High school roundup for Oct. 23, 2023: Hopewell boys dethrone Deer Lakes in Class 2A 1st round

Tommy Armour and Chris Colonna scored two goals each as No. 14 Hopewell pulled off a 4-0 upset of defending champion Deer Lakes (14-3), the third seed, in a WPIAL Class 2A boys soccer first-round match Monday night.

Nick Revier recorded the shutout for the Vikings (10-6), who move on to play No. 6 Shady Side Academy in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Avonworth 4, McGuffey 0 – Rowan Carmichael scored twice to lead No. 4 Avonworth (15-2-1) to a Class 2A first-round victory over No. 13 McGuffey (12-7). The Antelopes will meet No. 5 Belle Vernon in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Belle Vernon 3, East Allegheny 2 – Trevor Kovatch and Brandon Yeschecnko scored in regulation and the Leopards had a 4-3 advantage in the penalty shootout as No. 5 Belle Vernon (15-2) got past No. 12 East Allegheny (11-5-1) in a Class 2A first-round match. Kovatch, Evan Metz, goalkeeper Bryce Burkhart and Jackson Coneybeer converted their penalties for the Leopards. Nicky Balana and Hayden Simonetta scored for EA. Belle Vernon will meet No. 4 Avonworth in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Elizabeth Forward 3, Knoch 1 – Will Sinay had a goal and an assist and Dominic Cavalier and Ethan Cilders also scored for No. 10 Elizabeth Forward (11-6-1) in a Class 2A first-round win. Matthew Welsh scored for No. 7 Knoch (11-8). The Warriors advance to face No. 2 Quaker Valley in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Keystone Oaks 2, Mt. Pleasant 1 – Makram Ishaq and Ayden Worstell scored to lead No. 8 Keystone Oaks (12-5) past No. 9 Mt. Pleasant (14-5) in a Class 2A first-round win. The Golden Eagles will face No. 1 South Park in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Quaker Valley 9, Jeannette 1 – Jack Karkowski had a hat trick and Colin Benge and Nick Allan each scored twice as No. 2 Quaker Valley (15-3) handled No. 15 Jeannette (10-8-1) in a Class 2A first-round match. Kiril Grin and Matteo Castellini also scored for the Quakers, who will meet No. 10 Elizabeth Forward in the quarterfinals Thursday. Jordan Taylor, one of the WPIAL’s all-time leading scorers, had the lone goal in his final game with the Jayhawks.

Shady Side Academy 3, Beaver 0 – Jackson Suski netted a pair of goals and Amir Awais also scored as No. 6 Shady Side Academy (13-4-1) blanked No. 11 Beaver (10-7) in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. Shady Side will play No.14 Hopewell in the quarterfinals Thursday.

South Park 2, Yough 0 – Top-seeded South Park (18-0) shut out No. 16 Yough (11-8) in the Class 3A first round. The Eagles will play No. 8 Keystone Oaks on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Girls soccer

Mars 6, Laurel Highlands 0 – Rosie Pellegrino had a hat trick and Addi Girdwood collected a goal and two assists as top-seeded Mars (15-0) opened Class 3A playoff action with a win over No. 16 Laurel Highlands (8-9). Brynn Ramsey and Meredith Ashbaugh also scored and Kate McEnroe and Lily Goodworth combined on the shutout for the Fightin’ Planets, who will take on No. 9 Elizabeth Forward in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Moon 3, Connellsville 0 – Serayah Leech recorded the 50th shutout of her career and Sydney Felton and Marina Mollica each had a goal and an assist to lead third-seeded Moon (13-1-2) to a first-round win over No. 14 Connellsville (11-8) in Class 3A. Ali D’Alesio also scored for the Tigers, who will meet No. 6 Latrobe in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

South Fayette 5, Penn-Trafford 0 – Mia Deramo and Julianna Rossi each had a goal and an assist for No. 5 South Fayette (12-4-2) in a Class 3A first-round win over No. 12 Penn-Trafford (11-7). Olivia Renk, Mia Patel and Emily Sinton also scored for the Lions, who will meet No. 4 Thomas Jefferson in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Thomas Jefferson 4, Oakland Catholic 0 – Natalie Lamenza and Samantha Maglicco each scored a pair of goals for No. 3 Thomas Jefferson (17-1) in a Class 3A opening-round shutout of No. 13 Oakland Catholic (6-7-2). Annmarie Graham made five saves for the Jaguars, who will play No. 5 South Fayette in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Girls volleyball

Class 3A – Stella Stossel had 20 kills and 10 digs and Paige Fisanich recorded 12 kills and 13 digs as No. 15 Indiana (8-5) won the final two sets to beat No. 18 Plum (10-5), 3-2, in a five-set thriller in a preliminary round match. Indiana won 26-24, 21-25, 23-25, 25-12, 15-9 and will meet No. 2 North Catholic in the first round Wednesday.

Hannah Cowburn handed out 46 assists, Alexandra Ball had 32 digs and Ashlynn Branan contributed six kills and two blocks for Indiana.

In other Class 3A preliminary round matches, No. 13 Kiski Area (13-6) beat No. 20 Belle Vernon (9-10), 3-0, No. 14 Ringgold (17-3) handled No. 19 West MIfflin, 3-0, and No. 17 Laurel Highlands (9-7) got past No. 16 Blackhawk (8-8).

Alexandra Mattey led Laurel Highlands with 15 kills and 17 digs. Ayrianna Sumpter added 10 kills, Sara Reed contributed 28 assists and 15 digs and Callie Friend had eight blocks.

Class 2A – No. 18 South Park (10-9) took three of four sets from No. 15 Yough (14-9) to win a preliminary round match. South Park won 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 and will play No. 2 Beaver in the first round Wednesday.

In other Class 2A preliminary round matches, No. 12 Ellwood City (13-6) defeated No. 21 Central Valley (9-10), 3-0, No. 13 OLSH (13-4) beat No. 20 Deer Lakes (8-8), 3-1, No. 19 Fort Cherry (12-7) swept No. 12 Waynesburg (11-8), 3-0, and No. 16 Charleroi blanked No. 17 Hopewell (8-9), 3-0,

Hockey

Avonworth 5, Hampton 1 – Colin Anderson scored twice and Jack Dolan and Austin Gatti each collected a goal and two assists for Avonworth (3-0) in a Class A win. Aidan O’Dell had a goal and an assist. Preston Cochran scored for Hampton (0-4).

Carrick 8, Morgantown 6 – Tanner Heidkamp and Ivan Manculich had two goals and an assist apiece to lead Carrick (3-1) to a Varsity D2 win over Morgantown (1-1). Indy Smithline Tavares, Shane Birkenfeld, Frank Christopher and Drew Bird also scored for the Cougars.

Chartiers Valley 5, Plum 2 – Brady Nairn netted a pair of goals and Brayden Knight, Chris DeAngelis and Noah Callender each had a goal and an assist for Chartiers Valley (4-0) in a Class A win. Romeo Isold dished out three assists. Colby Bartos scored twice for Plum (2-1).

Franklin Regional 8, North Hills 2 – Max Rutkowski scored a hat trick and Brendan Yohe added a pair of goals to lead Franklin Regional (1-1-1) to a Class 2A win. Brian Compton, Carter Yohe and Derek German also scored for the Panthers. Jonathan Trosky and Blake Kunkel scored for North Hills (0-4).

Fox Chapel 9, Penn-Trafford 5 – Dom Casile had a hat trick, Grady Cullen and Liam Wiseman each buried a pair of goals and Tucker Cullen and Parker Habelman also scored for Fox Chapel (3-1) in a Class 2A win. Bryce Kropczynski recorded a hat trick while Drew Hall and Cam Kiste scored a goal apiece for Penn-Trafford (1-2).

Mars 4, North Catholic 1 – Ben Olshenske had a goal and an assist and Luke Olshenske, Nathan Bossola and Jacob Lestitian also scored for Mars (2-1) in a Class A win. Ryan Berry scored for North Catholic (2-1).

Quaker Valley 8, Kiski 1 – Jace Vasbinder scored four goals and added an assist to lead Quaker Valley (4-0) to a Class A win. Max Modrovich had two goals and two assists and Hunter Kronk and Coleman Carey also scored. Ethan Bombalski scored for Kiski (0-3).

Shaler 7, West Allegheny 2 – Joshua Yuiska scored a pair of goals while Jacob Kunc, Chase Irwin, Jacob Skerlong and Dylan Marsden each added a goal as Shaler (3-0) rolled to a Class A victory over West Allegheny (0-4). Max Smith and Branden Switalski scored for West A.

Upper St. Clair 4, Bethel Park 3 (OT) – Collin McCarthy scored the overtime winner to lift Upper St. Clair (3-1) to a Class 3A win/ Dylan Yealy had a goal and two assists and Grahm Tauch added a goal and an assist. Vincent Klingensmith scored twice and Will Alborg had a goal and an assist for Bethel Park (3-1-1).

Wheeling Catholic 4, Moon 3 – Gary Hatfield, Logan Pielech, Bode Burge and Aden Cooey scored for Wheeling Catholic (1-0) in a Class A win. Eric Hartman, Josh Hatton and Clayton Foster scored for Moon (2-1).

Wilmington 4, Sewickley Academy 1 – Mitchell Covert had a goal and two assists, Noah Monstwil added a goal and an assist, and Tye Tomak and Noah King also scored for Wilmington (1-2) in a Varsity D2 win. Arjun Kathju scored for Sewickley Academy (0-3).
