High school roundup for April 2, 2019: Arnold fans 18 as Vincentian blanks Serra Catholic

Elizabeth Arnold was on target from the pitching circle Tuesday afternoon.
The senior hurler struck out 18 batters and allowed just three hits to lead Vincentian Academy to a 3-0 win over No. 4 Serra Catholic (2-1, 2-1) in a Section 2-2A game.
She also was 2 for 2 at the plate. Riley Culleiton was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Hannah Calderaro added an RBI single for the Royals (3-0, 3-0).
Bethel Park 16, Mt. Lebanon 3 (6 inn.) — Gianna Sciullo was 4 for 5 with a home run and six RBIs as Bethel Park (4-0, 4-0) won in Section 1-6A.
Connellsville 10, Armstrong 0 (6 inn.) — Winning pitcher Mia Burd was 5 for 5 with a double and three RBIs to give Connellsville (2-2, 1-2) a Section 1-5A win.
Shaler 3, Gateway 2 (9 inn.) — Maizi Wohlgemuth smacked a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to lift Shaler (1-3, 1-2) to a Section 2-5A victory.
Montour 17, Western Beaver 2 (4 inn.) — Lindsey Penz was 3 for 4 with a double and home to help Montour (3-2, 3-0) win in Section 3-5A.
Quaker Valley 6, Blackhawk 5 — Reese Hamm knocked in two runs, and Maddie Hess was 3 for 3 with an RBI as Quaker Valley (1-1, 1-0) won in Section 3-4A.
Avonworth 9, Hopewell 4 — Leah Logan was 3 for 3 with five RBIs as No. 1 Avonworth (7-0, 1-0) won a Section 2-3A game.
Steel Valley 7, Brownsville 0 — Brooke Martin and Marissa Hoesch each went 2 for 3 with an RBI to help Steel Valley (1-3, 1-1) win in Section 3-3A.
Freedom 4, New Brighton 1 — In Section 4-2A, winning pitcher Madison Slowinski was 2 for 4, and Erica Gazdik knocked in two runs to help No. 5 Freedom (5-0, 3-0) earn a win. Slowinski tossed a three-hitter and struck out 10.
Mapletown 9, Avella 5 — Madi Blaker struck out 12 batters to help Mapletown (3-0, 1-0) win a Section 2-A game. Katerine Fox knocked in two runs for the Maples.
West Greene 18, California 0 (3 inn.) — Jersey Wise and Jade Renner each had 4 RBIs as No. 1 West Greene (2-3, 1-0) rolled to a Section 2-A win.
Mt. Pleasant 4, Indiana 3 (8 inn.) — Lexis Shawley’s walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning vaulted No. 1 Mt. Pleasant to a Section 1-4A win.
Shawley went 2 for 4 with a double. Haylie Brunson, Autumn and Sydney Kanuch also had two hits for the Vikings (3-0, 1-0).
Carolyn Alincic threw a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts to earn the win.
Hempfield 2, Fox Chapel 1 — Callie Sowers pitched a complete game with 14 strikeouts to lead No. 4 Hempfield (2-2, 2-1) to a Section 2-6A win. Mackenzie Borkovich pitched six innings and allowed two unearned runs for Fox Chapel (0-3, 0-3).
Norwin 4, Butler 0 — In Section 2-6A, Victoria Shimko had three doubles and two RBIs to power No. 5 Norwin (3-1, 2-1) to a victory. Carly Cook had two hits, Alexandra Dillner had an RBI triple and Sara Russell added two RBIs.
Franklin Regional 6, Laurel Highlands 1 — Mallory Hallock hit a two-run homer as part of a four-run fifth inning to lead Franklin Regional (4-2, 3-0) to a Section 1-5A victory. Angalee Beall threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts to earn the win.
Latrobe 3, Albert Gallatin 2 — In Section 1-5A, No. 2 ranked Latrobe held off visiting Albert Gallatin as sophomore Jordan Tallman tossed a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
Freshman Jenna Tallman doubled twice for the Wildcats (5-0, 3-0).
Maddie Flowers, who took the loss for the Colonials (1-3, 1-2), hit a solo home run in the sixth to make it 3-2.
Natalie Rodgers added an RBI single for Latrobe, which scored all three runs in the fourth inning, two via an error and a wild pitch.
Penn Trafford 14, Kiski Area 4 (5 inn.) — Emma Little had two singles, a grand slam and six RBIs to carry No. 3 Penn-Trafford (3-0, 3-0) to a Section 1-5A victory. Emma Armstrong was 3 for 4 with four RBIs for the Warriors. Courtney Moyer hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning for Kiski Area (0-3, 0-3).
Greensburg Salem 8, Uniontown 2 — Sydney Tressler was 3 for 4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs as Greensburg Salem (2-1, 1-0) rolled to a Section 1-4A win. Mattie White had a two-run triple for the Golden Lions.
Yough 1, Highlands 0 — Savannah Manns singled home Navaeh Chopp in the first inning, and the run held up as No. 2 Yough (3-2, 1-0) won a Section 1-4A game. Kierra Waywood allowed four hits and struck out 10 in the win. Bailey Beacom was 2 for 3, and Jaycee Haidze allowed four hits for Highlands (1-2, 0-1).
Thomas Jefferson 10, Belle Vernon 6 — Graci Fairman and Paige Truax had two RBIs each as No. 3 Thomas Jefferson (4-0, 2-0) won a Section 2-4A game. Ashley Joll has three hits and three RBIs for Belle Vernon (1-5, 1-2).
Derry 8, Valley 4 — Valley led 4-2 after the top of the sixth, but Allison Baum homered to spark a six-run bottom half that propelled Derry (1-2, 1-0) to a Section 1-3A victory. Kam Kelly and Sara Auckerman had a double apiece, and Gianna Copelli tripled for the Trojans. Aimee Johnson singled twice for the Vikings (0-3, 0-1).
Southmoreland 11, Waynesburg 7 — Winning pitcher Jess Matheny and Charity Henderson smacked two home runs each to help No. 3 Southmoreland (2-1, 2-1) win a Section 3-3A game. Lexi Klatt added three hits, including a home run, and Hannah Corvin had three singles. Faith Miller homered and doubled, and Tyson Martin had two hits for the Scotties.
Greensburg Central Catholic 14, Ellis School 1 (5 inn.) — Jaden Cox struck out 11 to guide Greensburg Central Catholic (1-2, 1-0) to a Section 3-A win.
Jeannette 17, Geibel 1 (4 inn.) — Alexie Shaw and Sydney Matijevic knocked in three runs each, and Faith Johnston tossed a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and also hit two doubles to help Jeannette (1-1, 1-1) win a Section 3-A game.
Ligonier Valley 10, Blairsville 0 (6 inn.) — Jane Garver threw a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts and also hit a solo home run as Ligonier Valley (5-0, 4-0) cruised to a District 6 Heritage Conference win. Courtney McKlveen had two hits and three RBIs in the win.
Knoch 10, Ambridge 9 — Bailey Rickenbrade’s two-run, two-out triple in the bottom of the seventh scored Sophia Brandon and Monica Gourley, lifting Knoch to a Section 3-4A win.
The Knights (3-0, 1-0) trailed 9-3 entering the bottom of the sixth but scored seven unanswered runs for the win. Knoch had six hits in the final inning, including doubles by Erin Luffy and Quinn Hughes. Brynnae Coe had three hits.
Haylee Holman and Kim Kuzma homered and doubled for Ambridge (2-1, 0-1), finishing with three hits apiece.
Apollo-Ridge 15, Shady Side Academy 11 — Kylee Wynn homered twice, including a grand slam in the fourth inning, as the Vikings rallied from a 9-1 deficit to defeat Section 2-2A opponent Shady Side Academy (0-1, 0-1). Mollie Charlton tripled, homered and knocked in three runs and Morgan Shupe singled, homered and added four RBIs to lead Apollo-Ridge (2-1, 2-1).
Riverview 17, Sto-Rox 0 (3 inn.) — Alyssa Cappa struck out eight on her way to a no-hitter, and Riverview scored 12 runs in the second inning to roll past Section 2-2A opponent Sto-Rox (0-2, 0-2). Cappa doubled, tripled and knocked in two runs, Allura Jendrasik added two RBIs and Katelyn Davis had four RBIs for Riverview (2-1, 1-1).
Leechburg 11, Northgate 1 (5 inn.)— Emma Ritchie knocked in three runs to help lead Class A No. 4 Leechburg past nonsection opponent Northgate (1-2). Ritchie also picked up the win from the circle for Leechburg (2-0), giving up four hits and striking six. Kristen knocked in two runs, and Sky Raypush singled three times for the Blue Devils.
Plum 13, Penn Hills 3 (5 inn.) — Jillian Durst homered, drove in two runs and scored three times to help Plum (3-0, 3-0) defeat Penn Hills (1-3, 1-2) in a Section 2-5A game. MacKenzie Lake had had a pair of RBIs for the Mustangs, who scored nine runs in third inning. Melanie Mienke had seven strikeouts over five innings to earn the win.
Deer Lakes 1, East Allegheny 0 — Marleen Meyer pitched a complete game two-hitter and struck out five to lead Deer Lakes (1-3, 1-0) to a Section 1-3A win at East Allegheny (0-2, 0-1). The Lancers’ lone run came in the first inning when Katrina Taliani walked, stole second and eventually scored on a Maura Cerra RBI groundout.
Baseball
Charleroi 9, Washington 3 — Justin Day was 3 for 4 with an RBI to help Charleroi (2-1, 1-0) win a Section 3-3A game.
OLSH 10, Burgettstown 0 (5 inn.) — Peter Fabiano, Christian Connor and Alex Barron combined for the third no-hitter in OLSH history as the Chargers (4-1) won a nonsection game. Jeff Zick was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Greensburg Salem 4, Southmoreland 0 — Matt Wicker struck out six batters in two innings and earned the victory as Greensburg Salem (3-0) won a nonsection game over Southmoreland. Brayden Merichko allowed three hits and had five strikeouts in four innings, and Jack Oberdorf closed out the win. Dajauhn Hertzog was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Wicker doubled in two runs.
Jeannette 12, Greensburg Central Catholic 10 — Zack Berginc was 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs to help Jeannette (2-1) top rival Greensburg Central Catholic (1-3) in a nonsection game.
Zander Malik had three RBIs, and winning pitcher Michael McCabe had two RBIs.
Dan Voelker knocked in two runs for the Centurions.
Penn-Trafford 13, Pine-Richland 2 — The Warriors (5-0) erupted for five runs in the fifth inning and added three in the sixth and four in the seventh en route to a nonsection win over Class 6A No. 5 Pine-Richland (3-3).
Ligonier Valley 11, Blairsville 1 (6 inn.) — John Caldwell threw a five-hitter with nine strikeouts to help Ligonier Valley (4-0, 4-0) win a District 6 Heritage Conference game. Ben Anderson had two hits and two RBIs, and Andrew Kuzemchak was 4 for 4 with an RBI for the Rams.
Knoch 10, North Hills 0 (5 inn.) — Guy DeLeonardis doubled and drove in two runs for Class 4A No. 2 Knoch (3-0) in a nonsection win at defending Class 5A champion North Hills (1-3). Isaac Love singled three times for the Knights and Ethan Sloane doubled.
Northgate 12, Springdale 8 — Brandon John singled three times for Springdale (0-3) in a nonsection loss to Northgate (1-3). Garrett Apuzzo and Issac Kern had a double each for the Dynamos.
Eden Christian Academy 7, St. Joseph 1 — Eden Christian (2-1) broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning as the Warriors rolled to a nonsection win over St. Joseph. Tyler Wood singled and doubled at the plate and picked up the loss from the hill for St. Joseph (1-2).
