High school roundup for Dec. 2, 2024: Rowan Carmichael hits for 34 in Avonworth win

Rowan Carmichael poured in 34 points and freshman Will Shields added 18 as Avonworth ran past Aquinas Academy, 89-82, in the Mike Rettger Memorial Tournament on Monday at Franklin Regional.

Eli Gardner added 13 points and Tom Werner had 11 for the Antelopes (1-0). Jake Guillen and Sam Duer scored 25 points apiece for Aquinas Academy (0-1). Jonah Burchill chipped in 12.

Beth-Center 62, Bentworth 36 – Jason Zellie scored 19 points and Brayden Hull added 17 to lead Beth-Center (1-0) to a nonsection win. Chris Harper and Ben Hays scored 10 points apiece for Bentworth (0-1).

Derry 61, Mt. Pleasant 20 – Brayden Robinson scored 20 points and John Wasnick and Stan Rajkovich added 11 points apiece to lead Derry (1-0) to a nonsection win over Mt. Pleasant (0-3).

Ellwood City 70, Sto-Rox 37 – Aaron Lake had 17 points and 16 rebounds to lead Ellwood City (2-1) to a nonsection win. Chris Smiley added 14 points and Kaleb Servick had 10 for the Wolverines. Javon Nelson led Sto-Rox (0-1) with 12 points.

Neighborhood Academy 79, Eden Christian 28 – Shamar Simpson led with 26 points, Courtney Wallace followed with 14 and Kedron Gilmore added 11 for Neighborhood Academy (2-0) in a nonsection win. River Bartran scored 11 points for Eden Christian (0-1).

Girls basketball

Armstrong 37, Highlands 31 – Avery Hogan scored 10 points for Armstrong (1-1) in a nonsection win. Tyarah Woody had 11 points for Highlands (0-1).

Beaver Falls 48, Hopewell 43 – Taylor Pullen led Beaver Falls (1-1) with 28 points and Dreaven Haskins added 14 in a nonsection win. Maya Richburg scored 14 points for Hopewell (0-3).

Belle Vernon 56, Rochester 51 – Saylor Lee scored 19 points and Aubrey Brown added 13 to push Belle Vernon (2-1) past Rochester (0-2) in a nonsection win. Tia Yellock led the Rams with 22 points and Nevaeh Squires had 11.

Bishop Canevin 47, Burgettstown 24 – Isabella Sysak scored 23 points and Kya Cooley added 14 to lead Bishop Canevin (1-0) to a nonsection win. Savanna Rush scored 15 points for Burgettstown (1-2).

Deer Lakes 61, Valley 31 – Anna Clark scored 18 to lead Deer Lakes (3-0) to a nonsection win. Sophia Laurenza added 15 points and Josie Farster had 13 for the Lancers. Janelle Norman led Valley (1-2) with 12 points.

Elizabeth Forward 66, Aquinas Academy 44 – Michelle Jellison led Elizabeth Forward (1-0) with 22 points, Mia Sostaric added 16 and Kaelynn Settles had 13 in a nonsection win. Tess Duer scored 26 points for Aquinas Academy (0-1).

Geibel Catholic 71, Southmoreland 27 – Emma Larkin hit for 33 points and Mallory Clemmer added 20 to power Geibel Catholic (3-0) to a nonsection win. Olivia Aumer led Southmoreland (0-1) with 18 points.

Jeannette 38, Leechburg 34 – Navarah Smith scored 21 points to lead Jeannette (1-0) to a nonsection victory in coach Jenna Lusby’s debut. Mary Jones added 10 points for the Jayhawks. Addie Zanotto scored 16 points and Josalyn Collini had 10 for Leechburg (0-3).

Kiski Area 61, Serra Catholic 54 – Rikiya Garcia-Broaden scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for Kiski Area (1-0) in a nonsection win. Maddie Joyce added 14, Jada Blanciak 12 and Gianna DeVito 11 for the Cavaliers. Abby Genes scored 24 and Bella Dumbroski added 19 for Serra Catholic (0-1).

Laurel 49, Mohawk 20 – Shyan Tindall and Jael Henderson scored 14 points apiece to lead Laurel (1-2) in a nonsection win. Maddi Crawford scored 10 points for Mohawk (0-1).

West Mifflin 36, Montour 30 – Savaughn Wimbs scored 11 points and A’ryah Scott added 10 to help West Mifflin (1-1) to a nonsection victory. Sienna Palmer scored 10 to lead Montour (2-1).

Montour 6, Blackhawk 1 – Aiden Moskovitz had a hat trick and added an assist for Montour (7-2) in a Class A win. Jonah Camardese Woodruff had a goal and an assist and Trey Varga and Jimmy Stewart also scored. Grant Shroads had a goal for Blackhawk (5-3).

Moon 5, Hampton 2 – Landon Watson collected two goals and an assist and Brody Eckert and Clayton Foster had a goal and an assist apiece for Moon (10-1) in a Class A win. Eric Hartman also scored. Eli Glynn and Michael Cummings had goals for Hampton (4-7).

Neshannock 7, Wilmington 2 – John Moniodes had two goals and an assist and Marko Relic added a goal and two assists to lead Neshannock (7-2) to a Division 2 win. Jacob Gruber had a goal and an assist and Grant Hennon, Hayden Tatterson and Kent Jones also scored. Brody Young and Beckett Miller had goals for Wilmington (0-6).

North Allegheny 3, Pine-Richland 1 – William Kasunich had a goal and an assist and Gianni Lochiatto and Tommy Vidra also scored for North Allegheny (5-2) in a Class 3A win. Josh Lanyard scored for Pine-Richland (3-6).

North Hills 6, Butler 5 (OT) – Tobias Kiger scored the overtime winner and Jonathan Trosky had three goals and two assists for North Hills (3-4-1) in a Class A victory. Mason Heichel scored two goals and Anthony Trombatt and Brayden Hardsock had a goal and three assists apiece for Butler (0-5-1). Cole Hunt and Ameer Cooper also scored for North Hills.

Penn-Trafford 3, Bishop McCort 1 – Aiden Drotos scored two goals and Brock Bienemann added one to lead Penn-Trafford (9-2) to a Class 2A win. Mark Pazniak scored for Bishop McCort (3-5-1).

Quaker Valley 6, Chartiers Valley 2 – Max Modrovich scored twice to lead Quaker Valley (11-0) in a battle of the top two teams in the Class A Gold division. Ben McHenry, Jace Vasbinder, Colin York and Jacob Keisel also scored. Tyler Held had a goal and an assist and Dayton Yanko also scored for Chartiers Valley (8-1).

Ringgold 6, Burrell 5 (OT) – Caden Doran completed his hat trick with the winning goal in overtime to lift Ringgold (7-3) to a Division 2 win. Matt Sylvester scored twice and Brady Lippert had a goal and two assists. Dom Rosa and Mike Morazczyk each had a goal and two assists and Dante Taliani and Forrest Baird had a goal and an assist apiece for Burrell (7-2-1).

Seneca Valley 4, Central Catholic 1 – Tyler Garvin had a goal and two assists, John Sroka added a goal and an assist and Braden Morin and Jimmy Murtha also scored to lead Seneca Valley (7-0) to a Class 3A win. Santino Strobel scored for Central Catholic (5-4-2).

South Fayette 5, Thomas Jefferson 4 – Ivan Kalinkou finished his hat trick with the game-winning goal with 35 seconds left in regulation as South Fayette (4-4-1) rallied from two goals down after two periods to win in Class 3A. Nathaniel Keller scored with 2:21 and 2:02 to go to tie it. Brian Spencer scored twice and Lucas Blose had a goal and an assist for Thomas Jefferson (5-5).

Wheeling Central Catholic 2, Kiski 0 – Gary Hatfield and Braden Baker scored and Juliana Bradford made 18 saves to record the shutout as Wheeling Central Catholic (5-5) blanked Kiski (0-8-1) in Class A.
