While the WPIAL came up empty in sending a team to the state finals for only the second time PIAA girls volleyball history, it turned out to be a golden postseason for neighboring teams from District 9 and District 10. Clarion from D-9 won the Class A state championship Saturday while Fort LeBoeuf from D-10 captured the Class AA crown. The Highway to Heinz continues toward the second exit this week here on the MSA Sports Network. We have ALL 16 WPIAL Quarterfinals football playoff games starting with the MSA Sports Pregame Show and concluding with the one and only MSA Sports/WPIAL High School Football Scoreboard Show. We also have five District 6 high school football playoff games concluding with the D-6 Scoreboard Show, plus we have college football, PIAA Girls Volleyball state playoff action, men's and women's college basketball, the debut of PIHL high school hockey, the Second Chance at Life Charity Hockey Game and This Week in the WPIAL all this week here at MSAsports.netMonday, November 5th:Mt. Two schools celebrated first time girls volleyball championships while another won a sixth crown out of the #5-seed. Mount Lebanon captured the Class AAA title, their second in four years, out of the fifth-seed. The Blue Devils also won district gold in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2007 and 2009. Meanwhile, special first-time champions were crowned in Class AA as Mars knocked off defending champion Hopewell, and in Class A as Greensburg Central Catholic went from wire to wire at #1. In AAA Volleyball there were 8 teams who legitimately thought they could get to the championship game. The number three seeded Fox Chapel Foxes and the fourth seeded Mount Lebanon Blue Devils fought their way through the field to get there. In the end Mount Lebanon would win their schools 6th Girls Volleyball Title 21-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-20.The Blue Devils still have a ways to go to catch up to the leaders in girls volleyball titles. Farrell leads with 20, Norwin is second with 15, and Baldwin third with 9. Mount Lebanon has now won three of the last 6 titles in Girls AAA. The Mars Planets girls volleyball team came into the championship tournament as the number three seed, they left as the champion after defeating the the Hopewell Vikings 25-22, 25-18, and 25-17.
