LEWISBURG — Jacob Hauser was right on the cusp of medal contention after the first round and semifinals Thursday afternoon at the PIAA Class 2A boys diving championships at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium.

The Derry senior was 1.20 points away from eighth place after the first five dives. He trailed eighth by just four points after the next three dives.

But heading to the finals, Hauser had confidence that he could do what needed to be done to tick up at least one spot and find himself on the medals podium in his final state meet.

He scored 108.70 points over his three dives in the finals, and it was good enough to move him up one spot to eighth.

“I was just happy I knew what my last three dives were, and I was able to nail a couple of them,” said Hauser, who captured Derry’s first WPIAL diving championship Feb. 20 at North Allegheny.

“I just wanted to go into them and have fun, execute them the way I knew I could. They were the last dives of my senior year. I wanted to leave on a high note.”

Hauser knew what it felt like to stand on the medals podium as he placed fifth last year as a junior.

He took 12th as a sophomore and 13th as a freshman.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be able to compete at states all four years and win two medals,” Hauser said.

“It’s been so much fun to come here and represent the WPIAL.”

Hauser was one of four WPIAL swimmers to make the cut to 16 for the finals.

Indiana senior Matthew Blystone moved up from 19th last year to 11th overall Thursday. He, too, was on the edge of medal contention throughout the competition.

He finished with 299.05 points.

Beaver junior Isaac Burtt finished 13th (279.05) in his debut at the PIAA championships, while Indiana sophomore Connor Fleming, who also made his first appearance at states, placed 14th (258.65).
