High school roundup for May 9, 2019: Franklin Regional shuts out Penn-Trafford

Franklin Regional ensured it will enter the WPIAL baseball playoffs with momentum Thursday.

The Class 5A No. 2 Panthers scored twice in the first inning and held on for a 2-0 victory over Class 6A No. 1 Penn-Trafford (16-3) in a nonsection game.

It was the 13th straight win for the Panthers (16-1). Bryce Harper had an RBI, and Mike Klingensmith and Zach Seaman each had two hits.

Altoona 5, Latrobe 0 — Connor Mondock was 2 for 3 for Latrobe (8-12) as the Wildcats dropped a nonsection game.

Hempfield 5, Laurel Highlands 4Hempfield (11-9) scored four runs in the fifth inning en route to a nonsection victory. Reed Hipps tripled in three runs, and Luke Hudson and Aiden Dunlap also had an RBI.

Blackhawk 4, Mars 3 (8 inn.) — Ray Knally tripled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to lift Blackhawk (13-4) to a nonsection win.

Canon-McMillan 7, Butler 4 — Winning pitcher Nick Popielarcyzk tripled in two runs to help Canon-McMillan (10-9) win a nonsection game.

Chartiers-Houston 9, Vincentian Academy 8 — Jimmy Sadler was 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs, and Dustin Weister knocked in three runs to help Chartiers-Houston (13-4) win a nonsection game.

Chartiers Valley 3, Carrick 0 — Jason Orzechowski scattered seven hits and struck out nine in a nonsection win for Chartiers Valley (4-14).

Eden Christian Academy 4, Northgate 3 — Luke Vittone and Markus Williams knocked in runs to help Eden Christian (10-8) win a nonsection matchup.

Peters Township 2, South Park 0 — Dax Ploskina and Matthew Levy had RBI singles as Peters Township (13-6) won a nonsection game.

Seneca Valley 3, South Fayette 2 (8 inn.) — Mark Trotta drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to give Seneca Valley (12-6) a nonsection win.

Serra Catholic 14, North Catholic 0 (5 inn.) — Mark Black was 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs as Serra Catholic (17-2) won a nonsection game.

Waynesburg 6, Albert Gallatin 1 — Luke Robinson had two doubles and an RBI, and Trevor Stephenson knocked in a run as Waynesburg (11-5) won a nonsection matchup.

West Allegheny 6, Steel Valley 2 – Gavin Miller tripled in two runs, and Austin Hendrick, Cameron Pankyo-Morris and Mason Timko also tripled as Class 5A No. 1 West Allegheny (18-2) won a nonsection game.

Fox Chapel 2, Shaler 1 — Matt Jerpe’s two-out single scored Mitch Miles from third base as Fox Chapel closed the regular season in walk-off fashion over nonsection foe Shaler. Miles picked up the win from the hill for Fox Chapel (10-7). Miles and James Patterson singled and doubled for the Foxes.

Zach Hernon got the loss for Shaler (11-7).

Valley 5, East Allegheny 0 — Starting pitcher Matteo Vergerio gave up one hit through 323 innings to help guide Valley into the offseason on a high note with the Section 1-3A win over East Allegheny (1-14, 1-11).

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Valley (5-12, 4-8). Javon Keys singled twice and knocked in two runs, and Evan Henry singled, doubled and added an RBI.

Pitcher Garrett Simonetta took the loss for the Wildcats.

Softball

Montour 12, Hampton 10 — Lindsey Penz was 3 for 4 with four RBIs as Montour (9-8) won a nonsection game.

Seneca Valley 15, Blackhawk 4 (4 inn.) — Claire Zimmerman threw a no-hitter with two strikeouts for Seneca Valley (14-5) in a nonsection game.

Serra Catholic 6, Bishop Canevin 4 — Kaitlyn Conard and Chloe Honick each knocked in two runs to help Serra Catholic (10-4) win a nonsection game.

South Park 4, North Hills 3 — Winning pitcher Jess Dean was 3 for 4 with a double, helping South Park (13-4) win a nonsection game.

Monessen 13, Beth-Center 5 — Kendelle Weston doubled, tripled and had four RBIs, and Sasha Kenney, Loni Scott and Mattie Telegraphis all had two hits as Monessen (6-9) won in nonsection play.

Norwin 14, Franklin Regional 2 — Victoria Shimko, Alexandra Brentzel, Bailee Bertani and Sara Russell all homered to help Norwin (12-7) win a nonsection game. Mallory Hallock had an RBI for Franklin Regional (11-7).

Ligonier Valley 14, Homer-Center 0 (5 inn.) — Jane Garver threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts to help Ligonier Valley (16-2, 10-0) win a District 6 Heritage Conference game. Bella Vargulish had three RBIs, and Taylor Bojtos and Courtney McKlveen each knocked in two runs.
