High school roundup for March 8, 2024: Fox Chapel knocks off District 10 champion Cathedral Prep

Asher White tied a career high with 23 points, sinking five 3-pointers, as Fox Chapel knocked off District 10 champion Erie Cathedral Prep, 57-52, in a PIAA Class 5A first-round boys basketball game Friday night.
Jefferson Moorefield-Brown was good for 19 points, and Will Siegel pulled in 13 boards for the Foxes (16-11), the fifth seed out of the WPIAL. Amare Pickens put up 25 for Cathedral Prep (15-11).
Fox Chapel will play Bethel Park, the sixth seed out of the WPIAL, in Tuesday’s second round.
Avonworth 65, Punxsutawney 43 – Rowan Carmichael led all scorers with 34 points and Anthony Arlia added 14 as Avonworth (18-9) beat Punxsutawney (14-11) in the Class 4A first round. Noah Weaver scored 11 and Zach Presloid followed with 10 for Punxsutawney. Avonworth will take on North Catholic in Tuesday’s second round.
Bethel Park 59, Hershey 45 – Michael Mathias sank six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points and Shawn Davis scored 20 to lead Bethel Park (14-13) to a Class 5A first-round win. Logan Richards had 14 points and Derek Guzman produced 13 for District 3 runner up Hershey (21-4). The Black Hawks will take on Fox Chapel in the second round Tuesday night.
Cheswick Christian Academy 73, Central Christian (Conn.) 28 – Joseph Rosio scored 22 points, including five 3-pointers in the first half, to lead Cheswick Christian in the semifinals of the 5A division at the National Christian School Athletic Association tournament. Grant Rochkind added 17 points, including four 3s in the first half, and Brady Rochkind added 16 points for the Chargers, who will meet Cross Roads (WV) in the championship game at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Eastern York 56, South Allegheny 55 – District 3 champion Eastern York (19-7) got past South Allegheny (18-9), the sixth seed out of the WPIAL, in a Class 4A first-round game. Eastern York will face Valley View in the second round Tuesday.
Elk County Catholic 85, Monessen 54 – Wil Wertman led all scorers with 34 points, Colby Nussbaum added 14, Lance O’Neill followed with 13, and Chase Simbeck had 11 as Elk County (25-2) rolled to a Class A opening round win. Lorenzo Gardner scored 18 points, Rodney Johnson tallied 15 and Devontae Robinson chipped in with 12 for Monessen (20-6). Elk County Catholic will face Union in the second round Tuesday.
Farrell 69, Rochester 45 – Danny Odem dropped 21 points and Dontaye Bell scored 13 to lead Farrell (20-5) to a victory in the PIAA Class A first round. Xavier Rigby hit for 14 points and Jayvin Hemer added 11 for Rochester (17-9). Farrell will take on District 9 third-place finisher Cameron County in the second round Tuesday.
Hampton 63, Hickory 43 – Peter Kramer produced 24 points and Liam Mignonga recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds as Hampton (23-4) prevailed over District 10 runner-up Hickory (17-9) in the Class 4A first round. Dom Uberti had 13 points for the Hornets. The Talbots advance to play District 6 champion Greater Johnstown in the second round Tuesday.
Imani Christian 88, Union (Rimersburg) 65 – WPIAL champion Imani Christian (15-10) bested District 9 fifth-place finisher Union (Rimersburg) (13-12) in the opening round of the Class A playoffs. The Saints will face District 9 runner up Clarion in Tuesday’s second round.
Mechanicsburg 60, Gateway 52 – Chase Yanoski scored 33 points to lead Mechanicsburg (21-5) past Gateway (18-9) in the Class 5A first round. Mechanicsburg will meet Shaler in the second round Tuesday.
Neighborhood Academy 63, Rocky Grove 40 – Courtney Wallace put up 25 points and had 10 rebounds while Syncer Nicholson and Kedron Gilmore each scored 11 points as Neighborhood Academy (19-6) defeated Rocky Grove (16-9) in the Class A first round. Landen Carter led Rocky Grove with 12 points. Neighborhood Academy will meet District 6 champion Bishop Carroll in the second round Tuesday.
North Catholic 67, Warren 58 – Max Hurray scored 21 points to lead North Catholic (17-9) past Warren (20-6) in the Class 4A first round. Owen Maddalon added 13 points and Jude Rottmann had 11 for the Trojans, who will meet Avonworth in the second round Tuesday. Brady Berdine scored 22 and Braylon Barnes had 15 for Warren.
Shaler 73, Greencastle-Antrim 58 – Keegan Smetanka scored 21 points and Kaden Orga and Brandon London added 13 each as Shaler (24-3) bested Greencastle-Antrim (20-7) in the Class 5A first round. The Titans will take on District 3 champion Mechanicsburg on Tuesday in the second round.
Union 59, Turkeyfoot Valley 33 – Lucas Stanley dropped 25 points to lead Union (16-11) past District 5 runner-up Turkeyfoot Valley (19-7) in the opening round of the Class A playoffs. The Scotties will play District 9 champion Elk County Catholic in Tuesday’s second round.
Uniontown 67, Grove City 33 – Jamire Braxton scored 19 points, Notorious Grooms and Calvin Winfrey had 11 points apiece, and Jeremiah Hager added 10 to lead Uniontown (23-4) to a Class 4A first-round win. Nathan Greer scored 10 points for Grove City (15-11). The Red Raiders will face Lincoln Park in Tuesday’s second round.
York Suburban 52, Thomas Jefferson 48 – Kai Stryhn scored 16 points and Kane Stryhn and CJ Rissmiller added 11 each to lead York Suburban (21-6) past Thomas Jefferson (21-5) in the Class 5A first round. Evan Berger scored 16 points, Noah Prosser added 12 and Nicholas Trklja had 10 for the Jaguars. York Suburban will meet Moon in the second round Tuesday.

Avonworth 54, Wilmington 40 – Greta O’Brien scored 25 points and Rebecca Goetz added 13 to lead Avonworth (23-2) to a Class 3A first-round win. Lia Krarup scored 21 points for Wilmington (20-6). The Antelopes will face Forest Hills in Tuesday’s second round.
Bishop McCort 61, Serra Catholic 55 – Gianna Gallucci scored 25 points and Cami Beppler had 12 to lead Bishop McCort (25-2) to a Class 2A first-round win. Bri Battles scored 14 points for Serra Catholic (21-6). The Crushers will face Clairton in Tuesday’s second round.
Chartiers Valley 44, Altoona 43 – Lilah Turnbull scored 18 points and Emma Reynolds added 15 to lead Chartiers Valley (17-8) to a Class 6A first-round win over the District 6 champs. Jaiden Krull scored 20 points and Melaka Eyer had 10 for Altoona (20-5). The Colts will face Norwin in Tuesday’s second round.
Clairton 55, Redbank Valley 51 – Iyanna Wade scored 39 points to lead Clairton (20-6), the sixth seed from the WPIAL, to a Class 2A first-round win over District 9 champion Redbank Valley (20-6). The Bears will take on Bishop McCort in the second round Tuesday.
Elk County Christian 45, Monessen 16 – Lucy Klawuhn scored 12 points and Sydney Alexander had 11 for Elk County Christian (26-2) in a Class A first-round win. Madison Johnson scored six points for Monessen (19-7). The Crusaders will take on the winner of Saturday’s game between Aquinas Academy and Williamsburg in the second round Wednesday.
Everett 36, Rochester 35 – District 5 champion Everett (19-7) got past Rochester (17-9), the fifth seed out of the WPIAL, in the Class 2A first round. Everett will meet South Side in the second round Tuesday.
Kennedy Catholic 68, Fort Cherry 24 – Layke Fields scored 28 points, Tori Harvey followed with 14 and Monique Vincent added 12 to lead Kennedy Catholic (21-4) to a Class 2A first-round win. Raney Staub scored 16 points for Fort Cherry (19-8). The Golden Eagles will face Portage in Tuesday’s second round.
Marion Center 54, Winchester Thurston 33 – Macie Miller and Natalie Black scored 12 points apiece to lead District 6 champ Marion Center (21-5) in the Class 2A first round. Alexis Bansah scored 15 points and DaShae Cochran added 10 for Winchester Thurston (11-16). Marion Center will face Montrose in the second round.
Mercyhurst Prep 40, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 37 – District 10 champion Mercyhurst Prep (22-3) got past OLSH (17-10), the seventh seed out of the WPIAL, in the Class 3A first round to set up a meeting with Neshannock on Tuesday.
Neshannock 72, Chestnut Ridge 62 – Payton Newman led with 24 points, Jaidon Nogay followed with 20, and Kaitlyn Fries added 10 for Neshannock (19-8) in a Class 3A first-round win. Ashley Weaver scored 23 points for Chestnut Ridge (13-13). The Lancers will meet Mercyhurst Prep in Tuesday’s second round.
North Allegheny 57, Erie 23 – Caroline Henderson scored 19 points and Kellie McConnell and Grace Heliger added 11 points apiece to lead North Allegheny (23-3) to a Class 6A first-round win. Draya Neavilis scored 10 points for Erie (17-8). The Tigers will face North Penn in Tuesday’s second round.
Northwestern 67, Keystone Oaks 47 – Bailey Rieg sank six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points and Lainey Wagner dropped 12 points for Keystone Oaks (18-8) in a Class 3A opening-round loss. Northwestern (22-4) will play WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy in the second round Tuesday.
Peters Township 69, Lebanon 49 – Gemma Walker scored 30 points and Natalie Wetzel added 21 to lead Peters Township (24-2) to a Class 6A first-round win. Liliana Harrison scored 16 points and Olive Brandt had 14 for Lebanon (22-4). The Indians will meet Spring-Ford in Tuesday’s second round.
Portage 53, Aliquippa 41 – District 6 runner-up Portage (24-3) defeated Aliquippa (22-5) in a Class 2A first-round game to set up a matchup with District 10 champ Kennedy Catholic on Tuesday.
Seton LaSalle 66, Karns City 46 – Mallory Daly scored 25 points, Tiara Curry followed with 21 and Addie Lonergan added 16 to lead Seton LaSalle (16-10) to a Class 3A first-round win over the District 9 champs. Savanna Prescott scored 13 points and Brooklynn Taylor had 11 for Karns City (18-9). The Rebels will face Westmont Hilltop in Tuesday’s second round.
Shady Side Academy 55, River Valley 50 – Karis Thomas scored 27 points and Maggie Spell added 15 to lead WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy (25-2) to a Class 3A first-round win. The Bulldogs will meet District 10 runner-up Northwestern in the second round Tuesday. Ava Persichetti scored 27 points for River Valley (20-8).
South Side 34, Maplewood 33 – South Side (16-11), the Cinderella of the WPIAL Class 2A bracket, was at it again in the PIAA first round, knocking off District 10 runner-up Maplewood (21-5). The Rams will meet District 5 champ Everett in the second round Tuesday.
Westmont Hilltop 57, Beaver Falls 36 – Beth Buettner scored 19 points to lead Westmont Hilltop (20-4) in the Class 3A first round. Avina Norman scored 24 for Beaver Falls (16-9). Westmont Hilltop will take on Seton LaSalle in the second round Tuesday.
