High school roundup for April 2, 2024: Canon-McMillan boys volleyball outlasts Moon

Luke Bockius had 15 kills and 14 digs and Justin Peters recorded six kills and 16 assists to lead Canon-McMillan to a 3-2 victory over Moon in Section 1-3A boys volleyball Tuesday night.

Game scores were 20-25, 25-16, 17-25, 25-22, 15-9. Ben Kopec had eight kills and five digs and William O’Bryan dished out 17 assists with eight digs for the Big Macs (4-0, 1-0).

Charlie Basil led the Tigers with 22 kills. Aidan Boyd added 15 kills, Casey Sunday 13 and Josh Hatton 11.

Derry 3, Gateway 0 – Mason Beekman had 10 kills and Noah Berkhimer and Cam McNichol added six kills and 12 assists apiece to lead Derry (2-1, 1-0) to its first Section 2-2A win, 25-22, 25-18, and 25-19.

North Catholic 3, OLSH 1 – Drew Palmer had 20 kills and Lucas Gunther added 17 kills to power North Catholic to a Section 1-2A win. Game scores were 25-21, 16-25, 25-8, 25-16.

Norwin 3, Hempfield 1 — Norwin defeated Hempfield in a Section 3-3A match with a marathon fourth game. The Knights won 19-26, 25-18, 25-13, 42-40.

Penn-Trafford 3, Plum 0 – Bradley Heinbaugh and Keith Otto had 10 kills apiece and Drew Sherwin recorded 18 digs to lead Penn-Trafford to a Section 3-3A win. Game scores were 25-12, 25-17, 25-18.

Softball

Ellwood City 10, New Castle 8 – Sara Schwarz went 4 for 5 with three doubles and five RBIs to lead Ellwood City (5-0) to a nonsection win. Winning pitcher Amber McQuiston homered, Keira Rozanski doubled twice and Kaylee Palombi singled and doubled for the Wolverines. Aycealea Rose and Keara Mangieri singled and doubled and Jenalyn Nero drove in two runs for New Castle (1-1).

Girls lacrosse

Fox Chapel 19, North Hills 7 – Caroline Grimsley scored six goals and Sydney Schutzman added four goals to lead Fox Chapel (3-0) to a Section 2-3A win. Caroline Leland had three goals and Meg Delaney added two goals and three assists. Abigail Krogmann scored five goals for North Hills.
