High school roundup for Feb. 13, 2025: 21st-seeded Springdale wins playoff opener

Patrick Wylly scored 15 points as No. 21 Springdale took a 10-point lead at halftime and went on to a 42-33 victory over No. 12 Jefferson-Morgan in a WPIAL Class 2A preliminary round boys basketball playoff game Thursday night.

Robby Simmen and Liam Dexter each added seven points for the Dynamos (14-8), who will face No. 5 Northgate in the first round Monday. Jeremiah Robertson led Jefferson-Morgan (15-8) with 11 points.

Bentworth 65, South Side 40 – Christopher Harper scored 24 points and Ben Hays added 23 to lead No. 15 Bentworth (11-10) to a Class 2A preliminary round win. The Bearcats, who will face No. 2 Sewickley Academy in the first round Monday, took control with a 29-11 scoring advantage in the third quarter. It was the 200th career victory for Bentworth coach Bob Kennedy. Andrew Corfield led No. 18 South Side (11-12) with 11 points.

Brentwood 59, West Greene 49 – Forrest Betz scored 21 points and No. 19 Brentwood (9-13) used a 23-9 advantage in the second quarter to pull away in the Class 2A preliminary round. Colton Rosing added 12 points for the Spartans, who will face No. 3 Jeannette in the first round Monday. Darren Knight scored 14 points, Lane Allison had 12 and Matt Wassil added 10 for No. 14 West Greene (12-9).

Laurel 50, Eden Christian 42 – Jayden Iorio scored 26 points and No. 16 Laurel (12-11) used a 12-4 advantage in the fourth quarter to win in the Class 2A preliminary round. Mason Ernst added 12 points for the Spartans, who will meet top-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic in the first round Monday. Mason Dean scored 19 points to lead No. 17 Eden Christian (7-16).

Winchester Thurston 50, Beth-Center 39 – Michael Hammerling scored 20 points and Matt Southers added 17 as No. 13 Winchester Thurston (16-7) won a Class 2A preliminary round game. Jason Zellie led No. 20 Beth-Center (9-14) with 12 points. The Bears will face No. 4 Neshannock in the first round Monday.

Cheswick Christian Academy 49, Plants & Pillars 42 – Brady Rochkind scored 20 points to reach 999 points for his career and Joseph Rosio added 13 as Cheswick Christian (10-0) closed out its regular season with a nondivision win. Titus Matthews scored 17 and Desmond Lowe had 15 for Planets & Pillars (3-7).

Girls basketball

Apollo-Ridge 70, Bentworth 49 – Madison Hughley scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures for No. 16 Apollo-Ridge (10-11) in a Class 2A preliminary round win. Josalin McCauley added 15 points and Lauren Gamble and Kyler Toland each had 11 for the Vikings, who will take on top-seeded Neshannock in the first round Tuesday. Elizabeth Wade scored 15 points and Kayla O’Dell added 14 for No. 17 Bentworth (7-15).

Hockey

Carrick 7, Central Valley 2 – Ivan Manculich had two goals and three assists, Drew Bird collected a goal and five assists and Ethan Semenov scored twice to lead Carrick (8-6-3) to a Division 2 win. Treyton Palocsik had a goal and an assist for Central Valley (5-13).

Connellsville 7, Ringgold 0 – Alex Boone scored a hat trick, Braden Rodgerson had two goals and an assist and Nick Daniels-Nimmick made 30 saves to lead Connellsville (12-5-2) past Ringgold (10-8) in Division 2 action.

Mars 6, Avonworth 5 (SO) – Jack Weaver scored twice, Jack Tirch and Ben Bowser each had a goal and an assist and Xavier Bossola added a goal for Mars (17-3) in a shootout win in Class A. Jack Dolan scored the tying goal with four seconds left in regulation for Avonworth (14-3-2). Cooper Powell collected a goal and three assists and Austin Dzadovsky scored twice.

Wheeling Park 6, Richland 2 – Cooper Abraham had two goals and an assist, Anna Brannare also scored twice and Gavin Hudrlik and Kaden Schnarr each had a goal and an assist for Wheeling Park (11-5-2) in Class A. Michael Reing and Wesley Dunlap scored for Richland (1-19).
