. Vincentian Girls too Wise for Serra in Girls Class A Basketball Championship
March 2, 2013
Vincentian girls basketball star Brenna Wise played in last year's WPIAL Class A Championship at 50% with an ankle injury. This year, she was 100%, and that was bad news for Serra Catholic.Wise scored 18 points, grabbed 21 rebounds and blocked 4 shots, leading the Royals to their second Championship in as many years, defeating Serra 53-46 on Saturday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Vincentian the New Royalty of Boys Class A Basketball
The Vincentian Academy Royals pulled away in the third quarter to claim their second WPIAL Class A Boys Basketball Championship with a 86-74 victory over the Clairton Bears on Friday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The Royals are now 25-1 on the season and have won 14 straight since falling to District 6 top seed Bishop Carroll on January 12th.It was a balanced attack for the Royals. Five players ended in double figures with Junior Jim Kenna leading the way with 24 points and nine rebounds. Tony DiNardo added 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists.  Ryan Wolf scored 14, Jay Cortese came off the bench to score 11 and Kevin Fischer scored 10.

Bishop Canevin Pulls Stunner to Win Girls AA Basketball Championship

There is a new champion in Girls AA basketball. The Bishop Canevin Crusaders (22-4) started championship weekend in grand fashion, defeating top-seeded Seton LaSalle 56-47 and winning their first championship in school history Seton LaSalle (24-2) came into the game with a 66 game winning streak over WPIAL competition and an 8 game winning streak over the Crusaders. Bishop Canevin jumped out to an early 18-8 lead thanks to three 3 pointers from Johnie Olkosky.  The Crusaders defense also caused problems, forcing 8 first half turnovers.

WPIAL Basketball Playoff Recaps From Saturday, February 23rd

Quarterfinals Saturday in the WPIAL Basketball Playoffs was a little wild, a tad crazy and a bit one-sided as well. Boys Class AAAA made history with all four Section 3 teams winning to make it to the Semifinals while in Boys AA, Burrell, Quaker Valley and Apollo-Ridge won to eliminate seeds 2, 3 and 4. They rank the top four, then the next eight and start filing in the blanks from there which is not an easy task when you have upwards of 26 playoff teams.When putting this together, we looked at every team to discover quality wins. IUP Falls Short in NCAA D-II Quarterfinals

Ricky Rozier scored from one yard out with 3:51 remaining to play to give the Winston Salem State Rams a berth in the NCAA Division II semfinals with a 21-17 victory over IUP on Saturday in North Carolina. The number 2 ranked Rams entered the playoffs as the number one seed in Super Region One, Winston Salem is now 13-0 overall.

Here is a preview of their matchup this week for the regional title:The IUP Crimson Hawks(12-1) meet the Winston Salem Rams(12-0) for a noon kickoff in the NCAA Division II/Super Region One final, with a berth in the national semifinals on the line.IUP closed the regular season ranked 11th in the AFCA D-II coaches poll.
