The Aliquippa boys basketball team had travel troubles getting to Norwin High School for its PIAA Class 3A playoff game Tuesday.
That was the least of their problems.
They had trouble slowing down District 6 runner-up Forest Hills and its big man, 6-foot-6 junior forward Dylan Stohon, who scored 18 points in a 63-55 win.
Forest Hills (25-4) will face Trinity, which defeated Mohawk, in Saturday’s quarterfinals at a time and place to be determined.
Aliquippa coach Mrryce Smith said the bus was late, then there was an accident on the turnpike and the driver was given three sets of directions for how to make it to Norwin.
Forest Hills coach Dom Vescovi said bad weather delayed his team’s arrival. They got to Norwin at 5:15 p.m. for a 6 p.m. tip.
“When I found out they were going to be late, it allowed my team to relax,” Vescovi said.
Smith said he felt his team came out sluggish, which allowed Forest Hills to open up a 36-23 lead in the second quarter.
“The way the game began, them getting three offensive rebounds on their first possession and then draining a couple 3-pointers, I thought we might be in for a long night,” Vescovi said. “But Brandon Gregovich came off the bench in the first quarter and gave us a lift.”
Gregovich scored a quick six points and Koy McGough added eight points as Forest Hills took a 22-18 lead.
Aliquippa, relying on the 3-point shot, went cold as Forest Hills pushed the lead to double figures.
The no-quit Quips (20-7) staged a comeback in the third quarter and pulled to within 48-46 by making five 3-pointers, two each by Qa’lil Goode and Dejaun Hill.
“We played hard, but I think the comeback in the third quarter took something out of us,” Smith said. “This team has come a long way. No one expected us to be here.
“Forest Hills has a nice squad. They are much stronger this season.”
The Quips went cold again in the final quarter, and Forest Hills was able to stave off sloppiness to pull out the win.
McGough finished with 16 points for Forest Hills.
Goode led Aliquippa was 24 points and Anthony Ingram added 11.
