High school roundup for April 9, 2018: No. 3 Butler takes down No. 1 Pine-Richland

Two baseball teams with WPIAL title aspirations slugged it out on a cold night in Butler County on Monday.

Ryan Lynn and Brandon Fleeger each knocked in two runs, and Isaiah Lucas doubled in another as No. 3-ranked Butler earned a 9-4 victory over No. 1 Pine-Richland in a Section 1-6A game at Kelly Automotive Park.

Connor Ollio earned the win for Butler (3-0, 1-0).

Josh Johnson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Josh Scherer had two hits and an RBI for the Rams (5-1, 0-1).

North Hills 8, Obama Academy 0 — Beau Braunlich and Jordan Pitchford combined for a one-hitter as North Hills (5-1, 1-0) won in Section 1-5A.

Braunlich threw five innings, allowing one hit with six strikeouts. Pitchford struck out two in two hitless innings.

Ringgold 3, Uniontown 1 — Ryan Varley, Luke Winterbottom and Koby Bubash all had two hits to help Ringgold (4-0, 3-0) to a Section 3-4A win.

Chase Angotti allowed one run on six hits in six innings to earn the win.

Valley 6, Shady Side Academy 0 — Andrew Serakowski struck out nine batters and gave up just four hits through 6 23 innings, leading Valley to a Section 1-3A victory.

Shane Demharter singled twice and drove in two runs for the Vikings (3-2, 1-0), who played their first game since returning from Myrtle Beach, S.C., last month. Serakowski doubled, and Eli Ferres drove in a run.

Riverside 11, New Brighton 1 (6 inn.) — In Section 2-3A, Austin Dambach and Danny Fox each had three RBIs, and Gunnar Boehm and Nic Ottaviani each had two to guide No. 1 Riverside (2-1, 2-0) to victory. Dambauch and Fox each homered. Ottaviani earned the win.

OLSH 9, Freedom 1 — Allex Santacroce was 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs and Scott Symons was 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead OLSH (2-2, 1-1) to a Section 2-2A win.

Jeannette 10, Monessen 0 (6 inn.) — Tre Cunningham was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, and Drake Petrillo and Nick Caesar each knocked in two runs as the Jayhawks earned a Section 2-A win in six innings. Cunningham also threw a five-hitter with six strikeouts for Jeannette (3-1, 1-0).

Greensburg C.C. 10, Jefferson-Morgan 0 (5 inn.) — Tom Voelker had three RBIs and Paul Rice and Antonio Cavallo each had two as Class A No. 2 GCC (1-1, 1-0) won a Section 2 game at Seton Hill. Cavallo threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts to earn the victory.

Softball

Steel Valley 12, Riverside 2 (5 inn.) — Morgan Farrah was 3 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs, and Marissa Hoesch hit a three-run double to lift Steel Valley (4-2, 3-0) to a Section 2-3A win.

Jeannette 14, Ellis School 1 (5 inn.) — Taylor-Lynn Finken, Grace Johnston, Faith Johnston, Abby Mortimore and Haley Kulha all had two RBIs as Jeannette (1-2, 1-2) won a Section 3-A game. Faith Johnston threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts to earn the win.

Boys tennis

Franklin Regional 5, Connellsville 0 — Anup Nadesan and Advait Kulkarni won singles matches, and the doubles teams of Vineet Madduru/Joey McGinn and Everest Yan/Frank Simpson also won as Franklin Regional (6-0, 5-0) earned a Section 1-AAA victory at Club Sport and Health.

Hempfield 3, Latrobe 2 — Mason Harbaugh and Aidan Kelly won in singles, and Brendan Sliwoski and AJ Lazar teamed up for a doubles triumph as Hempfield won a Section 1-AAA match. Garrett Stercho and Dominic Robinson/Anthony Fannie won for Latrobe.
