High school roundup for Oct. 16, 2023: Mt. Lebanon claims final girls soccer playoff spot in 4A

Lucy Pryor scored the winning goal as Mt. Lebanon claimed the final playoff spot in the WPIAL Class 4A girls soccer field with a 1-0 victory over Bethel Park on Monday. The Blue Devils (10-5-2, 8-4-2) finished tied with Canon-McMillan for third place in Section 2. The Black Hawks (9-7-1, 7-7) finished fifth.
Bentworth 4, Beth-Center 0 – Emily Kisner, Megan Keturakis, Cassidy Sicchitano and Meredith Allender scored in a Bentworth (8-7-1, 5-6-1) Section 2-A win over Beth-Center (3-12, 1-11). Nita Anderson earned the shutout for the Bearcats.
Burrell 12, Valley 0 – McKenna Miller, Kierra Smalling and Carmen Bires scored two goals apiece to lead Burrell (11-4, 7-2) to a Section 2-2A win over Valley (1-11-1, 1-10). Addy Richter, Miley Kariotis, Andi Householder, Tessa Mathabel, Bella Sworts and Leah Waldsmith also scored.
Canon-McMillan 2, Baldwin 0 – Sarah Warzinski had a goal and an assist and Ella Shields also scored for Canon-McMillan (8-6-2, 8-4-2) in a section 2-4A win over Baldwin (6-12, 2-12).
Charleroi 5, Monessen 1 – McKenna DeUnger scored four goals and Bella Carroto added another to lead Charleroi (14-1, 11-1) to a Section 2-A win. Sam Saylor scored for Monessen (4-11-1, 1-10-1). DeUnger’s four goals puts her at 97 for her career.
Deer Lakes 2, Knoch 1 – Claire Cacurak scored both goals for Deer Lakes (9-6-2, 6-4) in a Section 2-2A victory over Knoch (8-6-2, 5-4-1). Brooke Galcik scored for the Knights.
Elizabeth Forward 5, Belle Vernon 0 – Brooklyn Baldensperger and Leilana Speney scored two goals each and Giovanna Ferraro added a goal for Elizabeth Forward (13-3, 12-2) in a Section 2-3A win over Belle Vernon (7-9-1, 6-7-1). With the loss, the Leopards were eliminated from postseason contention, giving Laurel Highlands (8-8, 7-7) the final playoff berth from the section.
Franklin Regional 5, Penn Hills 0 – Abby Paterline scored a hat trick and Allyssa Velasquez and Shaeley Reighbaum each added a goal for Franklin Regional (11-5-1, 8-4) in a Section 3-3A win against Penn Hills (4-11, 1-11).
Greensburg Salem 4, Southmoreland 0 – Olivia Smith, Tienna Ventura, Taylor Carr and Kayla Ramer scored and Alice Wilkinson kept a clean sheet as Greensburg Salem (3-12-2) beat Southmoreland (9-5) in nonsection play.
Indiana 2, Kiski Area 0 – Mae Turner and Sydney Anderson scored and Isabella Antonacci recorded the shtuout as Indiana (5-11, 4-8) blanked Kiski Area (7-9-2, 5-5-2) in Section 1-3A.
Latrobe 4, Gateway 0 – Annalyse Bauer scored twice, Ava Yurko netted a goal and Robin Reilly collected a goal and had two assists as Latrobe (12-2, 10-2) beat Gateway (4-9-2, 3-8-1) in Section 3-3A. Corinne Brunetto recorded the shutout for the Wildcats.
Mars 7, Obama Academy 0 – Lily Wolf, Meredith Ashbaugh, Addi Girdwood, Kayleigh Clark, Liv Halliday, Alexa Werner and Lil Goodworth scored to lead Mars (14-0, 12-0) to a Section 1-3A win over Obama Academy (1-14, 0-11).
Montour 3, West Allegheny 0 – Riley Hall and Mia and Marlo Cyanovich had a goal apiece and Grace Bannon had two assists for Montour (12-2-3, 9-2-1) in a Section 4-3A defeat of West Allegheny (10-7, 6-6).
North Allegheny 1, Seneca Valley 0 – Abigail Stager scored the winning goal and Natalie Rak recorded the shutout as North Allegheny (17-0, 14-0) finished undefeated in Section 1-4A with a win over Seneca Valley (13-2-1, 11-2-1).
North Catholic 4, Beaver 0 – Simone Sharpless had a goal and an assist and Rylee Kumer recorded the shutout as North Catholic (13-2, 11-1) beat Beaver (8-6-1, 6-5-1) in Section 1-2A. Kenzie DeBlassio, Gillian Kennedy and Kathleen Virostek also scored.
Peters Township 10, Hempfield 0 – Cam Klein recorded a hat trick and Julia Spergel scored a pair of goals for Peters Township (14-1-2, 12-1-2) in a Section 2-4A win over Hempfield (1-16, 0-14). Jordan Klein, Atleigh Ciprich, Cailin Martin, Grace O’Korn and Mia Helbig also scored for Peters.
Plum 3, Penn-Trafford 1 – Gianna Revetta and Olivia Bigger scored as Plum (15-0-1, 12-0) wrapped up an unbeaten regular season with a Section 3-3A win. Emilie Oslosky scored for Penn-Trafford (11-6, 6-6).
Seton LaSalle 9, Steel Valley 0 – Sydney Towers and Sydney Morgan both had a hat trick to help Seton LaSalle (9-7, 6-6) blank Steel Valley (2-15-1, 2-14-1) in Section 1-A.
South Park 2, Winchester Thurston 0 – Brooke Paylo and Aubrey Tabak scored for South Park (13-4) in a nonsection win over Winchester Thurston (10-2).
Thomas Jefferson 9, Ringgold 0 – Olivia Della Lucia, Natalie Lamenza, Sami Maglicco and Aubrey Little had two goals apiece and Cece Wessel also scored to lead Thomas Jefferson (15-1, 14-0) past Ringgold (5-11-2, 4-9-1) in Section 2-3A.
Upper St. Clair 7, Norwin 2 – Sierra Dupre had a hat trick and Mary Mascaro, Valentina Sobarzo, Meredith Huzjak and Chloe Bird scored a goal apiece to lead Upper St. Clair (15-1, 13-1) to a Section 2-4A win over Norwin (4-13, 4-10).
Waynesburg 1, South Allegheny 0 (OT) – Ella Miller scored off a feed from Lake Litwinovich to give Waynesburg (11-4, 8-4) the Section 2-1A win over South Allegheny (11-7, 6-6). Peyton Cowell kept a clean sheet for the Raiders.

Hopewell 4, Freedom 0 — Chris Colonna had a hat trick for Hopewell (9-6) in a nonsection win over Freedom (6-9).
Keystone Oaks 1, Serra Catholic 0 – Justin Lia scored the lone goal for Keystone Oaks (11-5) in a nonsection win over Serra Catholic (12-4).
Ligonier Valley 5, Berlin Brothersvalley 0 – Matthew Salancy and Hunter Wright scored two goals apiece and Derek Street added a goal to lead Ligonier Valley (5-10-1) to a nonsection win over Berlin Brothersvalley (2-14-1).
Moon 11, Chartiers Valley 0 – Davi Jansson recorded a hat trick, Billy Sprott, Josue Lara and Luiz Silva each scored a pair of goals and Shak Otabekov and Vinnie Munizza chipped in a goal apiece as Moon (14-3-1, 12-1-1) rolled Chartiers Valley (6-8, 6-6) in Section 2-3A. Zach Shutak recorded his ninth shutout for the Tigers, who claimed a section title with the victory. Chartiers Valley will try again to clinch a playoff spot in a home match with West Allegheny on Tuesday.
North Allegheny 3, Norwin 1 – Nathan Katari converted a penalty kick to break a 1-1 tie in the second half and lead North Allegheny (14-1-3) to a nonsection win. Will Love and Zach Nash also scored for the Tigers. Ian Natale scored for Norwin (12-5-1).
Peters Township 7, Brashear 0 – Jeven Kelly scored two goals while Blake Gabelhart, Alex Parise, Logan Sawich, Carter Helbig and Gavin Clutter each netted a goal for Peters Township (12-3-1, 10-3-1) in a nonsection win over Brashear.
Quaker Valley 5, West Allegheny 0 – Nick Allan had two goals and an assist and Andrew Vescio, Jack Karwoski and Liam Miller added a goal apiece for Quaker Valley (14-3) in a nonsection win over West Allegheny (4-11-1).
Shaler 5, Hempfield 1 – Luca Wallander had a hat trick and John Lamanna and Dylan Paylo also scored to lead Shaler (1-14-2) past Hempfield (0-16) in a nonsection match.
Springdale 7, Greensburg Salem 0 – Billy Lawrence had six goals to lead Springdale (12-3) past Greensburg Salem (5-12) in a nonsection game.
Upper St. Clair 1, South Fayette 0 – Charlie Bacdayan scored in double overtime to lift Upper St. Clair (14-1-2) to a nonsection win over South Fayette (10-3-3).
Field hockey
Allderdice 3, Hempfield 2 – Camille Washburn, Adia Elsass and Anne McHale scored as Allderdice defeated Hempfield in Section 3A to pick up the first win in program history.
North Allegheny 3, Norwin 0 – Isla Abrams scored a pair of goals and Josie Schomburg tacked on another as North Allegheny beat Norwin in Section 3A.
Hockey
Blackhawk 8, Hampton 1 – Sam Haddox and Owen Gatowski each scored twice and Max Jansto added a goal and an assist for Blackhawk (1-0) in a Class A win. Joey Stephenson scored for Hampton (0-3).
Burrell 10, Wilmington 1 – Julian Kemp had a hat trick, Luke Min scored twice and Mike Morazcyzk collected a goal and three assists for Burrell (1-1) in a Varsity D2 win. Nathan Sabatini and John Lukac each had a goal and an assist. Sean Carmichael scored for Wilmington (0-1).
Butler 9, Greensburg Salem 2 – Jaxon Salata had a hat trick and Benjamin Mikan and Anthony Trombatt had a goal and an assist each for Butler (2-1) in a Class A win. Mikey Kingerski and Carter Cherok each scored a goal for Greensburg Salem (2-2).
Deer Lakes 8, Sewickley Academy 0 – RJ Noullet scored twice, Owen Neidig had a goal and an assist and Ryan Grunden dished out four assists for Deer Lakes (2-1) in a Varsity D2 win over Sewickley Academy (0-2).
Latrobe 5, Penn-Trafford 2 – Jacob Hannah and Jackson Hayburn each had two goals and an assist and Joey Crimboli racked up a goal and three assists for Latrobe (3-1) in a Class 2A win. Robert Thatcher scored twice for Penn-Trafford (1-1).
Plum 6, Wheeling Park 4 – Maksim Popienko recorded a hat trick and Plum (2-0) topped Wheeling Park (0-2) in Class A. Luca Lapiana added a goal and three assists for Plum. Cooper Abraham netted a pair for Wheeling Park.
Meadville 9, West Allegheny 2 – Robert Mahoney had a hat trick and two assists for Meadville (2-1) in a Class A win. Nick Haag and Branden Switalski scored for West Allegheny (0-3).
Quaker Valley 7, McDowell 0 – Sawyer Krotine, Noah Kenneweg and Jace Vasbinder each had a pair of goals and Jacob Keisel also scored for Quaker Valley (2-0-0) in a Class A win against McDowell (1-1-0).
Girls volleyball
Burgettstown 3, Bentworth 0 – Kaitlyn Nease had 13 kills and 15 digs, Anna Poirier added six kills and Layla Sherman had 20 assists to lead Burgettstown to a nonsection victory.
Ligonier Valley 3, Rockwood 0 – Abby Tutino had 11 kills and Lacy Sosko added eight kills for Ligonier Valley in a nonsection win. Saylor Clise handed out 10 assists.
Mapletown 3, McGuffey 0 – Treslee Weston had seven kills, Isabella Garnek added six kills and Alexis Perry and Devan Clark each had 13 digs for Mapletown (12-4) in a nonsection win against McGuffey (5-13). Bri Ashton had 11 digs and four aces and Bailey Rafferty had 18 assists for the Maples.
