High school roundup for May 8, 2024: Woodland Hills baseball ends 58-game losing streak

DeVaughn Earl-Hayden pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts as Woodland Hills ended a 58-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over Steel Valley (4-12) in nonsection baseball Wednesday.

The Wolverines’ last victory was March 26, 2021, a 6-1 win over Carrick. Nate Scott had a triple and an RBI, Aaron Concepcion went 3 for 3 with a double and Trayvon Marshman doubled and plated a pair for the Wolverines (1-14).

Bentworth 4, Avella 1 – Lucas Burt was the winning pitcher with 11 strikeouts and Jacob Burt picked up the save as Bentworth (4-11) topped Avella (9-5) in a nonsection game. Gavin Linton-Rush and Ben Hays had two hits apiece for the Bearcats.

Bethel Park 10, Chartiers Valley 0 – Ryan Petras went 3 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs and Bethel Park (12-6-1) earned a nonsection win. Dylan Paul singled, doubled and drove in three runs for the Black Hawks and Dylan Schumacher and Ryan Walsh combined to pitch a three-hitter over five innings. Nate Magilson had two hits for Chartiers Valley (11-6).

Bishop Canevin 10, Greensburg Central Catholic 5 – Bishop Canevin (12-4) scored nine runs in the top of the third to erase an early 5-0 deficit on its way to a nonsection win. Jackson Maddix had a triple and three RBIs and Kole Olszewski doubled and drove in two for the Crusaders. Jackson McMullen hit a three-run homer for Greensburg Central Catholic (11-4).

Connellsville 5, Baldwin 3 – Anthony Piasecki and Jonathan Kelly singled, doubled and had an RBI to pace Connellsville (11-9) in a nonsection victory. Matt Musial singled twice and drove in a run for Baldwin (1-19).

Highlands 17, Springdale 1 – Carson Goldberg went 4 for 4 with three doubles, drove in three runs and was the winning pitcher with 11 strikeouts to lead Highlands (3-15) to a nonsection win. Sal Barbarino singled and had three RBIs and Aaron Randolph tripled and drove in a pair for the Golden Rams. Kristian Kocon and Carson McGraw added a double and two RBIs each. Colby Muller and Andrew Redman singled for Springdale (5-9).

Indiana 4, Obama Academy 2 – Tristan Redinger doubled and Ryan Okopal was the winning pitcher for Indiana (9-9) in a nonsection victory. Chad Helwich doubled and drove in two runs for Obama Academy (5-6).

North Allegheny 4, Shaler 3 – JJ Mancuso hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth as North Allegheny (14-5) walked it off against Shaler (15-5) in nonsection play. Miles Pealer smashed a two-run double and David Posey struck out four in four innings for the win. Brady McGuire doubled and Chase Beran drove in a run for the Titans.

North Catholic 8, Armstrong 5 – Anthony Sewecke singled three times and Ryan Shantz and Blake Primrose drove in two runs each for North Catholic (13-4) in a nonsection win. Chase Jablonski singled three times and had an RBI and Brayden Wright singled, doubled and had three RBIs for Armstrong (7-10).

North Hills 4, Seneca Valley 3 – Nicholas Strother knocked in two runs and Jake Pollaro went 2 for 3 with an RBI as North Hills (11-4-1) scored an unearned run in the seventh for a walk-off nonsection win. Creed Erdos and Tyler McNanny each brought in a run for Seneca Valley (10-8-1). Ben Barr struck out four in three innings for the Indians.

Plum 10, Hempfield 6 – Erik Streussnig went 4 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBIs to lead Plum (13-7) to a win in a nonsection game. Max Vollmer and Dom Beyer added a hit and two RBIs each for the Mustangs. Adam Hess had a pair of hits and RBIs for Hempfield (14-6).

Washington 11, Winchester Thurston 8 – William Callan had three hits and six RBIs and Ayvari Chandler homered and had a pair of RBIs to help Washington (9-9) pick up a nonsection win. Austin Lenhart-Barley hit an RBI triple for Winchester Thurston.

West Allegheny 5, Montour 3 – Logan Lambert went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and Derek Curry knocked in a run while Brandon Boyce picked up a win and Will Gubba got a save for West Allegheny (14-3) in a nonsection win. Andrew Porto doubled twice and drove in a run for Montour (13-4).

West Mifflin 6, Peters Township 3 – James Moneck drove in a pair of runs and Corey Kuszaj went 2 for 4 with a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the fifth as West Mifflin (16-2) beat Peters Township (8-12) in a nonsection matchup. Will Somers belted a two-run double and Charles Taylor finished 2 for 3 with an RBI for Peters (8-12). Justin Dillon got the win for the Titans.

Softball

Avella 11, Northgate 9 – Avrey Rado tossed a complete game and struck out nine and Emma Johnson went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs as Avella (7-13) edged out Northgate (6-9) in nonsection play. Gracie Auth doubled twice and knocked in two runs and Cassandra Tadda doubled and had three RBIs as Johna Abramowicz fanned 13 in seven innings for the Flames.

Baldwin 8, Butler 3 – Kaylee Smolko launched a two-run homer, Gabby Jaquay tripled, doubled and knocked in two runs, and winning pitcher Anna Schumacher doubled in a run for Baldwin (7-11, 6-10) in a Section 1-6A win. Gracie Negley belted a two-run home run for Butler (3-14, 2-14).

Bethel Park 7, Seton LaSalle 0 – Belinda Bova went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Anna Duguid brought home a pair of runs and Makenzie Wade picked up a win as Bethel Park (10-9) beat Seton LaSalle (4-10) in nonsection play. Cassidy Baxendell doubled for the Rebels.

Burgettstown 15, Freedom 0 – Madelina Guiddy went 2 for 2 with four RBIs, Emma McGregor was 3 for 3 and drove in three, and Layla Sherman got a win for Burgettstown (9-11) in a nonsection victory against Freedom (4-10). Camryn Reddinger tripled and knocked in a run for the Blue Devils.

Canon-McMillan 8, Trinity 4 – Kiersten Williams belted two home runs and knocked in four runs while Morgan Doyle and Lyla Mowery each collected two hits as Canon-McMillan (7-11) defeated Trinity (11-6) in nonsection play. Remmie Seitz hit an RBI double for the Hillers.

Carlynton 12, Bishop Canevin 2 – Kyla Morris singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Danica DeCecco had two hits and an RBI to lead Carlynton (8-10) to a nonsection win. Amari Elliott had two hits and a double and Cameran Lokaitis had two hits and an RBI for Bishop Canevin (4-11).

Central Valley 10, Blackhawk 3 – Nadia Ehle hit a three-run homer, Emma Weaver crushed a solo home run and winning pitcher Abigale Stewart went 3 for 4 with an RBI as Central Valley (11-2) cruised to a nonsection win. Hannah Nolte smashed a two-run double for Blackhawk (7-7).

Chartiers-Houston 8, Serra Catholic 0 – Meadow Ferri struck out 12 in a one-hit complete game shutout to lead Chartiers-Houston (14-2) to a nonsection victory. Zaylee Fonner and Taryne Drilak each went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Buccaneers. Maria Goldstein had the lone hit for Serra Catholic (11-4).

Ellwood City 8, Moniteau 1 – Winning pitcher Amber McQuiston struck out 10 in a complete game to lead Ellwood City (14-4) to a nonsection win. Sara Schwarz doubled and drove in a pair of runs and Lena Lucarelli went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Wolverines.

Frazier 3, Uniontown 1 – Jayanna Ciferno knocked in a pair of runs and Addison Hiles picked up a win as Frazier (13-0) beat Uniontown (8-6) in nonsection play. Graci Rodeheaver drove in the lone Red Raiders run.

Greensburg Central Catholic 13, Leechburg 2 – Makenzee Kenney went 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles, a pair of triples and six RBIs and Grace Kindel tripled, doubled and knocked in three runs to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (7-6) to a nonsection win. Ava Ferretti drove in a run and Danica Sopcak tripled for Leechburg (8-9). Abigail Dei got the win for the Centurions.

Hampton 14, Highlands 0 – Katelyn Dubee went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, Teresa Fritsch knocked in three runs and Aliza Michielli doubled and had two RBIs as Hampton (15-3) blanked Highlands (3-13) in nonsection play. Lexi Bender and Carrah Scardina each doubled for the Golden Rams. Cassie Vidic got the win for the Talbots.

Hempfield 4, Latrobe 1 – Reagan Reamer hit a three-run double and Abigail Magill drove in a run as Hempfield (18-1) scored all its runs in the sixth to defeat Latrobe (9-10) in nonsection play. Kayla Williams doubled in a run and struck out 10 in a complete game effort for the Wildcats. Winning pitcher Julia Varhola fanned eight and Riley Miller struck out five in two innings for the Spartans.

Hopewell 8, Riverside 4 – Chloe Nale went 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, Lillian Statler and Victoria Mann each doubled and knocked in a run, and Allison Ramaley got the win for Hopewell (7-11) in a nonsection matchup. Ainslee Freshcorn doubled and drove in a run for Riverside (6-9).

Keystone Oaks 3, Steel Valley 2 – Addisyn Schmid doubled twice and drove in a run and winning pitcher Kennadi Smith knocked in a run as Keystone Oaks (8-9) bested Steel Valley (6-10) in a nonsection contest. Isabella Ruston went 2 for 4 with an RBI for Steel Valley.

Knoch 11, Deer Lakes 0 – Marlee Fraser struck out nine and allowed one hit in six innings to lead Knoch (13-6) to a nonsection shutout victory. Fraser and Alena Tekely each went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs for the Knights. Avery Rethage had the only base hit for Deer Lakes (9-10).

Laurel 9, North Hills 4 – Winning pitcher Addie Deal went 3 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs while Ivy Pancher hit a solo home run and doubled and Lexi Sherry slugged a two-run homer as Laurel (16-4) hammered North Hills (13-4) in nonsection play. Abigail Sutton smashed a two-run homer and Savannah Bodnar went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Indians. Autumn Boyd finished with three RBIs for the Spartans.

Mapletown 6, Beth-Center 3 – Treslee Weston doubled and drove in three runs, Marley Shiflett knocked in a run, and Devan Clark pitched a complete game and struck out eight as Mapletown (5-10) doubled up Beth-Center (6-8) in nonsection play. Kendall Welsh went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Mohawk 11, West Middlesex 3 – Aricka Young doubled and drove in three runs, Maya McGreal and Gianna Pezzuolo each knocked in a pair of runs and Carmela Johnson brought home a run for Mohawk (14-5) in a nonsection win over West Middlesex. Reagan Magno picked up a win for the Spartans.

Mt. Lebanon 6, Upper St. Clair 2 – Olivia Park knocked in three runs and winning pitcher Gabby Boone went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles as Mt. Lebanon (2-17) beat Upper St. Clair (7-10) in a nonsection matchup. Caroline Barnard doubled and drove in two runs for the Panthers.

Penn Hills 4, McKeesport 3 – Isabella DeCarlo threw a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and went 3 for 4 to lead Penn Hills (6-9) to a nonsection win over McKeesport (7-10). Lauren Sipple doubled for the Indians.

Penn-Trafford 2, North Allegheny 1 – Isabella Rubbe and Ella Mains doubled, Cameron Ponko went 2 for 3 and Allyson Paulone got the win for Penn-Trafford (12-5) in a nonsection victory against North Allegheny (12-6). Sammy Plotsko went 2 for 3 with a solo homer for the Tigers.

Pine-Richland 11, Armstrong 6 – Iliana Aggelou and Jocelyn Langer each doubled and drove in two runs and Abbey Laurent brought in a pair as Pine-Richland (11-9) toppled Armstrong (14-3) in nonsection play. Emma Paul and Jessica Pugh each drove in a run for the River Hawks. Mia Maiola picked up a win for the Rams.

Plum 10, Burrell 0 – Riley Stephans struck out six, gave up one hit in five innings and went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead Plum (11-6) to a nonsection shutout win. Danielle Pici homered, slapped a pair of doubles and drove in four runs while Liana Yusko knocked in two runs and hit three doubles for the Mustangs. Sabrina Hoover doubled for Burrell (10-7).

Seneca Valley 12, Shaler 1 – Winning pitcher Lexie Hames went 2 for 2 with a home run and brought in four runs and struck out five in three innings for Seneca Valley (19-1) in a nonsection win. Olivia Herrem smashed a solo homer while Abby Kalkowski tripled, doubled and drove in a run while tossing three shutout innings for a save for the Raiders. Alyssa Schaffold singled and drove in a run for Shaler (14-3).

Shenango 9, Beaver 8 – Kennedi Lynn had three hits and four RBIs and struck out eight in 5⅓ innings in the circle to lead Shenango (10-7) to a nonsection win. Brianna Aluisa had four hits and an RBI and Mackenna Emerick doubled and drove in two for the Wildcats. Sami Springmanhad two singles, a double and two RBIs for Beaver (3-14).

South Fayette 11, McKeesport 1 – Maddie Cavenaugh went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Emma Smith doubled and drove in three runs and Stephanie Binek struck out six as South Fayette (11-5) rolled to a nonsection win. Jessica Miller hit a solo home run for McKeesport (7-9).

South Park 11, Ringgold 0 – Sydney Sekely went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Reese Katich struck out six in 3⅔ innings in the circle to lead South Park (16-1) to a nonsection win over Ringgold (2-14). Ally Wilder had two hits and two RBIs and Kylie Mettrick had three hits and a pair of RBIs for the Eagles.

Union 6, West Allegheny 3 – Addie Nogay crushed two home runs, including a three-run shot in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and lead Union (18-1) to a nonsection win. Winning pitcher Mia Preuhs struck out 14 for the Scotties. Aubrey Police and Savanna Benish each doubled for West Allegheny (16-2).

Waynesburg 7, Gateway 1 – Gina Tedrow struck out 19 hitters and yielded one run as Waynesburg (7-11) beat Gateway (1-16) in nonsection play. Aidan Snider smacked a two-run double and Avery Davis tripled for the Raiders. Samantha Robi tripled in the only run for the Gators.

Boys lacrosse

Plum 10, Sewickley Academy 7 – Caden Anderson scored four goals and Connor Silliman followed with three to lead Plum to a Section 2-2A victory. Brody Howell, Dom Colamarino and Shane Jenkins also scored for the Mustangs.

Girls lacrosse

Blackhawk 20, South Fayette 6 – Mia Piocquidio tied her record for most goals in a game with 10 while Chloe Hustin, Lauren Fair and Ryleigh McKnight each scored a pair of goals as Blackhawk (14-2, 9-2) rolled to a Section 2-2A win over South Fayette (11-6, 8-3). Andrea Kinger, Ava Pagani, Tori Ceriani and Mia Sheesley each added a goal for the Cougars.

Hampton 15, Winchester Thurston 4 – Sienna Rex buried five goals and Lindsay Fiscus recorded a hat trick to lead Hampton (7-9, 7-4) to a Section 1-2A win over Winchester Thurston (5-6, 5-6).

Upper St. Clair 12, Norwin 9 – Kat Mammarella scored four goals and Anna Capobres added three to lead Upper St. Clair to a Section 1-3A win. Katie Sweeney and Mea Musillo each had two goals and an assist and Calla Dressler also scored for the Panthers.
