Fox Chapel Herald notebook: Fox Chapel boys earn 4th seed

The Fox Chapel boys basketball team was deemed one of the top four teams in the Class 6A field ahead of the WPIAL playoffs.

The WPIAL steering committee rewarded the Foxes for a 16-6 finish in the regular season by giving them the No. 4 seed and a home game in the quarterfinals.

The Foxes will host No. 5 Central Catholic (13-9) on Thursday (Feb. 20).

Upper St. Clair (20-2), New Castle (19-3) and Imani Christian Academy (13-7) earned the top three seeds in the 11-team field.

The Foxes, the 2022 WPIAL Class 6A champion, won four in a row down the stretch in section before falling to the No. 2 Red Hurricanes and No. 7 Butler to close out section play at 10-4.

Caden Kaiser (17 points per game) led Fox Chapel to a second-place finish in Section 1.

In the regular-season finale, a 63-61 win over Avonworth, Asher White had 15 points, followed by 12 points for John Rehak and 11 each for Isaac Moser and Grant Fenton.

• The Shady Side Academy boys were given the No. 9 seed in the Class 3A playoffs and were scheduled to play at No. 8 McGuffey in the first round Tuesday (Feb. 18).

The Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season 9-12 overall after placing third in Section 3 at 6-4.

They won five straight games entering the postseason, including a 71-57 nonsection win over Plum on Feb. 10.

Seamus Riordan had 29 points, and Ryan Frohlich and Cam Mallory each added 14 in the win.

Girls basketball

Fox Chapel’s girls basketball team garnered the No. 15 seed for the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs and was scheduled to play No. 2 Peters Township in the first round Friday, Feb. 14.

The Foxes (13-9 overall) finished 7-5 in Section 1, good for a tie for third place with Plum behind co-champs Shaler and Franklin Regional.

Fox Chapel lost three of final four games of the regular season, including a 63-41 loss at Avonworth on Feb. 10.

Boys wrestling

Fox Chapel closed out the team portion of the boys wrestling schedule with a 51-14 win over Mt. Lebanon on Feb. 7.

Luke Montgomery (114 pounds), Youssef Abdelsalam (133), Daniel Noel (139), Andrew Krasta (152), Jack Viti (189) and Joseph Geller (215) all had pins for the Foxes, who finished the regular season 11-4 overall and 3-1 in Section 5-3A.

The Foxes lost to North Allegheny, 37-27, in the first round of the WPIAL team playoffs.

Girls wrestling

Fox Chapel’s girls wrestling team took down Mt. Lebanon, 48-17, on senior night Feb. 7.

Emma Srodes (112 pounds), Lauren Bachman (136) and Andrea Wang (148) all had pins.

Atia DiGioia (100), Yaiza Ojanen (106), Yoqi Zhou (142), Elaine Huang (155) and Alana King-Bennett (190) won by forfeit.

The Foxes finished the regular season with a record of 7-4.

Gymnastics

Fox Chapel gymnasts took part in the WPIAL individual championships Feb. 8, at Moon.

In the advanced division, Clara Mah finished seventh in the all-around competition with a score of 35.850. She was fourth in floor (9.500), seventh in bars (8.900), 10th in vault (8.900) and 10th in beam (8.550).

In the intermediate I division, Riley Hourvitz was 23rd in vault (8.750), Madison Cook was 19th in floor (8.650) and 26th in vault (8.700), and Lilah Blyth took 31st in vault (8.500).
