High school roundup for Nov. 1, 2023: Montour, Burrell, Shady Side Academy make states

Jaxon Camp scored a pair of second-half goals to break open a tie game and send fifth-seeded Montour to the state tournament with a 3-1 victory over No. 11 Franklin Regional in the WPIAL Class 3A third-place match Wednesday night.

Jovan Sankoorikal scored a first-half goal to give the Panthers (12-9) an early lead. Dom Passaro tied the score later in the half for the Spartans (16-4).

Parker Brennan had a pair of assists and Andrew Prunier also set up a goal for Montour, which will meet the District 8 or 10 champion in the first round of the PIAA tournament Tuesday.

Burrell 1, Seton LaSalle 0 – Jayson Ireland scored the game-winning goal, assisted by Hadyn Herbulock, as third-seeded Burrell secured a spot in the state tournament with a victory over fourth-seeded Seton LaSalle (15-4-1) in the Class A third-place match. Ryan Croushore recorded the shutout for the Bucs (15-4), who will face the District 9 champions in the PIAA first round Tuesday.

Shady Side Academy 1, Avonworth 0 – Drew McKim scored the decisive goal as No. 6 Shady Side Academy (15-5-1) claimed a berth in the PIAA field with a victory over No. 4 Avonworth (16-4-1) in the Class 2A third-place match. The Bulldogs will face the District 10 champion in the first round of the state tournament Tuesday.

Girls volleyball

Canon-McMillan 3, Seneca Valley 0 – Natalie Carr had 11 kills and seven digs to lead third-seeded Canon-McMillan (15-3) to a 26-24, 25-18, 25-21 victory over No. 2 Seneca Valley (12-4) in the Class 4A semifinals.

Cali Dagen added eight kills, Olivia Gross had 12 assists and four kills and Julia Murdy and Sophia Powell recorded 11 digs apiece for the Big Macs, who will face top-seeded North Allegheny in the championship match Saturday at Peters Township. Josie Carter contributed 11 assists and nine digs, Abby Tucker had four kills and four blocks and Brooke Peters served up three aces.

Hampton 3, Thomas Jefferson 0 – Top-seeded Hampton (21-0) swept its way into the WPIAL finals with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-22 victory over No. 4 Thomas Jefferson (17-2) in the Class 3A semifinals. The Talbots will take on No. 2 North Catholic in the finals Saturday.

North Catholic 3, Oakland Catholic 1 – Second-seeded North Catholic (18-1) dropped the first set then took the next three sets to secure a 21-25, 27-25, 25-13, 25-21 victory over No. 3 Oakland Catholic (15-4) in the Class 3A semifinals. North Catholic will take on No. 1 Hampton in the finals Saturday at Peters Township.
