Matt Sieg and the Fort Cherry Rangers extended their WPIAL winning streak to 29 games in a 55-6 victory over the Monessen Greyhounds at Joe Garry Field.
Sieg made history, breaking Clairton’s Tyler Boyd and Lamont Wade’s shared record of 117 career touchdowns with a three-touchdown game. The clincher came on a 26-yard touchdown run.
“Getting in that end zone, that is something I’ll never forget,” Sieg said. “Just the guys around me, the coaches around me, since I was a freshman, this is something we’ve been working towards, and it’s just super special to be able to do it with these guys. I have so much love for the people I’m around here and the people that make me who I am.”
Sieg ran for 172 yards on 14 carries and ran his first touchdown from 53 yards out and his record-tying touchdown from 9 yards.
“You couldn’t pick someone more deserving,” coach Tanner Garry said. “The way he’s led up here for four years to have it capped off with that, I know he still has some other records that he’s trying to get too, but this is a great one to break. It couldn’t happen to a better kid.”
Sieg thinks it’s surreal to be in the same sentence as Boyd and Wade.
“That’s insane to me,” Sieg said. “Growing up around here, those are the legends you look up to, and it’s all the people talk about, so to be able to be on a list, and on top of that list, that is just insane to me.”
He was proud of his teammates, and he was happy to accomplish a monumental goal with them.
“The way they greeted me in the end zone, it was super special,” Sieg said. “The guys, they put in all the work too with the long hours in the summer and the offseason, lifting. In the season, there’s long days at school, and then we get out onto the practice field and put in the work.”
Sieg wasn’t the only one who got it rolling. The Rangers racked up 279 yards on the ground with Ryan Huey tallying two touchdowns on eight carries for 55 yards.
Zach Rodriguez found the end zone on a 2-yard run, along with Joey Barna on a 87-yard kick return.
“It’s just super fun to see everybody around me succeed,” Sieg said. “Kudos to the line. They blocked their butts off tonight and opened some big holes against a good, physical team. Seeing all the people around you scoring, it’s just a fun game to be playing in.”
The Greyhounds were held scoreless through their first three quarters. The Rangers held them to 112 total yards.
The Rangers were led by Archie Shattuck on defense as he recorded two sacks, a forced fumble and recovery. Gavin Grace also had a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown.
“Our defense really wanted to harp on physicality this week,” Garry said. “Monessen is a team that’s going to going to come out and play physical. We wanted to be able to match and exceed. They were willing to bring it. Our kids did a really good job. We told them that this is a team that’s going to be able to give you problems in the early going, and they did. But we pride ourselves on playing four quarters and being able to take it from there.”
The Rangers did just that.
The Greyhounds recovered a fumble on the first play of the game when Rodney Johnson fell on a muffed kick.
Fort Cherry’s Shattuck forced a fumble on a sack and got the recovery, giving it right back.
Sieg capitalized, taking one to the house for 53 yards.
Monessen held Fort Cherry in check for the entire first quarter, going into the second with a 7-0 Rangers lead.
With a little under eight minutes remaining in the second, Sieg set a WPIAL record with 118 total touchdowns, running one in from nine yards out to go up 14-0.
The Greyhounds’ chances began to fade when a snap went into the end zone and Fort Cherry’s Grace fell on it for a touchdown.
Rangers running back Huey extended the lead to 27-0 when he ran in a 27-yard touchdown.
Sieg made history in their next drive right before the end of the half with a 26-yard touchdown run.
Huey mustered a 4-yard score and on their next drive, Rodriguez punched one in from 2 yards out to go up 48-0.
Monessen tallied their first score in the fourth quarter on a Johnson four-yard touchdown to make it 48-6.
Fort Cherry’s Barna returned an electric 87-yard touchdown return to go up 55-6.
Sieg has had a lot of fun memories through the years, including playing against his cousin, Brodie Kuzior, who played QB at Burgettstown. However, he doesn’t have a favorite memory.
“This is definitely super special, but I’m just so thankful to be able to have so many memories like that playing in high school,” Sieg said. “I just love playing football with all my boys.”
Sieg and the Rangers take on rival Burgettstown next week.
“We’ll celebrate tonight and get back tomorrow,” Sieg said. “Watch some film and get ready for Burgettstown. It’s a rivalry game, so we always have that game circled. We will never take them lightly.”
