Punching a ticket to the WPIAL playoffs is never easy. For the Freeport Yellowjackets, they needed a win Friday at home against East Allegheny to position themselves for a spot.
In front of a healthy senior night home crowd at Freeport Area Athletic Stadium, the Yellowjackets allowed an early TD to the Wildcats but recovered before the first quarter ended and beat a motivated conference rival 49-19 to lock up a playoff spot in Class 3A.
It was not a good start for the Yellowjackets (7-2, 4-1 Allegheny 7), who allowed East Allegheny senior quarterback Cedrick Mack to run and pass his way quickly downfield on the game’s first drive and engineer a five-play, 80-yard scoring march that culminated on a 7-yard TD pass to senior receiver Damarjae Warren. A Tymere Coulverson extra point made it 7-0 Wildcats.
The teams traded punts before Freeport got things moving in the right direction under senior QB Drew Ross and finished with a 17-yard Amos Glenn scoring run.
EA (2-6, 2-3) responded by driving down field quickly, only to see Warren throw an interception in Freeport territory.
Ross hauled in the errant pass, and that set the Yellowjackets up for another scoring drive that ended in the early stages of the second quarter when Glenn tallied his 2nd rushing score of the game. This one came from 25 yards and gave Freeport a 14-7 lead.
Not showing signs of quitting, East Allegheny once again drove into Yellowjackets territory. But for the second straight series, Warren was picked off, this time by junior Danny King.
The Yellowjackets stung the Wildcats once again by turning the miscue into points. Glenn ripped off a 55-yard jaunt, setting up Ross to scamper 13 yards for a 21-7 lead with 7 minutes, 56 seconds to play in the second quarter.
Keeping with the theme of the evening, the Wildcats showed fight. Junior Ronte Lawrence took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a score. A bad snap cost the Wildcats, and the score stood 21-13.
After another East Allegheny drive stalled, the Yellowjackets kept their foot on the pedal toward the postseason with a long drive that ended with Glenn scoring from 2 yards to extend the lead to 28-13.
Mack kept slinging the rock on the next series. But he was picked off by Ross in Freeport territory. EA junior defensive back Tanner Loya intercepted Ross on the next play, however.
Both teams exchanged punts and headed to the locker room with Freeport in command. Glenn ran 16 times for 188 yards in the first half.
“We just played great as a team.“ said Glenn, who finished with 206 yards on 19 attempts. “We let up some big plays, but we fought back from our mistakes. We finished out the game strong. It was so important to clinch a playoff spot tonight. We handled our business at home.”
Glenn took the second-kickoff 73 yards for his fourth touchdown of the evening and a 35-13 lead. After forcing a punt, the Yellowjackets sealed things off with a Ross 14-yard touchdown run and a 42-13 lead.
East Allegheny turned the ball over on the kickoff, and it didn’t take long for senior Dawson Gaillot to run 24 yards, invoking the mercy rule at 49-13.
The Yellowjackets will take to the road next week to face conference powerhouse Imani Christian in the final game of the regular season for both. East Allegheny will host Fox Chapel.
