High school roundup for April 30, 2018: Shaler shuts down Seneca Valley

Hunter Boyan's solo home run in the top of the fifth inning proved to be all the scoring he needed as Shaler earned a 1-0 win over Seneca Valley in a Section 1-6A baseball game Monday.

Boyan tossed a complete-game, scattering seven hits while striking out three and walking two for the Titans (6-8, 4-5), who snapped a four-game losing streak and moved into a tie for third place in Section 1.

Jon McCullough allowed six hits and struck out four for Seneca Valley (8-8, 3-6).

Hempfield 17, Penn Hills 2 (3 inn.) — Luke Hudson was 3 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs to help No. 2 Hempfield (12-5, 7-2) to a Section 2-6A victory. Tyler Dancu was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, and Nick DiAndreth and winning pitcher Tyler Wiederstein also knocked in two runs.

Norwin 7, Connellsville 6 — Logan Liebdzinski had three hits, and Tanner Mohofski had two doubles to help Norwin (6-5, 5-4) win a Section 2-6A game. Billy Kerston earned the victory.

Bethel Park 1, Mt. Lebanon 0 — Adam Malecki's RBI double in the sixth inning lifted No. 3 Bethel Park (11-3, 9-1) to a Section 3-6A win. Justin Meis tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts.

Canon-McMillan 1, Allderdice 0 — Brandon Kline's RBI single in the fifth gave Canon-McMillan (11-4, 8-2) a Section 3-6A victory. Zach Rohaley threw a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Fox Chapel 10, Kiski Area 9 — Jonathan Simon led off the fifth inning with a home run, and consecutive two-out, two-run doubles by Alex McRandal and Alex Miles helped the Foxes (7-6, 6-4) earn a Section 1-5A win and clinch a playoff berth.

Kiski Area scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run in scoring position with one out, but James Patterson made an over-the-shoulder catch in left field and Simon got a groundout to preserve the victory.

Ryne Wallace, Zach Morrill and Ryan Rametta doubled for Kiski Area (2-8, 2-7).

Mars 9, North Hills 0 — In Section 1-5A, Frank Craska and Matt Fuller each knocked in two runs, and Rowen Fletcher was 3 for 4 with a triple and RBI as Mars (8-5, 6-3) earned a win over No. 3 North Hills (13-3, 9-2). Will Bednar tossed a three-hitter.

West Allegheny 5, Montour 2 — Austin Hendrick homered and earned the win as No. 1 West Allegheny (10-0, 10-0) scored a Section 2-5A victory.

Franklin Regional 5, McKeesport 1 — Alex Frey came through with a pair of sacrifice flies to help Franklin Regional sweep McKeesport (3-10, 2-9) in a Section 3-5A game.

Mike Klingensmith threw a four-hitter and struck out six to earn the win for the Panthers (9-3, 7-2), who also defeated the Tigers, 8-4, on April 13.

Thomas Jefferson 7, Albert Gallatin 3 — Luke Warhola was 3 for 4 with two RBIs as Thomas Jefferson (5-11, 3-8) won in Section 3-5A.

Freeport 14, Yough 4 (5 inn.) — Backed by a 10-run third inning, Class 4A No. 2 Freeport cruised past Yough for a Section 1 win. Evan McCrea and Alex Ehalt recorded three hits apiece. McCrea, Matt Charlton and Coulton Stewart doubled and Ehalt tripled for the Yellowjackets (10-1, 10-1). Steve Manon was 3 for 3 for Yough (5-7, 5-6).

Greensburg Salem 9, Deer Lakes 8 — Matt Wicker doubled three times for the Golden Lions (7-5, 6-4) in a Section 1-4A victory. Deer Lakes (7-6, 4-5) led 7-2 after two innings, but Greensburg Salem scored six runs in the fifth to rally for the win. Andrew Rosenberg and Nick Demary had a pair of doubles each. Tyler Smith had three hits for Deer Lakes, including a homer, and drove in four runs.

Highlands 9, Derry 6 — Zac Kuniak tripled and drove in a run to help Highlands (3-9, 3-7) snap a six-game losing streak with a Section 1-4A win at Derry (3-12, 1-10). Jayden Yarris and Mike Magdinec had a double apiece for the Golden Rams. Anthony Oshie was 3 for 4 for Derry.

Valley 8, East Allegheny 0 — John Luke Bailey took a no-hitter into the seventh, losing it on a one-out infield single, as Valley blanked East Allegheny (0-7, 0-6) in Section 1-4A. Jake McNabb had three hits and three RBIs for the Vikings (9-5, 7-2), while Dan Antonacci doubled and drove in a pair.

Blackhawk 19, Central Valley 6 (5 inn.) — Jarrett Wright was 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs to help No. 1 Blackhawk (13-0, 11-0) win in Section 2-4A. Mike Turconi and Marco Borello added three RBIs.

South Fayette 14, Beaver 8 — Richie Dell hit a grand slam in the sixth inning as South Fayette (11-4, 9-2) won a Section 2-4A game. Tyler Bedillion and Nolan Lutz also homered for the Lions.

Michael Champ homered twice and Jacob Beck also hit a home run for Beaver (8-6, 4-6).

South Park 5, Ringgold 3 — Kevin Vaupel struck out eight batters over 6 13 innings to lead South Park (11-6, 6-5) to a Section 3-4A win over No. 4 Ringgold (10-2, 9-2).

Burrell 10, Shady Side Academy 6 — The No. 3 Bucs scored five times in the seventh to rally for a Section 1-3A victory. Tyler Mock and Nick Hwostow drew bases-loaded walks, and Zach Miller followed with a double for Burrell (7-1, 6-1). Tanner Spohn earned the victory, striking out five.

Riverside 8, Ellwood City 2 — Ethan Ziegler had three hits and an RBI as No. 1 Riverside (11-1, 10-0) won in Section 2-3A. Gunnar Boehm threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Waynesburg 4, Mt. Pleasant 1 — Kyle Blasco, Kyle Shriver, Tyler Switalski and Ryley Metheny all had doubles, and Waynesburg (5-3, 5-3) scored four times in the sixth inning to win in Section 3-3A. Pete Billey had a triple for the Vikings (7-4, 7-3).

Fort Cherry 14, Burgettstown 3 (6 inn.) — Shane Smith was 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as Fort Cherry (7-3, 7-3) won in Section 1-2A.

Leechburg 15, Springdale 2 (5 inn.) — The Blue Devils (4-8, 4-5) clinched their first WPIAL playoff berth since 2011 with a Section 1-A win over Springdale (0-11, 0-9). Nathan Shinko hit a two-run double, and Tyler Leech and Chris Slifer each drove in two runs.

Vincentian Academy 18, St. Joseph 3 (4 inn.) — Nate Christian belted his second grand slam of the season for Class A No. 1 Vincentian Academy (10-2, 7-1) in a Section 1 win. Jesse Walker hit a two-run homer for St. Joseph (2-8, 1-6).

Jeannette 15, Jefferson-Morgan 2 (6 inn.) — Tre Cunningham went 5 for 5 with two RBIs and also threw a three-hitter in leading No. 2 Jeannette (9-1, 7-1) to a Section 2-A win. Tyler Elliott and Derrick Miller each had three hits.

Monessen 15, Mapletown 0 (3 inn.) — In Section 2-A, Cory Fleming was 2 for 3 with a triple, home run and six RBIs to lead Monessen (7-5, 6-3) to victory. Nate Lynch tossed a one-hitter.

Ligonier Valley 6, Blairsville 5 — John Caldwell was 2 for 4 with an RBI as Ligonier Valley (8-4, 5-3) won a District 6 Heritage Conference game. He also earned the save in relief of winning pitcher Sully Schueltz.

Softball

Norwin 16, Allderdice 1 (3 inn.) — Shaelyn Gillham doubled and tripled and Carly Cook and Sara Russell both had triples as Norwin (6-3, 5-2) won in Section 2-6A. In the second game of a doubleheader, Alexandra Dillner had a triple, two home runs and six RBIs to lead the Knights to a 23-5 win.

Franklin Regional 1, Kiski Area 0 (9 inn.) — Angalee Beall threw a two-hit shutout to lead Franklin Regional (12-2, 10-0) to a Section 1-5A victory.

Greensburg Salem 8, Woodland Hills 1 — Winning pitcher Mattie White was 2 for 4 with a double and RBI, and Mya Berger had an RBI triple as Greensburg Salem (7-6, 6-4) won in Section 1-5A.

Gateway 7, Armstrong 1 — Emma Kennedy and Danielle Taylor homered as Gateway (5-6, 5-6) won in Section 1-5A.

Highlands 9, Derry 4 — Emily Cochran doubled twice, drove in four runs and pitched a complete game with six strikeouts to lead Highlands (1-7, 1-6) to its first Section 1-4A win of the season. Allison Baum and Alanna Meloy doubled for Derry (3-6, 2-5).

Yough 10, West Mifflin 0 (5 inn.) — Kierra Waywood threw a two-hitter with five strikeouts as No. 2 Yough (12-2, 9-0) won in Section 2-4A. Sammie McGhee was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, and Kaylyn Odelli had an RBI triple.

Ellwood City 15, Riverside 2 (5 inn.) — Zoe Kalantzis homered, doubled and had five RBIs as Ellwood City (5-4, 5-3) won in Section 2-3A.

Chartiers-Houston 14, Bentworth 3 (5 inn.) — Jaylese Lombardi had four RBIs, and Kaci Alderson and Ella Brookman homered as No. 3 Chartiers-Houston (10-2, 6-2) won in Section 3-2A.

Bishop Canevin 14, Leechburg 9 — Aided by a 10-run fourth inning, Bishop Canevin snapped Class A No. 3 Leechburg's 20-game Section 1 winning streak. Clare McMahon went 3 for 4 for the Crusaders (5-3, 4-3). Morgan Pierce had four hits, including a double, for the Blue Devils (8-2, 7-1), and Daesha Knight homered.

Montour 7, Mt. Lebanon 3 — Hannah Gallagher was 2 for 3 with two RBIs as Montour (3-6) won a nonsection game.

Moon 17, Upper St. Clair 7 (6 inn.) — Steph Hytla was 5 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Morgan Toal and Shannon Camardese each had three RBIs as Moon (8-4) won a nonsection game.

Mt. Pleasant 4, Connellsville 1 — Addy Kubasky had two RBIs, and Chloe Poulich smacked two triples to help Class 3A No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (11-0) win a nonsection game. Brooke Miller homered for Class 5A No. 5 Connellsville (8-5).

Riverview 7, Serra Catholic 5 — Alaina Mazur's run-scoring single in the fifth put the Raiders up for good in a nonsection win against Serra (7-3). Junior Katelyn Davis finished a homer short of the cycle for the Raiders (7-3), while Molly Collins doubled and tripled. Carys Kenny-Howell struck out seven batters over six innings.

Steel Valley 4, Burrell 3 — Angelina Martin drove in a pair of runs with a hit in the bottom of the fifth to put Class 3A No. 5 Steel Valley up for good in a nonsection win over No. 4 Burrell (8-3). Brittany Dunn had a pair of hits for the Bucs.

West Greene 15, Waynesburg 3 — Winning pitcher Jade Renner hit a grand slam as Class A No. 2 West Greene (11-3) won a nonsection game. McKenna Lampe was 4 for 4, and Madison Lampe and Kaitlyn Rizor each went 3 for 3.

Ligonier Valley 18, Blairsville 0 (3 inn.) — Jane Garver threw a three-inning no-hitter with three strikeouts as Ligonier Valley (10-2, 9-0) won a District 6 Heritage Conference game. Abi Cmar, Kaylee Colt, Courtney McKlveen and Lexie Petrof all had three RBIs.
