Gateway tops rival Franklin Regional for regional boys bowling title

Gateway turned in a dominant performance at the Western Pennsylvania Regional boys team tournament Saturday at AMF Noble Manor Lanes, finishing atop the field in qualifying and going undefeated in the step-ladder finals en route to the title.

The Gators faced neighborhood rival Franklin Regional in the finals and swept the best-of-three series, winning 198-171 and 168-139.

Gateway topped qualifying with a 3,945 total, followed by Plum (3,881), Greensburg Salem (3,833), Connellsville (3,790), Armstrong (3,643) and Franklin Regional (3,616).

In the quarterfinals, No. 6 Franklin Regional upended No. 3 Greensburg Salem in three games and No. 4 Connellsville took out No. 5 Armstrong, also in three games.

In the semifinals, Gateway swept Connellsville, and Franklin Regional swept Plum.

Greensburg Salem’s Dylan Megliorino (251) and Plum’s Cade Schimmer (247) had the high games of the day. Schimmer (684), Megliorino (657), Thomas Jefferson’s Dylan Roberts (630), Cranberry’s Sam Shaffer (627) and Blackhawk’s Jacob Fitzgerald (616) had the top five series.

The boys team state tournament is set for March 16 at Leisure Lanes in Lancaster.

The girls regional tournaments are next weekend at AMF Noble Manor Lanes.
