High school roundup for Jan. 9, 2019: Jackson’s 37 points lead Gateway past Baldwin

Lexi Jackson racked up a 37-point total to lead the Gateway girls basketball team to a 71-53 nonsection win Wednesday at Baldwin.

The Gators, ranked fifth in Class 5A, improved to 10-2 overall with their sixth straight victory while the 6A Baldwin girls fell to 6-5.

Jackson, a 6-foot-3 junior center, netted 15 first-half points and 22 after halftime. She accounted for 15 of her team’s 27 field goals in the game.

Sophomore guard/forward Dynasty Shegog chipped in with 15 points for Gateway. Freshman guard Alexis Margolis (9) and senior guard/forward Mary Kromka (7) combined for 16.

Three players attained double figures for Baldwin, led by sophomore guards Alexia Bernotas and Abby Marzina with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Anna Lucarelli, also a sophomore guard, hit for 10 points while freshman guard Emiley Hillgartner accounted for nine second-half points.

Gateway held a 32-21 halftime lead before the Highlanders rallied to cut the deficit to 42-38 midway through the third quarter.

The Gators answered with a 9-0 run to end the stanza and secure a 51-38 cushion.

Jackson, Shegog and Margolis sparked the visitors to a 20-15 scoring advantage in the game’s final eight minutes.

Frazier 64, Monessen 36 — Brooke Poling had 22 points and Sierra Twigg added 21 as Frazier (7-5) won a nonsection game. Mercedes Majors had 10 for Monessen (1-10).

Apollo-Ridge 45, Winchester Thurston 38 Apollo-Ridge outscored Winchester Thurston, 15-7, in the fourth quarter to pull away for a nonsection victory. Maddy Moore had 19 points and sank five 3-pointers for the Vikings (8-3), and Morgan Gamble added 11 points. Nya Nicholson and Mia Roberts netted 16 points apiece for Winchester Thurston (4-4).

Boys basketball

Montour 44, West Allegheny 42 — Tyler Banks had the game-winning putback, and Jaden Nelson scored 22 points to lead Montour (6-6, 3-2) to a Section 2-5A win.

South Side Beaver 61, Shenango 59 — Jake McDougal tallied 35 points to lead South Side Beaver (9-4, 3-2) to a Section 3-2A win.

Chartiers Valley 74, Central Valley 40 — Jared Goldstrom had 19 points, including five 3-pointers, as No. 5 Chartiers Valley (8-2) won a nonsection game. Joe Pipilo added 17 points for the Colts.

Thomas Jefferson 74, Belle Vernon 44 — Isaac McNeil scored 14 points as Thomas Jefferson (6-6) won a nonsection game. Mitch Pohlot had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Leopards (2-11).

Uniontown 77, Mt. Pleasant 28 — Billy Deshields scored 24 points as Uniontown (7-3) rolled to a nonsection win. Luke Brander had nine points for Mt. Pleasant (2-10).

Trinity Christian 75, Cheswick Christian Academy 49 — Jerry Vargo had a game-high 25 points for Cheswick Christian Academy (1-10) in a nonsection loss. Jesse Radvansky added 10 points for the Chargers. Zechary Wu (18 points), Gavin Welsh (15) and Ben Blackburn (14) all finished in double figures for Trinity Christian (2-5).

Apollo-Ridge 46, South Allegheny 42 — Jake Fello notched a game-high 17 points and connected on four 3-pointers to help Apollo-Ridge (6-7) score a nonsection win at South Allegheny (3-9). Keighton Reese added 15 points and sank four 3-pointers, and Klay Fitzroy scored 12. Ethan Kirkwood led South Allegheny with 15 points, and Omar Faulkner scored 13.

Wrestling

Southmoreland 54, Yough 18 — The Crosstown Cup is staying at Southmoreland. For the fifth straight season, the Scotties defeated rival Yough in a Class AA, Section 3B match.

Jason Bloom (120 pounds), Andrew Johnson (126), Nick Yeskey (145), Austin McBeth (152), Anthony Govern (182), Brett Huffman (195) and Colt Harper (220) all had pins for the Scotties (2-2, 2-2).

Jake Sever (170) had a pin for Yough (3-7, 1-3).

Derry 71, Frazier 12 — Kace Sabedra (113), Jason Baker (138), Garret Lenhart (145), Eric Catone (152), Dom DeLuca (220) and Noah Cymmerman (285) all had pins as No. 3 Derry (8-2, 4-0) rolled to a Class AA, Section 3B win.

Franklin Regional 63, Central Catholic 15 — The No. 10-ranked Panthers (3-1, 3-1) got pins from Garrett Thompson (120 pounds), Mason Spears (138) and Mario Sarnic (145) en route to a Class AAA, Section 1A victory.

Elizabeth Forward 54, Mt. Pleasant 16 — Ryan Michaels (113) and Chris Bruce (152) won decisions to guide No. 10 Elizabeth Forward (3-1, 3-1) to a Class AA, Section 3B win. Kyle Jones won a major decision at 160 pounds for Mt. Pleasant (4-5, 2-2).

Highlands 48, Riverview 10 — Jrake Burford (120 pounds), Chase D’Angelo (145) and Blake Clark (152) scored pins for Highlands in a Section 3-AA victory. Isaac Murphy (126) earned a 15-8 major decision for Riverview, and Giovanni Savko (160) recorded a pin.

Burrell 69, Summit Academy 6 Burrell accrued nine pins on its way to a Section 3-AA win. Shawn Szymanski (106 pounds), Nicholas Salerno (113), Ian Oswalt (120), Trent Valovchick (126), Anthony Corrado (138), Noah Linderman (145), Dominic Holmes (152), Austin Mele (160) and Mason Slahtovsky (195) all won by fall for the Bucs. Zach Rupert (170) earned an 11-8 decision over Summit Academy’s Moises Quintanilla.
