District College Football Recap – 09/18/2011

Week 3 of the college football season saw a wild game in Loretto, the WVIAC, NCAC
and PAC open conference play and the final week of crossover play in the PSAC. Here
are recaps of all of the games, including three heard here on the Network:
West Chester 20 – Slippery Rock 13
The Rock offense, which scored over 50 points in each of the first two games of the
season was held down by the Rams defense as West Chester picked up their first win
of the season and dropped the Rock from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Slippery Rock did not help their cause, turning the ball over three times and
committing 11 penalties for 101 yards in the contest. The Rock actually led 6-0,
scoring on the opening drive of the game with Akeem Satterfield going in from a yard
out. That lead lasted all of 21 seconds as Sean McCartney hit Rondell White for a 65
yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage for the Rams and a 7-6 lead.
The Rock had a chance to take the lead on the first drive of the second quarter,
Kurt Brackman’s 46 yard field goal attempt was blocked by Mike Pereira. West Chester
took over at the Rock 31, but moved backwards, due to an offensive pass interference
call and was forced to punt. Shawn Leo hit a 22 yard field goal on the Rams’ next
possession, making the score 10-6 with 2:49 remaining. West Chester was not done,
they forced SRU to punt from deep in their own territory and Jackson Fagen returned
the punt 49 yards for a touchdown and a 17-6 halftime lead.
Slippery Rock turned the ball over on it’s first possession of the third quarter, U.
Conn transfer Cody Endres threw his first of three interceptions on the day, giving
West Chester the ball at the Rock 33, but the Rams turned the ball over on downs.
The next Rock drive ended in the same way, Endres was intercepted the Ram 35 by John
O’Donnell. Leo tacked on a 36 yard field goal with 3:06 remaining for a 20-6 lead.
SRU scored on the first play of the fourth quarter on a drive that was all Jimmy
Zubik, the running back carried 6 times and caught a 12 yard touchdown pass from
Endres to cut the lead to 20-13. Leo had a chance to make it a two-score game with
9:52 left in regulation, but he missed a 32 yard field goal attempt, wide to the
left. On the following possession, Slippery Rock drove to the WCU 41 but was forced
to punt, the Rock got the ball back with 2:37 remaining at their own 37, but Endres
was intercepted again by O’Donnell with 50 seconds left to seal the win.
The Rock running game was held to just 53 yards, Endres was 29 of 47 for 242 yards,
along with the 3 picks, he was sacked 4 times. Devin Goda had 11 catches for 103
yards. SRU is now 2-1 overall. The Slippery Rock defense did a great job in the stat
battle, holding West Chester to just 221 yards, but could not force a turnover.
Thomas More 41 – Geneva 7
It was the Domonique Hayden show at Bank of Kentucky Field as the sophomore running
back rushed for 4 touchdowns as the 9th ranked Saints opened PAC play against the
Golden Tornadoes on Saturday.
The three-time conference champions got on the board first, with a big play as
Kendall Owens returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Thomas More lead.
The Saints had a chance to add to the lead late in the quarter but Aaron Walter
missed a 35 yard field goal.
Hayden racked up his first score on a 9 play, 75 yard drive, going in from 15 yards
out and a 14-0 second quarter lead. Shaquille Jenks intercepted a Zack Hayward pass,
setting up a Robert Kues 7 yard td pass to Hayden, making the score 21-0. The GT’s
turned the ball over again, Hayward hit Rocco Colavecchia with a pass, but he was
stripped of the football, Thomas More recovered at the Geneva 37 and Hayden scored
from 4 out on the sixth play of the drive and the rout was on.
The Saints had the ball to start the third and scored on their first possession.
Hayden scored on a 21 yard run. Landon Savoy scored in the fourth quarter for the
Saints on a 23 yard run, Jordan Curry went in from a yard out for the only Geneva
touchdown with 1:19 remaining.
Hayden carried 9 times for 65 yards and 3 scores, he had 6 catches for 85 yards and
a touchdown. Kues was 20 of 27 for 242 yards. Owens had 7 catches for 75 yards to go
with his punt return. The Saints are now 2-0 overall, setting up a matchup next week
at W & J.
Geneva struggled on offense, falling to 0-3 and dropping their first ever PAC game.
Hayward was 20 of 33 for 146 yards and 2 interceptions. Colavecchia caught 10 passes
for 73 yards.
W & J 31 – Bethany 14
The Presidents used a strong third quarter to pick up the win in the PAC opener.
Matt Bliss ran for a score and threw for two more in the victory at Bison Stadium, W
& J has now defeated Bethany 29 consecutive times.
Bethany took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Jamaan Webb picked off a Bliss pass,
giving the Bison the ball at their own 25. Bethany marched 75 yards in 10 plays with
Eric Walker scoring on a 2 yard run. DeAndre Simmons got W & J on the board, tying
the game with a 1 yard run.
Bethany had a chance for a score early in the second, but Matt Grimard fumbled on
second and goal from the one, Erik Espe recovered for W & J. Grimard was picked off
with 3:44 remaining, Mitch Rose returned the pick to the Bethany 15. Ben Hoffer ran
for 9 yards then Bliss scored from the 6 to put W & J up for good.
W & J added to the lead in the third, Bliss to Hunter Creel for 13 yards early in
the quarter. Grimard answered with a 49 yard touchdown pass to J Foster to cut the
lead to 21-14. An Eric Eberle 27 yard field goal and a Bliss connection to Alex
Baroffio for 10 yards and a score in the final minute of the quarter, closed out the
scoring.
Bliss was 18 of 29 for 246 yards, he was picked once and sacked five times. Baroffio
caught 5 passes for 100 yards, Adam Dominick had 5 catches for 85 yards, Simmons ran
for 96 yards on 14 carries. W & J is now 2-1.
Walker rushed for 112 yards on 17 carries for the Bison, Bethany is now 1-1.
Duquesne 49 – Valparaiso 14
The Dukes handed the Crusaders their 23 consecutive loss on the Bluff on Saturday.
Sean Patterson threw for 3 touchdowns and ran for another. Duquesne had 2 100 yard
rushers on the day, Larry McCoy carried 21 times for 164 yards and a score. Bill
Bair ran 16 times for 154 yards, the Dukes put up 425 yards rushing, leading to 628
total yards. Connor Dixon caught a 66 yard touchdown pass from Patterson in the
first quarter. Dixon now has at least one reception in 18 consecutive games.
Duquesne is now 2-1. Valparaiso is 0-3. Nick Malatis threw for 105 yards and 2
fourth quarter touchdowns for the Crusaders.
St. Francis 50 – Morehead State 49
The Red Flash rallied from an 18 point deficit to start the fourth quarter to claim
the win in Loretto on Saturday afternoon. Kyle Harbridge ran for 348 yards and a
school record, he scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:28 remaining. Harbridge
scored five times in the game, his rushing total is the highest single game total in
any level of NCAA football this season.
John Kelly threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another for the Red Flash, now 1-2 on
the season. Anthony Howzie had 7 catches for 107 yards.
For Morehead State, Desmond Cox carried 27 times for 129 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Zach Lewis threw for 312 yards and 2 touchdowns, Boone Goldsmith threw for 194 yards
and a score, but he was picked off 3 times. Donte Sawyer had 5 catches for 183 yards
and 2 scores, Kevin Thomas had 104 yards on 5 catches and a touchdown. The Eagles
are now 1-2. The teams combined for 1,309 yards of offense and 52 first downs, St.
Francis led 658-651.
Morgan State 13 – Robert Morris 12
The Colonials scored with 1:57 left in regulation, thinking they had forced
overtime, but Greg Langer missed the extra point and the Bears were able to run out
the clock and pick up the win in Baltimore.
Robert Morris led 6-3 at the half on two Langer field goals of 37 and 41 yards.
Abraham Mercado kicked a 40 yard field goal in the second for the Bears only points
of the half.
Morgan State scored their only touchdown early in the third quarter on a Robert
Council 56 yard pass to Tyrone Hendrix. A Mercado 23 yard field goal with 11:56 left
gave the Eagles a 13-7 lead. Jeff Sinclair hit Rickeem Jackson for a 8 yard
touchdown, setting up the missing Langer PAT.
Sinclair struggled again for RMU, going 15 of 29 for 166 yards and 2 interceptions.
Justin Brooks carried 16 times for 68 yards for the Colonials, now 0-3. Travis
Davidson carried 23 times for 87 yards for the Eagles, now 1-2.
Youngstown State 34 – Illinois State 27
Kurt Hess threw 4 touchdown passes and scored on a yard run to lead the Penguins to
a 2-1 overall record, and a win in the MVC opener at the Ice Castle. Hess was 21
of 29 for 293 yards, he has thrown only one pick in the first three games. Andre
Barboza had 3 catches for 74 yards, including 2 touchdowns. Jaimaine Cook carried 30
times for 122 yards for the Penguins.
Matt Brown threw for 3 touchdowns for the Redbirds, Ashton Leggett ran 26 times for
125 yards and a score for Illinois State, now 1-2.
California 22 – East Stroudsburg 19
Peter Lalich threw for 384 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a late scoring drive as
the 21st ranked Vulcans pulled out the road win in a PSAC crossover game.
Lalich opened the scoring on the first drive of the game on a 5 yard run and a 7-0
lead. John Schubert kicked a 37 yard field goal midway thru the second quarter to
cut into the Cal lead, but the Vulcans answered with a Lalich 22 yard pass to Josh
Gumbert for a 14-3 halftime advantage.
East Stroudsburg racked up 16 points in the third quarter, Ray Wagner found Dusty
Reed for a 4 yard touchdown, Schubert added a 35 yard field goal and Darius Jackson
scored on a yard run to put the Warriors up 19-14.
Lalich connected with Thomas Mayo for a 75 yard touchdown with 3:12 remaining, the
pair connected on the two-pointer to put the Vulcans up 3. Cal had a chance to ice
the game when Darnell Harding picked off a Wagner pass and returned it to the ESU 4,
but Cal turned the ball over on downs at the 1 yard line, with 38 seconds left. ESU
was not able to pick up a big gainer and ended the game deep in their own territory. Lalich was 29 of 45 for 384, Mayo had 12 catches for 201 yards. Lamont Smith ran for
107 yards on 24 carries. Cal is now 2-1.
Wagner was 24 of 45 for 263 yards, he was picked off 3 times. Reed had 7 catches for
106 yards. ESU is now 1-2.
Edinboro 41 – Cheyney 13
The Fighting Scots led 31-13 at the half and cruised to the win at Sox Harrison
Stadium in PSAC crossover action. Brian Davis ran for 101 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Cody Harris was strong again, going 21 of 26 for 163 yards and a score. The Edinboro
defense allowed just 116 yards, the Fighting Scots are 3-0.
Chris Anderson threw a 25 yard touchdown pass to Prince Stewart and Justin Watkins
scored on a 7 yard run for Cheyney, now 1-2.
Shippensburg 54 – Clarion 24
The Golden Eagles led 7-3 after the first quarter and 14-10 in the second but the
Red Raiders put up 21 in the second and 20 in the third for the crossover win at
Seth Grove Stadium. Zach Zulli and Mike Frenette each scored 2 touchdowns and James
Brennan ran an interception back 31 yards for a Pick 6.
Frenette ran 17 times for 106 yards and had 7 catches for 58 yards. Zulli carried 11
times for 61 yards, he threw for 207 yards on 20 of 28. Shippensburg is now 2-1.
Brandon Akins ran for 101 yards on 11 carries and 2 scores for Clarion. Patrick
Graham-Murphy returned a kickoff 62 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and
the short-lived 14-10 lead. The Golden Eagles are 0-3.
Gannon 47 – Millersville 0
The Golden Knights led 30-0 at the half, helped greatly by a Justin Caliste hat
trick of touchdowns in the second quarter. Gannon led 9-0 on an Alex Papson 4 yard
run in the first and a safety in the second when Caliste went to work. Caliste
returned the free kick following the safety for a 66 yard touchdown, Tavone Bailey
intercepted a pass on the first Miners’ play following the touchdown. On the next
play, Caliste took a reverse 70 yards for a score and added an 85 yard punt return
for a touchdown.
Caliste, a true freshman, ended up with 222 all-purpose yards for the day. Papson
ran for 48 yards on 16 carries. The Gannon defense held Millersville to just 103
yards. Both teams are now 1-2 overall.
Mercyhurst 34 – C.W. Post 7
Trevor Kennedy set a career high with 206 receiving yards as the Lakers picked up a
crossover win at Tullio Field. Former Shenango standout Ricky Matthews put
Mercyhurst up early 14-0 on touchdown runs of 1 and 6 yards, his first 2 of his NCAA
career. Then Travis Rearick and Kennedy took over, finding Kennedy for touchdowns of
39 and 3 yards in the second half.
Rearick went 24 of 35 for 372 yards, Matthews carried 14 times for 54 yards. The
Lakers are now 2-1. Anthony Brunetti scored on a 5 yard run for the Pioneers, who
fall to 0-3.
Kutztown 49 – Lock Haven 6
The 16th ranked Golden Bears had 538 yards of offense and handed the Bald Eagles
their 34th straight loss. Curtis Wortham ran for 100 yards on 14 carries, Robbie
Frey ran for 71 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kevin Morton threw for 280 yards and 2
scores, he also ran for a touchdown. Kutztown is 3-0.
For Lock Haven, Brandon Brader ran for 100 yards for the second straight win,
getting 109 yards on 23 carries, but the Bald Eagles could only manage 2 Noah Heimer
field goals.
Shepherd 64 – Seton Hill 7
The 7th ranked and 3-0 Rams held the Griffins to just 84 yards of offense, while
gaining 542 yards of their own in WVIAC opener for both teams. Bobby Cooper threw
for 238 yards and two scores, one to Robert Byrd, the other to Larry Lowe. Tommy
Addison ran for 122 yards, Kenny Williams ran for 118 yards and a score. Kevin
Williams scored twice. Neal Hardie returned a blocked punt for a score, D.J. Scott
took a punt return 36 yards for a touchdown.
For Seton Hill, Jonathan Feagin returned a kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown. The
Griffins are 0-3.
Waynesburg 46 – Thiel 7
The Yellow Jackets rolled to 2-0 with the win at Wiley Stadium on Saturday. Josh
Graham threw for 3 touchdowns in the PAC opener for both teams. Tyler Fatigante
scored twice on his only two carries of the game, a 6 yard run in the first quarter
and a 65 yard run in the fourth. The Waynesburg defense forced 4 turnovers on the
afternoon and held Thiel to both 73 yards rushing and passing.
De’Von Drish scored on a 3 yard run in the fourth quarter for the Tomcats, now 0-3.
Westminster 25 – Grove City 20
The Titans held on for the win at Robert E. Thorn Field on Saturday night in the PAC
opener for both teams.
With starting quarterback Shawn Lehocky out, the Titans turned to the combination of
Zach Hoffman and Tommy Turnbull to get the job done. Westminster scored on their
opening drive, going 9 plays and 76 yards, with Hoffman tossed a 12 yard pass to
Gino Pasquinelli for the score. Jimmy Bailey evened the score with an 88 yard punt
return with 2:06 left in the first.
Turnbull took over at quarterback, he connected with Pasquinelli for a 40 yard score
on the second play of the second quarter, the extra point was no good. Ed Reith
answered for Grove City with a 30 yard touchdown run, but Grove City also missed the
point-after, leaving the game tied at 13. Westmister recovered an on-side kick
attempt, with the short field, the Titans got a 34 yard field goal from Zack Henry
to take the lead. Henry added a 21 yarder on the final play of the half and the
Titans took a 19-13 lead to the dressing room.
Westminster was able to take advantage of a short field again, Kyle Allen picked off
a Clayton Hall pass and Hoffman scored from 2 out to put Westminster up 25-13, but
the Titans could not get the two-pointer for the 14 point lead.
Early in the fourth quarter, it was Grove City’s turn to have a short field, Joe
Diani intercepted a Hoffman pass and set up the Wolverines at the Titan 13. On the
next play, Hall ran in from 13 yards to cut the lead to 5. The Wolverines went three
and out on their next two possessions and the Titans were able to run clock, taking
it down to 1:19 for the final possession.
Grove City took over at their own 21. Hall was injured on a run, Brian Pell had to
come in at quarterback and moved the Wolverines to the Westminster 44 with 11
seconds left, but Grove City could get no closer.
The Westminster quarterbacks combined for 218 yards, Hoffman threw for 124.
Pasquinelli had 7 catches for 85 yards, Collin Wallace added 5 catches for 81.
Westminster is now 2-1.
For Grove City, Hall threw for only 34 yards, he ran for 49, the Wolverines are now
0-3.
Allegheny 17 – DePauw 10
Colin Hartford picked off two passes and ran one back for a touchdown as the Gators
defense allowed just 62 yards offense in the second half and picked up the win in
the NCAC opener.
DePauw jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead, but Allegheny came back on
Hartford’s 34 yard pick 6, early in the second quarter. Ryan Zipf kicked a 35 yard
field goal in the third to tie the game and Jordon Fowler hit Matt Griffith in the
fourth for the go-ahead score.
Catholic University 29 – Carnegie Mellon 28
Kevin Donohue’s 28 yard field goal attempt went wide right and denied the Tartans a
victory Friday night in Washington, DC. Jake Nardone ran for 83 yards and 2 scored
for CMU. Patrick Blanks added a touchdown and Sam Thompson returned an interception
71 yards for a score. The Tartans are now 0-3.
Greg Cordivari threw 2 touchdown passes for the Cardinals, the second to Jeff
Fruciante from 6 yards out, came with just 2:41 remaining. Catholic University is
now 3-0.
A Thursday night affair kicked off Week 3 of the college football slate, with an nationally ranked team coming to Indiana County. Here is the game recap:
Bloomsburg 20 IUP 16
Week 3 of the college football season opened at George P. Miller Stadium in front of a nationally televised audience and they saw a good one as the 8th ranked Huskies knocked off the home team with a career high performance from wide receiver Kyle Fisher.
Fisher made 5 catches for 141 yards, including a touchdown late in the third quarter that put Bloomsburg up 20-10.
IUP took the opening kickoff and went 71 yards before the drive stalled out, Brett Ullman kicked a 26 yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Bloomsburg answered with a 23 yard field goal by Dan Fisher to knot the game. That lasted all of twelve seconds as Jerrell McFadden took the ensuing kickoff back 90 yards for a 10-3 IUP lead.
Bloomsburg tied the game on the Huskies’ first drive of the second quarter, Pat Carey hooked up with Fisher for 55 yards, then connected with Ryan Dickerson for 42 yards and a 10-3 lead. Ullman missed a 47 yarder with 2:16 left in the half, the teams traded interceptions before Bloomsburg ran out the opening half clock.
The Huskies took the lead on the second drive of the third quarter, Fisher kicked a 27 yard field goal for a 13-10 lead. Bloomsburg added to the lead on the next possession, Carey hit Fisher for 45 yards, then for the 7 yard scoring strike and a 20-10 lead.
IUP answered back, using a 14 play 85 yard drive that took up 5:51. James Johnson scored from 1 yard out to cut the lead to 20-16, but the extra point was missed by Ullman with 12:16 remaining. IUP drove down again into Bloomsburg territory, Ullman attempted a 34 yard field goal but the snap was bad and Bloomsburg recovered. IUP would barely get into Bloomsburg territory on the final two drives and Bloomsburg ran out the clock.
For the Huskies, now 3-0, Carey was 9 of 18 for 235 with 2 touchdowns and an interception. All-American running back Franklyn Quiteh was held to just 43 yards on 15 carries. Bloomsburg managed just 10 first downs in the contest.
IUP falls to 1-1, quarterback Pat Smith was 19 of 38 for 169 yards with an interception, he was sacked 4 times. Harvie Tuck ran for 119 yards on 22 carries.
