High school roundup for May 20, 2024: Mt. Lebanon’s David Shields, North Allegheny’s David Posey pitch teams into semifinals

David Shields threw a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to lead No. 1 Mt. Lebanon to a 5-0 victory over No. 8 Butler in the WPIAL Class 6A baseball quarterfinals Monday.

Graham Keen and Nate Girod doubled and drove in a run apiece for the Blue Devils (17-4), who will meet No. 5 Seneca Valley in Tuesday’s semifinals. Carson Bish and Mavrik Clement each hit a single for the Golden Tornado (6-13).

North Allegheny 3, Norwin 0 – David Posey allowed one hit in six innings, struck out 10, doubled and drove in two runs for No. 3 North Allegheny (15-5) in a Class 6A quarterfinal win. Miles Pealer hit two singles for the Tigers, who will meet No. 2 Pine-Richland in the semifinals on Tuesday. Nate Silberman’s infield single in the third inning was the only hit for No. 6 Norwin (11-10). The Knights walked twice to load the bases in that inning, but Posey retired the side.

Avella 6, Fort Cherry 3 – Brayden Fuller singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Bryce Wright was the winning pitcher, giving up five hits in 6 ⅓ innings, for No. 6 Avella (11-5) in a Class A quarterfinals. Cole Jaworowski also drove in a run for the Eagles, who will face No. 2 Eden Christian in Tuesday’s semifinals. Ryan Huey doubled and drove in a run for No. 3 Fort Cherry (12-3).

Avonworth 5, East Allegheny 4 – Mason Metz hit a bases-clearing triple and Cooper Scharding followed with a two-run homer in a five-run first inning to lead No. 7 Avonworth (14-8) to a Class 3A quarterfinal win. Luke Zelinko doubled for the Antelopes, who will face No. 14 Burrell in the semifinals Tuesday. Joe Connors singled, doubled and drove in three runs for No. 15 East Allegheny (13-6).

Bishop Canevin 10, Western Beaver 0 – Jackson Maddix threw a six-inning no-hitter and struck out 13 to lead No. 4 Bishop Canevin (13-4) to a Class A quarterfinal win over No. 5 Western Beaver (10-8). Quentin White doubled and drove in four runs and Dom Varley drove in two runs for the Crusaders, who will face No. 8 Carmichaels in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Burgettstown 3, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 – Winning pitcher Eric Kovach struck out 13 in 5⅔ innings and Brodie Kuzior fanned four in 1⅓ innings to earn the save as No. 4 Burgettstown (13-3-1) won a Class 2A quarterfinal. Sam Elich doubled and drove in a run for the Blue Devils, who will meet No. 1 Serra Catholic in the semifinals Tuesday. Anthony Grippo went 2 for 2 with two walks and hard-luck losing pitcher Tyler Samide allowed three runs, none earned, in six innings for No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (12-5). He struck out seven.

Carmichaels 3, Union 1 – Liam Lohr threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout and struck out seven to lead No. 8 Carmichaels (13-4) to a Class A quarterfinal win. Robbie Wilson-Jones and Colin Andrews drove in a run apiece for the Mighty Mikes, who will face No. 4 Bishop Canevin in the semifinals Tuesday. Mike Gunn singled and doubled for No. 1 Union (13-4).

Eden Christian 5, West Greene 0 – Enzo Natale struck out 16 and allowed two hits in 6⅓ innings to lead No. 2 Eden Christian (15-4) to a Class A quarterfinal win. Brady Hull went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Noah Emswiler hit two doubles and drove in two runs for the Warriors, who will meet No. 6 Avella in Tuesday’s semifinals. Reece Tharp doubled for No. 7 West Greene (12-6).

Indiana 5, Blackhawk 0 – Tim Birch hit a single and double and Hunter Martin drove in two runs for No. 9 Indiana (11-9) in a Class 4A quarterfinal win over No. 16 Blackhawk (8-11). Winning pitcher Greg Minnick struck out seven in 4⅔ innings for the Indians, who will face No. 4 Montour in Tuesday’s semifinals.

North Catholic 4, West Mifflin 0 – Thomas Schafale threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout and struck out six for No. 6 North Catholic (15-4) in a Class 4A quarterfinal win. Josef Safar went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs and Ryan Shantz hit a single and triple for the Trojans, who will meet No. 2 Thomas Jefferson in Tuesday’s semifinals. Jayvon Thompson tripled for No. 3 West Mifflin (17-3).

Obama Academy 6, Carrick 3 – Clark Ehman went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI and Simon Moak was the winning pitcher, scattering 12 hits and giving up three runs in a complete game, as Obama Academy (9-6) won the City League championship game. Evan Allen singled and drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles. Remy Atkins went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored and Eli Wittman singled, doubled and drove in a pair for Carrick.

Pine-Richland 4, Central Catholic 1 – Peyton Ford hit the go-ahead two-run single during a four-run sixth inning to lead No. 2 Pine-Richland (17-4) in the Class 6A quarterfinals. Keegan Diehl allowed one run on five hits in 6⅓ innings to earn the win and Tyler Vogel got the final two outs for the save for the Rams, who will take on No. 3 North Allegheny in the semifinals Tuesday. Gavin Kelly singled and doubled and CJ Proch drove in a run for No. 7 Central Catholic (10-11).

Riverside 11, South Park 1 – Christian Lucarelli allowed two hits and struck out seven in five innings for No. 1 Riverside (15-1) in a Class 3A quarterfinal win over No. 9 South Park (13-8). Sam Barber went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs and Darren McDade doubled and drove in three runs for the Panthers, who will face No. 4 South Allegheny in the semifinals Tuesday.

Serra Catholic 9, Laurel 1 – Tyler Skaggs struck out nine and Zach Black hit two singles and drove in three runs to lead No. 1 Serra Catholic (16-1) to a Class 2A quarterfinal win. Colin Holmes drove in two runs and Owen Dumbrosky hit three singles for the Eagles, who will face No. 4 Burgettstown in the semifinals Tuesday. Kolton Carlson went 3 for 3 for No. 8 Laurel (12-9).

Seton LaSalle 10, Chartiers-Houston 1 – Aric White tripled and drove in two runs and Michael Todd hit a single and double for No. 3 Seton LaSalle (15-3) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Josh Burkholder had two RBIs and Connor Rothhaar had two hits and an RBI for the Rebels, who will take on No. 2 OLSH in the semifinals Tuesday. Anthony Romano singled and drove in a run for No. 6 Chartiers-Houston (10-9).

South Allegheny 2, Shenango 0 – Trenton Popovich threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout and struck out six to lead No. 4 South Allegheny (17-4) to a Class 3A quarterfinal win. Adam Jackowski and Ryan Cortes each doubled for the Gladiators, who will meet No. 1 Riverside in Tuesday’s semifinals. Jason Malley singled and doubled for No. 12 Shenango (11-10).

Thomas Jefferson 4, Chartiers Valley 3 – Noah Kaszer doubled and scored on Tyler Lesko walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for No. 2 Thomas Jefferson (19-2) in a Class 4A quarterfinal win. Brady McGough went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Jaguars, who will face No. 6 North Catholic in Tuesday’s semifinals. Colton Koza doubled and drove in two runs for No. 7 Chartiers Valley (12-7).

Softball

West Greene 13, Frazier 5 – Payton Gilbert drove in four runs and Ali Goodwin doubled to lead No. 5 West Greene (13-6) to a Class A quarterfinal win. Madelyn Roberts hit two singles and drove in two runs for the Pioneers, who will meet No. 1 Union in Wednesday’s semifinals. Grace Vaughn went 3 for 4 with two doubles and Emilia Bednar singled, doubled and drove in two runs for No. 4 Frazier (13-1).

Boys lacrosse

South Fayette 17, Penn-Trafford 4 – Owen Makar scored six goals, Drew Welhorsky added four and Bryce Watkins had three to lead No. 2 South Fayette (18-1) to a Class 2A semifinal victory. The Lions will meet No. 1 Mars (16-3), a 13-0 winner over No. 4 Hampton (11-7), in the finals at Robert Morris at a date and time to be announced. No. 3 Penn-Trafford (15-5) will meet Hampton for third place.

In the 3A bracket, No. 4 North Allegheny (14-6) knocked off No. 1 Shady Side Academy (12-7), 9-6, and No. 2 Mt. Lebanon (15-4) took care of No. 3 Upper St. Clair (13-4), 21-9.

Girls lacrosse

Pine-Richland 15, Upper St. Clair 9 – Mada Mill scored four goals and Cate Gentile and Mallory Boivin added three goals apiece to lead No. 2 Pine-Richland (16-1) to a Class 3A semifinal win over No. 3 Upper St. Clair (12-6). The Rams will meet No. 1 Mt. Lebanon (15-4), a 13-10 winner over No. 5 Shady Side Academy (12-5) on Monday.

In the Class 2A bracket, No. 1 Mars (16-2) defeated No. 4 Penn-Trafford (16-3), 15-5, and No. 3 Chartiers Valley (16-2) got past No. 7 South Fayette (13-7), 8-7 in overtime.
