High school roundup for Dec. 12, 2018: Kiski Area wrestlers top Norwin in section opener

The Kiski Area wrestling team scored victories in eight bouts as it held off Norwin, 42-27, in the Class AA, Section 1A opener for both teams Wednesday evening.
Heavyweight Jack Dilts got the Cavaliers on the board with a pin in the opening bout, and Brayden Roscosky wrapped up the scoring for Kiski with a pin at 195.
In between, the Cavaliers got pinfall triumphs from Darren Miller (132), Cam Connor (160), Jack Blumer (170) and Nick Delp (182) and decision wins from Dom Giordano (120) and Jared Curcio (152).
Butler 60, Pine-Richland 18 — Steven Green (145 pounds), Nate McDonald (152), Jack Codispot (160), Cooper Baxter (182), Shawndell (220), Caleb Hartung (285) and Colton Spohn (132) all had pins for Butler (1-0, 1-0) in a Class AAA, Section 3A win.
Seneca Valley 49, Armstrong 30 — Alejandro Herrera-Rondon (120 pounds), Chanz Shearer (132), Antonio Amelio (152), Nick Montalbano (160), Patrick Johnson (195), Jason Geyer (138) and Drew Vlasnik (145) all had pins as Seneca Valley (1-0, 1-0) won a Class AAA, Section 3A match.
North Allegheny 57, Shaler 24 — Ian Branstetter (138 pounds), Nick Marcenelle (160), Ben Grafton (220) and Dylan Coy (106) had pins for North Allegheny (5-1, 1-0) in a Class AAA, Section 3B victory.
Andrew D’Agostino (132), Ian Scarberry (145), Joey Kremer (195) and Jeff Bonnette (285) had pins for Shaler (0-1, 0-1).
Burrell 82, South Allegheny 0 — Trent Valochik (126 pounds), Ian Oswalt (132), Anthony Corrado (182), Zach Rupert (195) and Jacob Bell (285) all had pins for Burrell (1-1, 1-0) in a Class AA, Section 3A win over South Allegheny. Noah Linderman (152) won a 13-4 major decision.
Shawn Szymanski (106), Nicholas Salerno (113), Aaron Edwards (120), Simon Slahtovsky (145), Cole Clark (160), Austin Mele (170), Richard Feroce (182) and Mason Slahtovsky (220) all won by forfeit.
Plum 42, Central Catholic 30 — The homestanding Mustangs recorded five pins and added two forfeit victories in a Class AAA, Section 1A win over the Vikings. Vinny Citrano (113), Paul McClintock (120), Dyllan Geraco (132), Evan Stinson (145) and Jarrod Citrano (152) each picked up falls, and Colin Stecik (160) and Damon Bracco (170) got their hands raised without wrestling. It was the section opener for both teams.
Indiana 39, Fox Chapel 36 — The Class AAA, Section 3B match wasn’t decided until the final bout. The Foxes got decision wins from Brendan Kost at 132 and Avery Bursick at 145 and pins from Josh Miller at 152, James Patterson at 195 and Eddie Farrell at 220. Jordana Matamoros added a forfeit victory at 106.
Derry 66, Yough 15 — The Derry wrestling team got off to an impressive start in section competition with a win over Yough in a Section 3B match.
Colton McCallen (106 pounds), Xavier Merlin (120), Nick Reeping (132), Garret Lenhart (145), Eric Catone (152), Trey Weinell (160), Brayden Mickinak (195) and Dom DeLuca (220) all had pins for the Trojans (4-2, 1-0).
George Gusing (285) had a pin for Yough (1-5, 0-1), which forfeited three weight classes.
Kiski Area 36, Norwin 27 — Darren Miller (132 pounds), Jack Blumer (170), Nick Delp (182) and Jack Dilts (285) had pins to lead Class AAA No. 1 Kiski Area (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 1A win.
Kurtis Phipps (126) and Ryan Weinzen (220) had pins for Norwin (0-1, 0-1).
Greensburg Salem 63, Penn Hills 4 — Cody Kaufman (120 pounds) and Dajauhn Hertzog (138) won a decision to help Greensburg Salem (1-0, 1-0) win a Class AAA, Section 1B match. The Golden Lions won nine bouts by forfeit.
Hempfield 81, Gateway 0 — Kyle Burkholder’s pin in 17 seconds at 120 pounds was one of 11 first-period falls for Hempfield (1-0, 1-0) en route to a Class AAA, Section 1B victory.
Latrobe 66, Woodland Hills 6 — Logan Scherff earned a pin for his first varsity victory at 182 pounds as Latrobe (2-0, 1-0) won a Class AAA, Section 1B match.
Tyler Ross (195) and Luke Shaffer (185) also earned pins. Woodland Hills (0-1, 0-1) forfeited the first nine weight classes.
Boys basketball
Blackhawk 59, Beaver Falls 50 — Sammy Fusetti’s 15 points led Blackhawk (1-3) to a nonsection win.
California 48, McGuffey 43 — Austin Grillo had 13 points, and Cochise Ryan added 12 as California (3-1) won a nonsection contest.
OLSH 82, Brashear 38 — Dante Spadafora and Austin Wigley each had 16 points as Class 2A No. 2 OLSH (3-0) won a nonsection game.
Propel Andrew Street 27, Perry 54 — Trae Elmore scored 23 points to pace Propel Andrew Street (4-0) in a nonsection win. Nate McKnight had 22 points for Perry (1-3).
Shaler 61, South Park 33 — Justin DeSabato scored 13 points, and Mekhi Reynolds added 11 as Shaler (2-1) won a nonsection game.
Union 69, Ellwood City 43 — Nate Meeks had 21 points to lead Union (4-0) to a nonsection victory.
Uniontown 61, Washington 55 — Billy Deshields had 14 points as Class 4A No. 5 Uniontown (2-1) won a nonsection game over Class 3A No. 5 Washington (1-1). Dan Ethridge had 19 points for the Little Prexies.
Greensburg Salem 70, Mt. Pleasant 37 — Greensburg Salem improved to 2-1 with a nonsection victory at Mt. Pleasant (0-3).
Hempfield 50, Hollidaysburg 37 — Marcus McCarthy had 16 points, and Drew Coletta added 10 as Hempfield (3-1) scored a nonsection victory. The Spartans led 24-14 at halftime and made a 13-8 run in the start of the second half.
Westinghouse 66, Monessen 59 — Jaymir Jackson and Rodkeem Byrd each scored 23 points, combining for 20 of the team’s 22 points in the fourth quarter, to lead the Bulldogs (1-4) to a win in the consolation game of the Mike Rettger Tournament at Franklin Regional.
Devin Whitlock led Monessen (0-3) with 22 points and made the all-tournament team, along with Byrd.
Marquell Smith and Darnell Howell each had 10 points for the Greyhounds.
Springdale 85, Jefferson-Morgan 55 — Demitri Fritch paced Springdale with 25 points in their nonsection win over Jefferson-Morgan. Michael Zolnierczyk scored 23 points for Springdale (2-1). Tahj Jacobs scored 24 points to lead Jefferson-Morgan (0-4).
Deer Lakes 63, Apollo-Ridge 31 — Brad Perrotte led all scorers with 22 points as Deer Lakes notched a nonsection win over Apollo-Ridge. Jared Colton and Colin Kadlick added nine points each for Deer Lakes (2-2). Bobby Mangan scored 11 points for Apollo-Ridge (0-4).
St. Joseph 88, Quigley Catholic 57 — St. Joseph led 28-5 after the first quarter and rolled to a nonsection win. Grant Bendis (19 points), Andrew Sullivan (17), Daniel Fábregas (14) and CJ Singleton (12) were in double figures for St. Joseph (3-1). DJ Summers led Quigley Catholic (0-3) with 17 points.
Connellsville 58, Kiski Area 53 (OT) — Jalen Rogers scored six of his game-high 31 points in overtime to help Connellsville (3-1) down Kiski Area (1-3) in a nonsection game. Nick Smith had 18 points, and Ryne Wallace scored 15 for the Cavaliers.
Western Pensylvania School for the Deaf 48, Cheswick Christian Academy 27 — Jerry Vargo scored 10 points for Cheswick Christian Academy (0-4) in a nonsection loss.
Girls basketball
Blackhawk 78, Quigley Catholic 31 — Mady Aulbach had 18 points to lead Class 4A No. 2 Blackhawk (3-1) to a nonsection win. Taylor Kirschner had 13 points for Class A No. 3 Quigley Catholic (1-3).
West Greene 63, Carmichaels 21 — Kaitlyn Rizor had 17 points to lead Class A No. 1 West Greene (3-1) to a nonsection win.
Washington 68, Monessen 23 — Carlye Allen had 18 points and Torri Finley and Kyla Woods added 15 as Washington (3-0) won a nonsection game. Qitarah Hardison had seven points for Monessen (0-4).
Purchase Line 47, Ligonier Valley 41 — Alexia Boyd scored 15 points, but Ligonier Valley (0-3, 0-1) fell short in a Heritage Conference matchup.
Cheswick Christian Academy 39, Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf 17 — Bethany Kosor led Chewsick Christian Academy (2-1) with 13 points in a nonsection win over the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (0-3). Kelsey Kiger added 11 points for the Chargers.
