High school roundup for Dec. 12, 2023: Freshman hits pair of buzzer-beaters to lift North Hills past Butler in OT

Freshman Nathan Schanbacher scored on a putback at the fourth-quarter buzzer to force overtime then hit a shot from the baseline at the buzzer in OT to lead North Hills to a 73-71 nonsection boys basketball victory over Butler on Tuesday night.

Eric James scored 25 points and Zach Pollaro added 20 for North Hills (2-1), which trailed 37-27 at the half. Braylon Littlejohn scored 28 points and Donovan Carney finished with 22 for Butler (2-1).

Avella 58, Freedom 44 – Westley Burchianti put in a 30-point effort as Avella (3-2) defeated Freedom (0-6) in nonsection play. Logan Bickerstaff scored 11 points and Cody Patterson scored 10 points for Freedom.

Baldwin 74, Bethel Park 59 – Caden Cherico made four 3-pointers and finished with 24 points, Nathan Wesling also had 24 points and Nathan Richards added 14 in a nonsection win for Baldwin (4-1). Shawn Davis scored 17 points, Michael Mathais followed with 12 and Tanner Pfeuffer put up 10 for Bethel Park (1-3).

Belle Vernon 79, Bishop Canevin 57 – Tommy Davis scored 25 points to lead Belle Vernon (2-1) to a nonsection victory. Zion Moore and Trevor Kovatch each added 16. Drew Allen led Bishop Canevin (1-3) with 19 points. Michael Vaughn and Jason Cross each had 11.

Burgettstown 64, Carlynton 61 – Zack Schrockman led all scorers with 23 points, James Leuice followed with 21 and Gerald Cox added 10 points for Burgettstown (4-0) in a nonsection win. Jaydin McKnight and Ryan Lewis each scored 22 points for Carlynton (1-3).

Burrell 75, St. Joseph 22 – Macky Bennis led the Bucs with 15 points while the trio of Tucker Bitar, Ryan Wass and Dylan McKallip each scored 12 points as Burrell (4-0) cruised to a nonsection victory against St. Joseph (0-5).

Chartiers Valley 51, Obama Academy 41 – Jayden Davis scored 15 points, Julian Semplice and Jake Lewis scored 12 points apiece, and Danny Slizik added 10 in a Chartiers Valley (3-2) nonsection win. Torrien Perkins put up 18 points and Kevion Harris had 12 for Obama Academy (0-3).

Deer Lakes 66, Mohawk 55 (2OT) – Billy Schaeffer scored 26 points as Deer Lakes (4-1) defeated Mohawk (0-3) in double overtime in a rematch of a WPIAL Class 3A playoff game from last season. Collin Rodgers added 18 and Wayne Love finished with 16 for the Lancers. Jay Wrona led the Warriors with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Bobby Fadden added 14 and Keigan Hopper had 12.

Derry 65, Greensburg Salem 60 – Nate Papuga posted a double-double with 35 points and 11 rebounds, Stan Rajkovich tossed in 11 points and John Wasnick scored 10 for Derry (4-1) in a nonsection win. Luke Rullo scored 18 points, Ty Martin chipped in 15 and Ryan Burkhart tallied 13 for Greensburg Salem (1-4).

East Allegheny 54, Riverview 46 – Brennan Ruttledge put up 25 points and Troy Anderson chipped in 10 as East Allegheny (1-3) got in the win column with a nonsection victory. Alex Schultheis scored 11 points and Nate Sprajcar added 10 for Riverview (2-2).

Elizabeth Forward 64, Ringgold 60 – Isaiah Turner put up 21 points, Charlie Meehleib added 14 and Cy Herchelroath added 13 as Elizabeth Forward (3-1) picked up a nonsection win. Szyair Dungee led Ringgold (1-3) with 18 points.

Ellwood City 71, Serra Catholic 59 – Joe Roth scored a game-high 29 points, Colton Crizer added 16 and Chris Smiley finished with 12 for Ellwood City (2-4) in a nonsection win. Pete Burke made four 3-pointers and finished with 24 points and Owen Dumbroski produced 20 points for Serra Catholic (3-2).

Erie McDowell 77, Brashear 52 – Titus Gilett made four 3-pointers and had 20 points and Garett White sank five 3s and finished with 18 points for Brashear (2-3) in a nonsection loss to McDowell. Tyler Grove led the Trojans with 28 points and Kamden Kramer added 18.

Frazier 66, Mapletown 28 – Brennan Stewart scored 19 points, Dailan McManus followed with 17 and Conlan Higbee finished with 10 as Frazier (2-3) beat Mapletown (0-3) in nonsection play. Roger Gradek scored nine points for the Maples.

Hampton 67, Avonworth 54 – Peter Kramer dropped 25 points and Liam Mignogna produced 18 to lead Hampton (4-0) to a nonsection win over Avonworth (3-1). Rowan Carmichael scored 21 points and Noah Goetz added 15 for the Antelopes.

Jefferson-Morgan 65, Beth-Center 52 – Jase Bedillion (14), Collin Bisceglia (14), Houston Guesman (13), Dayten Marion (12) and Max Ivanusic (11) all scored in double figures for Jefferson-Morgan (5-1) in a nonsection win. Jason Zellie scored 12 points, Jonah Sussan followed with 11 and Ryan Minerd and Brody Bebout each had 10 for Beth-Center (1-4).

Knoch 67, Mars 58 – Derek Lang scored 19 points to lead Knoch (4-0) to a nonsection win. Jackson Bauman added 15, Zane Pacek had 13, and Teegan Finucan finished with 10 for the Knights. Ryan Ceh led Mars (2-2) with 22 points. Drew Navetta added 15.

Monessen 68, Carmichaels 37 – Tim Kershaw put up 17 points while Lorenzo Gardner and Dennis Hawkins each scored 12 as Monsessen (2-1) defeated Carmichaels (2-3) in nonsection play. Ayden Adamson led the Mighty Mikes with 14 points.

Montour 61, Kiski School 49 – Jake Wolfe scored 23 points, including 11 in the second quarter, and Kaleb Platz finished with 13 points, including three 3-pointers in the first quarter, to lead Montour (3-1) to a nonsection victory. Daniel Batch added 10 for the Spartans. Radomir Bryzgalov scored 19 for Kiski School.

Moon 76, North Allegheny 60 – Elijah Guillory had a game-high 30 points with four 3-pointers as Moon (3-2) defeated North Allegheny (1-3) in a nonsection matchup. Charles Depner scored 14 points and Carter Tumulty had 11 points for Moon. Joe Dopirak scored a team-high 27 points for North Allegheny followed by Joe Marquis with 15.

Neshannock 54, Slippery Rock 46 – Talan Anderton and David Kwiat scored 12 points apiece and Anthony Bonner added 10 for Neshannock (4-1) in a nonsection win against Slippery Rock. Josh Book scored 26 for the Rockets.

Northgate 81, Sto-Rox 52 – Josh Williams dropped 21 points, Landon Lockett followed with 20 and Tylan Daniels added 11 for Northgate (2-1) in a nonsection victory. Shalen Burton led Sto-Rox (1-2) with 17 points.

Asher White had 13 points while Jefferson Moorefield-Brown and Will Siegel each scored 11 points for the Foxes.

South Allegheny 74, Washington 60 – Mike Michalski scored a game-high 27 points, Drew Cook drained four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points, and Fischer Ielase had 12 to lead South Allegheny (4-0) to a nonsection win. De’Ondre Daugherty scored 20 points, Ruben Gordon followed with 13, Corey Talley added 11 and Isaiah Watson produced 10 for Washington (0-5).

Southmoreland 68, Yough 62 – Ty Keffer scored 22 points as Southmoreland (4-0) picked up a nonsection win in a battle of top scorers. Noah Felentzer added 17 points and Ronnie Collins had 13 for the Scotties. Terek Crosby scored 25 points, Austin Matthews added 22, and Zander Aird had 15 for Yough (4-2).

South Side 75, Bentworth 46 – Brody Almashy led all scorers with 23 points, Andrew Corfield followed with 20 and Carter Wilson tossed in 14 as South Side (2-2) defeated Bentworth (1-3) in a nonsection contest. Ben Hays scored 10 points for the Bearcats.

Springdale 53, Environmental Charter 19 – John Hughes scored 15 points and Chase Weihrauch added 11 to lead Springdale (4-0) to a nonsection win over Environmental Charter.

Thomas Jefferson 73, Steel Valley 28 – Evan Berger scored 13 points to become the school’s all-time leading scorer as Thomas Jefferson (4-1) picked up a nonsection win. He has 1,234 career points. Nick Trklja added 10 points for the Jaguars. Tyson Barron had eight points for the Ironmen (0-5).

Trinity 72, Keystone Oaks 58 – Jacob Dunkle led all Hillers with 21 points as Trinity (2-2) defeated Keystone Oaks (0-4) in nonsection play. Dante ReRubbo added 19, Jonah Williamson 12 and Tyler Johnson 10 for Trinity. Erond Jakupi scored 36 points with four 3-pointers for Keystone Oaks.

Valley 53, Leechburg 46 – Mickael Allen scored 15 points and Jacob Staraniec added 11 to power Valley (1-3) to a nonsection win. Tayshawn Hawkins and Jaden Wall each chipped in 10. Jayden Floyd led leechburg (1-4) with 19. Brady Rollinger had 14.

West Mifflin 73, Perry Traditional Academy 23 – Daven Reynolds and David Fleming each scored 13 points, Jerome Corbett added 12, and Aaron Smith tossed in 11 as West Mifflin (3-2) rolled to a nonsection win. Javon Diamond and Hakil Neal each scored six points for Perry (0-6).

Winchester Thurston 64, Hillel Academy 14 – Anthony Pipkin scored 20 points and Michael Hammerling made five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points as Winchester Thurston (2-1) rolled to a nonsection win. Noam Azaguri and Yonah Iskowitz each had six points for Hillel (0-1).

North Catholic 4, Butler 1 – Beckett Dunn had two goals and an assist, Ryan Berry added a goal and two assists, and Anthony Neely had a goal and an assist in a Class A win for North Catholic (6-3-1). Brayden Hardsock scored for Butler (4-8).

Richland 6, Hampton 5 – Noah Brydon and Jack Lorence each scored twice and Brady Rex and Connor Bethmann scored a goal apiece as Richland (3-8) beat Hampton (2-9) in Class A. Sean Sullivan scored a natural hat trick while Daniel Leyes and Eli Schwarzbach also scored for the Talbots.

West Allegheny 8, Kiski 5 – John Wineland scored a hat trick while A.J. Jack and Branden Switalski each scored twice and Max Smith added another goal for West Allegheny (2-9) in a Class A win. Luke Patton scored a pair of goals and Ethan Bombalski added another for Kiski (0-10).

Wheeling Park 5, Westmont Hilltop 1 – Cooper Abraham scored four goals and Kaden Lyons chipped in another as Wheeling Park (9-3) defeated Westmont Hilltop (0-11) in Class A. Gavin Replogle scored for the Hilltoppers.
