Franklin Regional’s Brandon Smith claims WPIBL boys singles title

In his three previous trips to the WPIBL boys singles championships, Franklin Regional senior Brandon Smith bowled pretty well.

On Wednesday, he bowled great.

Smith averaged 242.8 in five games en route to claiming the championship at AMF Mt. Lebanon. In the final match, Smith defeated Serra Catholic’s Preston Smith, 236-167. In the semifinals, he beat Greensburg Central Catholic’s Michael Mullaney, 253-214.

Brandon Smith was the top scorer in qualifying with a 725 series that included a 278 game, the best of the day by any bowler. He finished 17th in qualifying as a sophomore and 16th as a junior.

In the other semifinal, Preston Smith defeated Blackhawk’s Michael Popovich, 228-217.

In the quarterfinals, Preston Smith topped Freeport’s Colin Cummings, 223-210, and Mullaney defeated Thomas Jefferson’s Dylan Roberts, 220-195.

Greensburg Salem’s Dylan Megliorino missed qualifying for the step-ladder finals by eight pins and Hempfield’s Josh Cayer was nine pins short.

Seventy-four bowlers qualified for the Western Pennsylvania Regional boys singles tournament March 1 at AMF Noble Manor.

The WPIBL girls singles championship is set for Thursday at AMF Mt. Lebanon.
