High school roundup for March 30, 2019: Canon-McMillan drops Montour

At Wild Things Park, Noah Burke went 2 for 2 with two RBIs as the Canon-McMillan baseball team (3-2) scored five runs in the third inning and held on to beat Montour, 9-6, in nonsection play. Alex Gregory and Austin Able each added two RBIs in the win. Jon Tokarczyk drove in three runs for Montour (3-3), which scored four runs in the fifth inning to pull within three.

Penn-Trafford 10, West Mifflin 0 — Penn-Trafford’s Hayden Ford, Tyler Chrise and Zach Kelly combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter against West Mifflin (0-2) in nonsection play. Ford struck out six in two innings followed by Chrise striking out three in two innings. Kelly finished the game by striking out the side. Mario Disso drove in three runs for Penn-Trafford (3-0), and Bobby Lane collected two RBIs.

Central Catholic 7, Hempfield 4 — Zach Palmer and Brandon Gelpi each had two-run homers to lead Central Catholic (5-1) to a nonsection win over Hempfield (4-1). Conor Deasy hit a two-run double, and Joe Olsavsky went 3 for 4 in the win. Reno Brasili went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to lead Hempfield.

Mohawk 7, New Castle 6 — Braydon Cameron went 2 for 4 with a double as Mohawk (3-1) held on to win in the bottom of the seventh inning over New Castle (1-2) in nonsection action. Tyler Cummings went 3 for 4 with two runs scored for Mohawk. Vince Soukovich went 3 for 3 with a triple, home run, walk, two RBIs and three runs scored for New Castle. Joe Leslie earned the win on the mound after allowing one run in five innings while striking out two and walking one.

South Park 9, Sullivan North (Tenn.) 1 — South Park (4-1) scored seven runs over the final two innings in its win at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach over Sullivan North (Tenn.).

Softball

Latrobe 9, Canon-McMillan 3 — Emily Schmucker went 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs as Latrobe (4-0) defeated Canon-McMillan (3-1) in nonsection play. Kiley Myers added two RBIs, and Jordan Novak went 3 for 4. Jordan Tallman struck out 12 for the win. Latrobe has outscored opponents 34-3.

Ligonier Valley 3, Belle Vernon 1 — In nonsection play, Ligonier Valley (4-0) scored all of its runs in the first inning, and Jane Garverc made it stand at Belle Vernon (1-4). Garverc struck out four, and Courtney McKlveen singled three times for Ligonier Valley. Sophie Godzak, who knocked in Belle Vernon’s only run, struck out eight in the loss.

West Greene 11, Campbellsville (Ky.) 0 — McKenna Lampe went 3 for 5 with four RBIs as West Greene (1-2) beat Campbellsville (Ky.) at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. Lampe hit a two-run inside-the-park home run in her first at-bat of the sixth inning and then followed that later in the inning with a two-run, ground-rule double to invoke the mercy rule. Kaitlyn Rizor went 3 for 4 to join Lampe among seven West Greene batters who had multiple hits as the Pioneers finished with 17.

Ellwood City 14, Shenango 2 — In six innings, leadoff hitter Ariana Garroway went 3 for 3 with two doubles and four runs scored to lead Ellwood City (2-1) to a nonsection win at Shenango (2-1). Natalia Greco and Kyla Servick added two RBIs each for Ellwood City, which scored seven runs in the sixth inning.
