High school roundup for Feb. 20, 2024: No. 2 McKeesport holds off No. 15 Hampton in Class 5A 1st round

Rachael Manfredo scored 14 points and Madison Miller added 11 to lead No. 2 McKeesport to a 49-46 victory over No. 15 Hampton in a WPIAL Class 5A first-round girls basketball game Tuesday night.

The Tigers (19-3) will meet No. 7 Indiana in Friday’s quarterfinals. Meghan Murray scored 24 points for the Talbots (12-11), who jumped out to a 14-5 lead after one quarter.

Girls basketball

Armstrong 51, Latrobe 40 – Emma Paul had 22 points and 11 assists to lead No. 5 Armstrong (19-4) to a Class 5A first-round win. Sarai Weaver added 11 points for the River Hawks, who will face No. 4 Lincoln Park in Friday’s quarterfinals. Elle Snyder and Carley Berk scored 10 points apiece for No. 12 Latrobe (11-12), which cut a 20-point halftime deficit to three points in the fourth quarter before Armstrong pulled away.

Central Valley 69, West Mifflin 59 – Nyah Hayes scored 23 points and Maddie Spirnak and Izzy Miller added 13 points apiece to lead No. 7 Central Valley (12-10) to a Class 4A first-round win. The Warriors will face No. 2 North Catholic in Friday’s quarterfinals. Kendall Lee scored 18 points and Savaughn Wimbs had 16 for No. 10 West Mifflin (10-10).

Indiana 43, Moon 34 – Bella Antonucci scored 18 points to lead No. 7 Indiana (17-5) to a Class 5A first-round win. Cassie Boyer and Stella Stossel added six points apiece for the Little Indians, who will face No. 2 McKeesport in Friday’s quarterfinals. Maria Depner scored 12 points and Leiana Rucker had 10 for No. 10 Moon (14-8).

Laurel Highlands 65, Quaker Valley 29 – Miya Harris scored 24 points and Ayrianna Sumpter followed with 22 for No. 5 Laurel Highlands (19-2) in a Class 4A first-round win over No. 12 Quaker Valley (5-16). Sierra Jenkins added 13 points for the Mustangs, who will face No. 4 Highlands in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Lincoln Park 43, Penn-Trafford 42 – Sarah Scott hit the game-winning layup at the buzzer for No. 4 Lincoln Park (21-2) in a Class 5A first-round win. Scott finished with 10 points and Maddie Skya had 15 for the Leopards, who will face No. 5 Armstrong in Friday’s quarterfinals. Olivia Pepple scored 14 points for No. 13 Penn-Trafford (14-9).

Oakland Catholic 55, Penn Hills 48 – London Creach scored 17 points to lead No. 1 Oakland Catholic (23-0) to a Class 5A first-round win. Raygen Hintemeyer had 12 points on four 3-pointers and Kaylee DeAngelo added 11 for the Eagles, who will face No. 8 North Hills in Friday’s quarterfinals. Hannah Pugliese and Milani Oliver scored 13 points apiece and Cara Crawford had 12 for No. 17 Penn Hills (12-12).

South Fayette 55, Mars 36 – Haylie Lamonde scored 24 points to lead No. 6 South Fayette (15-8) to a Class 5A first-round win. Juliette Leroux added 14 for the Lions, who will meet No. 3 Trinity in the quarterfinals Friday. Alexis Cashdollar scored 14 points for No. 11 Mars (11-11).

Trinity 59, Woodland Hills 54 – Maddy Roberts scored 17 points and Ruby Morgan had 12 to lead No. 3 Trinity (15-8) to a Class 5A first-round win. Macie Justice added 11 points and Sam Horne had 10 for the Hillers, who will meet No. 6 South Fayette in Friday’s quarterfinals. Jhalynn Wilson scored 20 points and Hope Hawkins had 17 for No. 14 Woodland Hills (11-12).

Boys basketball

Aliquippa 70, Nazareth Prep 57 – Cameron Lindsey, Tiqwai Hayes and Joshua Pratt each scored 11 points to lead top-seeded Aliquippa (18-5) to a Class 2A first-round win. The Quips will take on No. 8 Serra Catholic in the quarterfinals Friday. Will Evans scored 25 and Khylil Johnson added 12 for No. 16 Nazareth Prep (6-13).

Cheswick Christian Academy 66, East Liverpool Christian 33 – Grant Rochkind had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Brady Rochkind added 17 points to lead Cheswick Christian Academy to a win in the Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference quarterfinals. Joseph Rosio added 15 points for the Chargers, who will meet Harvest Baptist in the semifinals Thursday. Uriah Farley led East Liverpool Christian with 12 points.

Eden Christian 67, Shenango 56 – Nathan Garrett scored 31 points as No. 10 Eden Christian (13-10) rallied from a 10-point deficit after the first quarter to win a Class 2A first-round game. Grayson Reichart added 13 points and Mason Dean had 11 for the Warriors, who will meet No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic in the quarterfinals Friday. Brody McQuiston scored 21 points and Joey Campoli added 12 for No. 7 Shenango (12-11).

Fort Cherry 69, Winchester Thurston 48 – Shane Cornali, Derek Errett and Blake Sweder scored 20 points apiece to lead No. 4 Fort Cherry (18-5) to a Class 2A first-round win. Errett had 10 assists and Cornali grabbed 10 rebounds for the Rangers, who will meet No. 5 Bishop Canevin in the quarterfinals Friday. Henry McComb scored 16 points and Jaromit Lozano added 11 for No. 13 Winchester Thurston (11-9).

Northgate 66, Clairton 52 – Josh Williams and Ty Daniels scored 15 points apiece to lead No. 3 Northgate (17-5) to a Class 2A first-round win. Kaden Kemp had 11 points and Desmond Williams added 10 for the Flames, who will meet No. 6 Jeannette in Friday’s quarterfinals. Mike Wright scored 15 points and Qua’Jon Miller had 10 for No. 14 Clairton (10-13).

Serra Catholic 58, Chartiers-Houston 47 – Isiah Petty scored 24 points and Pete Burke added 16 to lead No. 8 Serra Catholic (16-7) to a Class 2A first-round win. The Eagles, who will meet No. 1 Aliquippa in Friday’s quarterfinals, took control with an 18-9 advantage in the second quarter. Nate Gregory scored 21 and Justus Buckingham added 16 for No. 9 Chartiers-Houston (16-7), which led 16-12 after the first quarter.

Hockey

McDowell 8, West Allegheny 4 – Harrison Parra had two goals and two assists and Dylan Payne and Bryce Peterson each registered two goals and an assist for McDowell (5-12-3) in a Class A win. Austin Falick scored twice and Brendan Burke had a goal and two assists for West Allegheny (2-18).

Peters Township 6, Cathedral Prep 0 – Camden Martin had a goal and two assists, Charlie Caputo and Troy Jones each added a goal and an assist, and Kyle Thomas and Ethan Williams combined on the shutout as Peters Township (13-4-2) beat Cathedral Prep (7-11-1) in Class 3A.

Trinity 11, Knoch 5 – Cole Johnson and Seamus Coyle each had two goals and two assists and Cale Bitz collected a goal and three assists to lead Trinity (3-15) to a Varsity D2 win. Mick Ritts scored twice and Zach Weiland, Dylan Reich and Nick Olshanski each added a goal for Knoch (5-14).
